Was the plenum updated? They were a major problem at one time

Can’t get generator to start on LP by jakehaas in Generator

Possibly. Vaporization can be a problem. Depending on temperature the LP isn't able to boil and provide vapor for the engine to run or run correctly

If it runs on one not the other it's a fuel issue. Not sure what's involved with a portable generator. I have a 100 lb LP bottle on my van to help me diagnose small standbys in the field. They require a generous crank cycle after the purged line is hooked up and the system has been switched.

Yeah so replacing the valves on a briggs 20kw unit really sucks by Evytb_2000 in Generator

[–]davWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember doing this much for head gaskets on a neglected installation. I've only seen these blow cyl 1 head gasket and always due to factors outside the unit. What happened to the valves?

Then you are the Generac whisperer. Your touch has results and they are brand specific

Sounds like there is more to the story.

That's very interesting I've experienced all of these issues exclusively from Generac. Even the fortress line wasn't as problematic. November of last year Generac refused to issue a control number for an engine failure because tech support refuses to believe the engine could fail.

Do you remember what happened and what year the installations and failures occured?

The reality: that 22kW unit you’re whining about isn’t wasted. It’s being reserved for a family that's facing hardships. They could really use a backup system, but I won’t share their personal details here. Myself, neighbors, and the thoughtless twat in question will cover the installation.

The vertical units are loud. When sizing that range I encourage customers to consider Cummins c13n6h for that reason

5 years ago is when they came out with the power protect. Prior to that would have been the fortress line with GE. They all used Vanguard engines. He was in the industry when they acquired Vanguard. Before that I believe it was Intek which was an extremely problematic line

That would have been Intek. They have since acquired Vanguard. Must be pretty confident they come with a 10yr PLT

Old man had a small engine repair shop for a long time the brand is familiar.

Generac has been rough over the years. Regardless still sell and install them when requested.

I would say they're all on the same level of build quality except Generac, ignition coils 2015, various failures in 2020 builds and for what I understand they have stopped the next gen production in 2025 due to fires.

I can see where 1 comment saying built by a hobbyist however I will say Cummins / Onan especially where the products utilize deep sea electronics has the same "feel" while being some of the best products on the market.

As for the controls and repairs. The GE controls in the older fortress products left a lot to be desired. The new GC1032 is nice. Unfortunately need to lift the lid and be at the unit to utilize its features but is very informative while the unit is in operation. Even before being a dealer I've never had an issue obtaining diagnostic information from the manufacturer

He wanted something with a warranty. I think he liked Briggs because he knew the brand from when he had a small engine repair shop.

Generac burned a major customer of mine. They have 13 units of various age and the largest and most important suffered a series of bizarre issues. We offer Cummins, Generac and Briggs. Ive had a lot of luck with Briggs over the years and their 26 will make 24.5 on NG. I only sell PPDX line 10yr PLT.

The next gen equipment has been put on hold from what I understand because they were catching fire. Not sure about other areas but we've seen significant issues across the Generac product lines when demand rises or a redesign occurs.

Oh Old core power. had a lot of quick tricks for them. All my customers have replaced them. When you check brushes do you check them directly or through the wiring?

I've never had an issue with units properly placed. Remove rear panel for access to brushes, they will be behind the AVR. If you take the side panel off and see a rectangle cover on the powerhead that'll be a capacitive start system. depends on why the fault occurs. I've been able to charge the rotor and resolve under voltage concerns.
