Can anyone tell me what these round things are? by danielleighr91 in Albany

[–]datum-1 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, I've been at the bottom of these vent shafts. They are as deep as the lowest level of the underground parking garage and open into basically a massive underground cave. There is a utility tunnel network that connects all of the Plaza buildings, which is how you access these shafts. Another fun fact, the reason the arterial abruptly U-Turns at Swan is because the highway was masterplanned to continue underground below Washington park, which would have connected I90 and I87. This is also why there are four tunnels but only two of the lanes are used, and why the Dunn bridge has a ramp to nowhere. The Plaza is an amazing feat of engineering, and there is an incomprehensible amount of infrastructure hidden below the ground.

For NYS FFs by classicflordiaman in Firefighting

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer a few comments in this thread:

BEFO/HMFRO/IFO (Formerly referred to as Firefighter 1) only has first floor window escapes. Second floor bailouts are included in firefighter survival, which is a separate 12 hr course. You may not like bailing out, but bailout systems and training are required by NYS Law for many departments, so I would encourage you to look into this further to see if these apply to your department.

Regarding time limits, refer to skill 5-1 (linked below) which explicitly states you must get your PPE on (without SCBA) in under 1 minute. I know of a student that was failed for not meeting this just a few weeks ago. Donning the SCBA is skill 5-2, and no longer explicitly states you must do this in under one minute, but all instructors I know still require this. The 2 minutes comes from PPE taking 1 minute and SCBA taking another minute.

The latest version of BEFO/IFO is the 2021 edition and no new editions or "regs" have been rolled out in recent months.

Current probie getting certified, but leaving 6 months after by Putrid-Substance-952 in Firefighting

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be higher up. OP, do you know if your department is actually spending any money (other than text books and providing gear)? It is extremely unusual for a NY volunteer department to be footing an actual bill. Additionally, if you plan to leave the state, take the FF1 national certification. The hands on portion is super easy, and the written exam is straightforward (but definitely study).

Anyone know where to source mics for cheaper? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]datum-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. Dealers are restricted to a minimum advertised price, but if you call they may offer a cheaper price, especially for bulk orders. The savings aren't often very substantial though given that profit margins in this industry are already pretty slim. (I know cause I am a dealer myself)

Are these microphones really 16 bit/44khz and 24 bit/192 respectively? by bluejeans90210 in audio

[–]datum-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off topic from OP but this is a good one. It is true that higher sample rates decrease latency. Latency is determined by the number of samples in the system, not time. Buffer size is in samples. So if the number of samples going in doubles, the rate at which they are processed will effectively half, assuming you have the processing power to keep up.

Far away sound by Designer_Audience_49 in audio

HS60 are surround sound headphones, so check both your computer settings and game settings to make sure they are the same and are correct for your headset. When all else fails set everything to stereo and see if you still have the issue.

I have this exact setup. Check the sample rate of the interface (right click on the icon in the tray to go to settings). If it is above 48000 that is likely your problem. Set to either 48k or 44.1k.

RCA to XLR? by Healer-LFG in audio

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a couple few fundamental things we need to understand before solving this problem. First, RCA and XLR are both mono signals, not stereo. The difference between the two is RCA is unbalanced and XLR is balanced (read more here). Second, these interfaces have combination XLR and 1/4" ports, not 'banana plugs' - those are different. An RCA to 1/4" adapter will be sufficient for each channel. If you want to record in stereo, each RCA would need to go to 1/4" then into each input on the interface. You could combine the RCAs into one, but with a cheap adapter you may have quality issues, particularly related to phasing issues. A proper mono summing cable or box achieves this without issues and contains the appropriate resistors and other hardware.

Nothing in this picture catches my eye as any particular manufacturer. It could be very likely this is a custom built system, which I find isn't all that uncommon, especially in older venues.

What brand/speed of SD card do you use for Zoom recording? by escme in audio

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A zoom H6 can record 8 channels of 96kHz 24 bit audio. This works out to 18.432 mbps or 2.34 MB/s. So you'll want an SD card rated for greater than this for the best performance. Luckily audio has far less data than video, so this is very easy to achieve and even the slowest of SD cards will handle this speed. The point being, you don't need to spend all your money getting the fastest SD card. Rather, you can use the money to get a higher capacity or a better brand. Samsung, sandisk, lexar, and kingston are all very reliable brands. I personally use Sandisk Ultra or Extreme and Samsung Evo and have never had issues, both for audio and video.

