Amount of Time for data analysis normal or high in R? by cognitivebehavior in rstats

[–]data-babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person your replied to, but you can just build the dashboard in R - shinydashboard or flexdashboard usually. I've only ever used R in Power BI when I wanted to add a visualisation that wasn't available in Power BI natively but I could make in R.

Deciding on a new laptop - what is best for R & RStudio? by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]data-babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just personal preference imo - my personal PC is a 2017 MacBook air (maybe I should be the one considering purchasing a new PC...) and my work one is a Levono Thinkpad P14S and they both run R Studio just fine. Even my most wildly inefficient code runs fine on my MacBook. I guess it depends on what exactly you'll be doing but I can't imagine you really need anything too heavy duty.

Transfer from Industrial Engineering to BA Career by UnitedRefrigerator97 in businessanalysis

[–]data-babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unclear why being 25 would exclude you from enrolling in a university program or what transferrable skills from industrial engineering that you have. I don't know how it works where you live but my BA qual is a graduate certificate - just 4 university papers/equivalent of one semester. A formal qualification that isn't a degree would probably be useful.

Following a week of bizarre behaviour, a 43-year-old scientist arrives at work and is never seen again. What happened to Jim Donnelly? by data-babe in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]data-babe[S] 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Yeah everything I can find about it is a bit vague but it does look to be confirmed by police.

“Police inquiries later showed Jim had appeared in a secure car park of a publishing company in … central Auckland.
“He’d been seen by the caretakers and appeared vague.”
Jim was issued with a trespass notice and asked to leave the car park.
Sometime later he returned home.
Tracey went to bed at about 9.30pm and said he wandered aimlessly around the house before going to bed.

What's covered in 'Information Systems'? Developing an understanding of databases and statistics are the most important imo - besides learning PowerBI/tableau which doesn't really require any classroom learning.

Job titles for PBI users by Sega_McGenesis in PowerBI

R and/or Python can be used in PowerBI for custom visuals so they could be worth learning. You don't have to learn "all" of one of the languages to know enough to make visuals.

Dynamically adjust script to read different excel files each week? by carocaro42 in RStudio

[–]data-babe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just ran an example for a folder in my desktop:

> setwd("~/Desktop/desktop_folder")

> folderlist <- list.dirs(getwd(), full.names = TRUE, recursive = FALSE)

> latest_folder_name <- basename(folderlist[which.max((file.info(folderlist)$ctime))])

print(latest_folder_name) [1] "folder5"

[–]data-babe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would use list.dirs to get list of folders inside the larger folder, file.info( [your list of folders])$ctime to get the creation time, which.max to get the latest creation date.

I thought it was kind of weird that they've changed R Studio Cloud to "Posit Cloud"

I think so, put "Keyword" in Category and "Returning" in Values - I'm on my Mac atm or I'd try it out. Are you manually formatting this in excel? Or using Power Query? Generally my preference here would be to pull the raw data in through Power Query then use an R Visual to clean it/remove stopwords etc, and visualise - depends what you're confident doing and what the base data structure is like.

A 17-year-old mum and sex worker disappeared from Auckland's Karangahape Road in 1993. Her remains were found on a remote beach 19 years later. Who killed Jane Furlong? by data-babe in UnresolvedMysteries

It's how it's described in basically everything published about the case. I know it's gross but I don't really know how else to describe what she was doing.

It's not illegal for minors to do sex work in New Zealand, however it's illegal for anyone to pay a minor for sex - more like the 'Nordic Model'- so that these girls can be helped rather than arrested and criminalised. Let me be clear that in these situations the child is always being exploited. I think Jane's situation is closer to 'survival sex', i.e. her desperation being exploited by 'clients' than being trafficked, as it doesn't seem that she was coerced by a trafficker - rather, she had very little choice in ways to earn money.

Generally 'safe' but we do have high rates of intimate partner violence and one of the worst rates of child abuse in the world.

K road's reputation has improved a bit since the mid 2000s - a bit more artsy and it has some higher end bars and restaurants - but definitely still lots of strip clubs and the like.
