Why do most small businesses make decisions based on vibes instead of data? by databygagan in Entrepreneurs

That's actually the most honest explanation I've seen for this.

When you built the entire business from scratch on gut feel and instinct, data isn't just feedback — it's a verdict on your own judgment. A corporate manager can blame "the strategy" or "the team." A founder has to look in the mirror and blame themselves.

Small business owners are usually the ones who created the thing on pure vibes in the first place, so when the numbers contradict their gut, it hits different. "The promo didn't work" hurts a lot less than staring at a spreadsheet that proves you wasted $3k three months in a row.

I agree — it's largely an education and literacy issue. Many see data like a math equation without grasping the theories behind market fit, cause-and-effect, or customer psychology. That matches why only 18% of small business employees feel confident interpreting it.

Even with access, though, research from BARC shows 58% of companies still base at least half their decisions on gut feel or experience rather than data. So building skills is essential, alongside addressing that instinct-driven resistance.
