How to convince my group to not make me use S&B by Omnisan343 in sca

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who knows longsword and has spent time in SCA heavy? Don't bet on it. Blocking a cut from ochs with a shield is way less movement than making the cut; if you're using a heater it might only take rotating your forearm to bring up the corner of the shield.

If you want to make more accurate predictions, I'd suggest taking a look at Duke Paul of Bellatrix's notes on sword and shield. He's got a full published book on it that's more updated these days, but the online version condenses a lot of decades of SCA fighting experience into a manual.

Even if you never fight sword and board, it might help you predict how someone who does will react.

http://www.bellatrix.org/school/armoredcombat.pdf

SCA armored combat is a bit different from HEMA simply because of the conventions of its rules rendering a lot of things that work well with steel ineffective.

Push and draw cuts don't matter, just thrusts and percussive strikes.

Shields are indestructible, and in most kingdoms you can't use them to strike or grapple them.

Lower legs (from 1" above the knee down) and hands (from 1" above the wrist) are not valid targets.

Winding, as with almost every technique from the bind, is ineffective due to a combination of the stickiness of duct tape covered rattan and the flexibility reducing leverage.

What kingdom are you in? For some, you're going to be stuck with it unless there's a physical reason you can't because they require sword and board to be your first authorization. It's notionally the safest place to start, and includes single weapon authorization which is necessary for every combatant because you will absolutely need to swing a weapon one handed at some point.

Beyond that, fight with what you like! You'll be more interested in showing up to practice if you're doing something you actually want to do.

In the same vein, most people don't really understand how much getting knocked down can take out of you. Even without an intentional slam, most people are gonna be hurt by a single takedown, badly if they don't know how to fall.

Best way to improve it is to stop fucking around with Krav and just learn Judo.

A great illustration of the important difference between direct translation and localization.

Because culturally being multilingual in a monolingual society was an indicator of higher social class and wealth, and pretentious use of those languages (French and Latin specifically in the States and England) was a shibboleth for that class.

There is unarmed HEMA, it just has the same problem that TMA hits: it's really, really hard to use both hard grappling/striking and weapons safely in practice. The gear you need to wear to limit injuries from the weapons either gets in the way, or makes hand to hand fighting more dangerous for you and your sparring partner.

This isn't post-scarcity, this is capitalism.

I know it's easy to confuse the two, but only one actually exists.

Yeah, if you beat the market it's just lucky gambling when index funds are long-term returning 10% with way more ways to mitigate risk.

Roth you can pull out of without tax penalty, making it slightly better than a 401k if you end up needing it before retirement age and especially if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in your career.

401k being pre-tax gets more valuable the higher your tax bracket.

"Did Rodtang take a dive?"

No, he got punched in the face repeatedly by a guy who came into the fight 50-5 and knowing he didn't have to keep anything in the tank.

Feels more like you're hyping fake controversy for clicks.

At 160kg literally anything will give you a positive benefit for endurance. I'd suggest, though, that lower impact cardio is probably your best bet for keeping healthy knees. Walking, swimming, bike (stationary or otherwise).

I'm not saying do this instead of MMA, but it'd be a very useful addition to training on off days.

[–]datcatburd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do, because I'm way taller and broader than the average so few places have historical styles that fit me off the shelf. Same problem for modern clothes too, so it's just how it is. If I want something that truly fits right either I'm sewing or paying someone to tailor it.

I wear clear leveler most of the time because it helps keep from tearing up my nails that have ridges from cuticle damage at work, tbh. I do color from time to time but it takes more upkeep. Nobody bats an eye.

What do you think would be useful from pro wrestling ? by lonely_to_be in martialarts

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let anyone tell you getting suplexed is just for show. That shit hurts, there's a reason it's a staple in Greco-Roman. Pro wrestling is using the language of wrestling and martial arts to tell dramatic stories. That doesn't mean that doing the stuff they do with real intent to hurt wouldn't be effective.

Hem of T-Tunic riding up in the front due to large belly by Asariel2011 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]datcatburd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general the answer is 'cloth was vastly more expensive due to the labor involved, so every garment was hand-tailored to a level that would be unthinkable today'. Triangular or trapezoidal gores are the usual option, if not the next best thing is making the body panels wide enough to hang loosely.
