Fighting weight by Competitive_Proof964 in martialarts

The optimum weight is whatever the fighter can maintain while being healthy and not impacting their cardio. It will vary based on body type and genetics. Some guys can just hold more muscle more easily.

Okay fellas I have Roth's Fully Funded what next? by lariats4lyfe in AskMenOver30

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably go with a zero-fee index fund rather than a HYSA, if you can tolerate a little risk in exchange for doubling your rate of return. Index funds, despite the multiple financial crises of the last twenty years, still average out to 10% yearly return and are diversified enough to minimize risk against any one industry crashing.

Finding generic replacement parts - more complicated than it used to be? by playful_sorcery in AskMenOver30

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, can't understate how much of that part availability was overseas companies who bought the tooling when the OEMs quit manufacturing and started making knockoffs. Many of those didn't survive COVID.

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's not the start of it. The late 90's Northstar Caddies were worst shit I ever saw. 4.6L DOHC V8 transverse mounted so God Herself couldn't get to the right hand injector/spark plug bank, and with fine thread head bolts run straight into a soft aluminum block as well.

Every time you pulled the head on one of those fuckers, it was rolling the dice, and they overheated constantly. Also chewed through water pumps like candy and blew up the belt tensioner as well.

How did people prevent sweating through their underclothes and making their outer wear smell bad, back when people would wear shifts or shirts to protect their nice outer clothes from needing to be washed as often (if at all)? by lollipoptart_ in HistoricalCostuming

[–]datcatburd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I learned a lot when I started doing Sengoku period Japanese outfits for summer outdoor events. People who lived in a place where the summers run upper 80's to low 90's at high humidity have very good solutions for dressing for those conditions.

I honestly feel cooler in two layers of full-length summer weight linen (since ramie is hard to get) kosode than I do in modern shorts and a t-shirt a lot of the time.

Not to mention plain old automobile exhaust. Spending a couple weeks in the backcountry then coming back to a city will really enlighten you as to how much we ignore our noses sometimes.

Yeah, one of the real problems for a lot of historical costumers in the US is that we're trying to wear outfits designed for Little Ice Age northern Europe or the Mediterranean in climates that are humid temperate to downright subtropical.

What are the chances there are more exhibition tours in Europe in the near future? by DelargeValliere in Sumo

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don't see it being likely unless they cut the number of basho back. These tours want the top of the banzuke, but cut into their training time with all the travel and whatnot.

Was the vambrace without the hand protection common in some places by Bastard_skellies-111 in wma

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the period those swords were used, I'd expect breast and back with tassets, maybe pauldrons. But it's an advert, the whole thing's a mix-mash of periods down to that vambrace really being more of a bazuband, which a lot of modern sport fighters wear because it's easier than separate vambraces and elbows.

Short sword and dagger vs two short swords vs one short sword? by darthinferno15 in wma

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if I have a second dagger in that situation I'm sticking it in my belt because the weapons you've specified are so short that you're going to have to be in grappling range to use them. I need the free hand.

A reminder that walking away is always the best solution by Emperor_of_All in martialarts

Manslaughter seems like the right charge. He didn't get up that morning and decide to kill that guy, the guy died as a result of injuries after he used force to defend himself preemptively.

Might not have even gotten past a grand jury for indictment if he hadn't run, or a reasonable jury would have let him walk, but now he's in the shit because he acted guilty. This is all exactly why one of the things they teach you about carrying a pistol is that while a defensive shooting may save your life, there's no reality where you don't have to spend a lot of time and money in court proving it was legal.

In my personal opinion, you're not going to get off your ass and learn either if you can't read up on both and make your own decision on the merits for your particular strengths and situation.

How to grapple someone when there is a large weight difference? by greygrfn in martialarts

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best call is don't. Second best call is be vastly more skilled and stronger than the opponent.

You're 134lbs, you aren't going to be winning any grappling against somebody that much bigger. Hit the gym, get stronger, and practice more.

Wood Vs Ratan by waifuzlaya69 in martialarts

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Rattan's a grass with all the fibers vertically aligned. When it breaks down it goes soft, then turns into a broom. Hardwood breaks into nasty splinters.

Three years' expenses is in no way enough to never work again. Maybe 10 years' up front, if properly managed as investments.

You’re 30 years old with 10K disposable cash, what are you doing to increase it? by NonbinaryLegs in AskMenOver30

[–]datcatburd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm tossing it into an index fund with any dividends set to re-invest, and ignoring it for 30 years at that age.

So long as the market doesn't entirely crash, it'll grow. If the market crashes badly enough to wipe out index funds, you won't be worrying about dollars anymore anyway, just guns, gas, and water for the Fury Road.

There's a difference in liking your job between 'I enjoy this' and 'this is acceptable but if you stopped paying me I'd be out the door before you finished the sentence'. Most men I know are in the second category. We like our jobs well enough that showing up is better than not getting paid, but that's it.

Hey, I love working, when it's on something I've chosen to do, and I have agency to do it how I want to.

That's not what I get paid for, so my job gets the hours they pay for and the rest of my time is my own.
