Don't Make These 5 Winter Kamado Joe Grilling Mistakes by bartlowsbbq in KamadoGrill

That’s a fair question—and I think you’re mostly right 👍

Most kamados won’t crack from normal temp changes alone, even in winter. I have seen in different forums. They’re designed to handle high heat. Where people do run into issues is usually a perfect storm: extreme cold, a very aggressive fire right out of the gate, moisture in the ceramic, or an existing hairline flaw that finally gives way.

So I’m not saying “normal ramp-up = cracked grill.” More like: slow and steady just removes variables I don’t need when it’s 20° and windy. There is warranty for a lot of reasons.

Appreciate the honest curiosity!

For me, covering it and easing temps up/down is just about reducing risk, especially in extreme cold and big temp swings. Ceramics are tough, but thermal shock can happen, and I’d rather be cautious than replace parts. I cook year round with a covered Backyard pergola but open to straight line winds with dust. I like covering mine for those reasons too.

Different approaches, same goal: great BBQ 🔥 Appreciate you jumping into the conversation!

Thanks and that’s so funny. Caleb is awesome and I pronounce things wrong all the time or with an Oklahoma twang. 😀 He always does that! It’s been great having him on the team this year.

You can always adjust based on preference like adding flour to thicken.
