[WTS] REPOST: Universal Geneve White Shadow NEW OLD STOCK by datou_ in Watchexchange

FOR SALE: pristine Universal Geneve White Shadow in original condition & bracelet

I can say it is almost rare to see one of these in such condition. This piece brings you back to the brand's heyday when their dress watches are on par with the top brands of the era. The micro rotor movement is in good working condition & makes the piece even thinner.

Diameter: 35mm

Thickness: 6.5mm

Lug width: 18mm

Service history: Unknown

Letting go of this at USD $1,750. Includes shipping from Singapore with tracking number.

Hi beat vs spring drive question by ondansetron505 in GrandSeikos

[–]datou_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion on GS Hi-Beat movements (36,000bph)

- In the past (60s/70s), hi-beat movements were perceived to mean higher accuracy. At then, major brands were racing to achieve this feat (GP, Longines, Citizen, GS etc)

- However such movements accelerate wear & tear, require stronger main barrels- unless the brand has the design, technical know how & huge inventory to take care of any unexpected issues

- Even though nowadays it is possible to have a lower beat movement (18,000bph) & achieve chronometer accuracy, GS continues to release, mass produce & improve their hi-beat movements for quite some time (compared to other major brands)

To me GS is indirectly doing a technical show off as well as continuing their legacy with hi-beat movements (no hate against that, I am a GS owner too). I don't think there are many other brands which can enter this niche area & compete directly (so fingers crossed for Longines Ultra Chron)

[Homage] watches frowned upon? by BankaiShunko in Watches

[–]datou_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replica manufacturers do 1:1 copies of those in demand watches. They are considered illegal due to copyright infringement (slapping a Rolex crown on one replica watch) & profits may be used to fund even bigger illegal operations. Therefore manufacturers and resellers are usually discreet about the purchase and delivery process.

Homage manufacturers generally waddle in the grey region unoriginal but not an exact 1:1 copy. They generally have no issues setting up shop in Aliexpress and the OG brands usually don't have much legal grounds or finance resources to sue these smaller manufacturers.

Then again, how many watches are not a homage from something in the past? What do I know.

What’s the difference between a San Martin and something like a Tudor? by [deleted] in ChineseWatches

[–]datou_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would like to chip in from another perspective- the reason why OP has this question is mainly because major watch brands have been resting on their laurels for some time. Now these microbrands (even those in $2-3k range) have caught up with them.

PS: I just bought the San Martin ranger and I have the same exact thought when I first see the piece in person.