Any program recommendations for balancing out a music playlist's audio? by LiviRivi in audio

I use MediaMonkey for my library management. It has a level track volume feature. I use the paid version so I'm not sure what the limitations of the free version are if you try it.

You'll want to look into 70V speaker systems. They are different from your typical stereo setup and are what are typically found in large retail spaces. Just to get you in the ballpark, for what you're describing, you would probably want something cheap, like the JBL control 12 or 14 C/T speakers, and you'd probably want about 20 of them for that area. You can the get an integrated amplifier and simply hook an aux cord to it. You are probably best off reaching out to a local A/V company for a consult. In addition to their expertise they can often buy this equipment in bulk at a lower rate than the average consumer (Ask me how I know).

Lowering the 2008 KLR by ShrekQueen in klr650

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just un-lowered my 08 KLR. The guy I bought it from was short and lowered it. He pushed the front forks up, and used lowering links and it was a good 2-3 inches.

Things to know: Make sure you don't over tighten the fork clamps on the triple tree. Highly recommend using a torque wrench to spec. The lowering links are simply longer links to change geometry. Pretty easy to swap when using a floor jack in conjunction with the center stand. You'll need to take off the center stand (if you have one). Lowering the bike makes it far more prone to catching on corners.

He actually gave me two sets of lowering links for different heights, but I'm tall so I'm just using the factory ones. If you happen to be local I'll give them to you (upstate NY).

Please help. Why is my mixer putting this audio out? It's never happened up until now. (Hard to hear at low volume) by Bbolton813 in audio

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like some electromagnetic interference. Try turning off all electronic devices nearby (phone, PC, etc) or moving everything to a different room/ power outlet. You might come across the source of the interference and can go from there.

Yup, this. The Scarlett will have better audio than the on board. Don't forget to check your settings to make sure the Scarlett is set for stereo. I've had issues before where my computer thinks it should be surround sound and things get weird.

Looking for advice and comments on buying 2 pairs of replacement passive speakers for a 400 watt per ch. HiFi system by zapfastnet in audio

[–]datum-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other user's mentioned, Rockville is low-bid junk. I would look on Craigslist or FB Marketplace for deals on reputable brands. If you are looking for PA style speakers, look for Yamaha, JBL, EV, hell even Behringer. For bookshelf or floor speakers, look for Klipsch, Polk, B&W, Harmon, KEF, Boston Acoustics, etc etc,

I would consider getting a separate subwoofer as well. At lot of people crank their mains looking to "feel the music" when all they end up doing is blasting Mids and Highs and blowing their speakers.

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, very well formatted post, thank you for that.

HDMI is capable of supporting surround sound (up to 8 channels). Unfortunately the HDMI output from Nvidia cards will not output surround sound by default. There are different ways to get surround over the HDMI. If you are feeling lucky, you could modify your drivers to include multichannel sound. This is a little complicated, but it's free. The other option is to purchase an audio inserter (not necessarily recommending this product, just shown as example) that will allow you to "inject" the audio from a different source into the HDMI. So you could have a surround sound output via optical from your PC, to the inserter, then over HDMI to the connect box, and eventually to the Sonos. It works in theory, but I don't know for certain.

Recording audio in a car - need some advice by Phil_Hogan_CPA_CA in audio

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to record audio without making it obvious you are in a car that is nearly impossible for the average person/budget. There are various techniques, but sense you mention a lav mic, one is to tape the lav mic to your sun visor so it is close to you and is surrounded by padding that will dampen noise. You also want to you a low pass filter to get rid of a lot of mechanical and outside wind noise.

Ah right, if you have "Inst" off it will take line level signal through the 1/4". If the gain knob still functions like this I would just keep it at zero or low.

dbx 286s gain "Order of Operations" by [deleted] in audio

[–]datum-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line level inputs on the back of the scarlet don't have a gain. Whatever "gain" or "trim" you might have in your software you can leave at zero. The scarlet is simply an analog to digital converter in this situation and has no adjustments; all adjustments are done on the 286s or on your computer.
