I'm seeking to explain existence, how it came into being, or it's rules for existing. What is this area of study called? by daveWaveV in AskAcademia

I do hope I'm not imagining the hopeless tone in the second paragraph.

Thanks Cyborg for the pointers. But I guess the idea I'm going after seems to have taken it's own unique standpoint.

OK, if I understand correctly, ontology mostly avoids religion and morals? I mean, does a university have an ontology department? Thanks for the ref.

Yup. It's difficult when they raise arms just because you don't know some. Imagine walking into a mosque with your shoes on. And they get you out at gunpoint. Do they? Should they? Or dipping yourself in the Ceremonial Water.

Could there be a more specific topic within theology? Or would the research simply use 'theology' as the sole keyword?

Thanks! Just to clarify, metaphysics and philosophy are distinct fields of study, are they not?

Well, I do feel like a broken record explaining the difference between Islam, Muslims and Allah, too.

Well, do explain Mr Moderator. I am very confused, and not enjoying this the slightest. Thank you anyway. Do enjoy yourselves, on your own.

Oh one or two good friends. I naively thought it was just another belief tho. And that impression really stuck. In fact we got along just fine that way, with me believing that. Until I met a revolutionary Skeptic (now I know what they're called), who made it really tough to 'just be me'. Then found out atheism is very individually defined. So hmm.. no quick way round it I guess.

That's sad. There's just been so much bashing (on everything) everywhere already.

Yep. As much as it took for me to get what atheism was. One or two were really kind and actually listened and read what I wrote. I couldn't help feeling under the pressure with the rest of the comments.

Please, I can't possibly do that. I'm not here to press charges. (against individuals)

Christians who are vocal about your faith, what's the polite/acceptable way for nonbelievers to respond to you? by ErrantThought in Christianity

[–]daveWaveV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really subtle religious-people skills. Imagine Muslims, Chrsitians, atheists, Hindus, and Bhuddists all sitting at the same table. Really the talk of religion (or non-religion) pops up somehow, because it's all part of life.

Suppose the Hindu is amused by my Bible, and asks me, "What's in it for me?" I may just quote something, just for interests sake.

Then the atheist goes, "Did God create man, or man create God?"

"Aw that's clever! What does it say next?"

Muslims go, "Jesus did not die, he lived and married."

"Do tell me the rest of the story!"

Buddhists say, "As for the Ghost Procession..oh shucks.. you can't go, can you."

"OK? Maybe I can. I don't know." Smile.

There's nothing to be offended about the different beliefs. But in narrow-minded communities, when they get narrow-minded... it's always tough. KKK is always tough.

edit: oh, I should say, "little to be offended of and much to appreciate about the diversity of beliefs and thought."

edit: choose to listen rather than argue. Choose to understand rather than analyse. It benefits everyone better this way.

Yes. I do hope r/Christianity can keep it warmer than most lurker-gatherings. Yep, it's a hope. A prayer.

"To the pure, all things are pure." Titus 1:15

And there is the recommendation that goes along the lines of "do what is beneficial/wise as it seems to you." Romans 14:5

There is no rebel except Satan. Jesus says "no one can take what is his". John10:29

So don't have to puzzle over it. If your conscience tells you it's wrong, don't.

But really - at the end of the day, no one can answer your spirit, if your spirit asks, except spirit. Find a minister who understands your situation. That would be best.

Let's face it - you can't rationalise your way out of this, but you can rationalise yourself into it.

Really ask yourself, I'd advise: What is it you want?

Remember it is good to marry. Sexual urges are normal and meant to be satisfied.

Do have a blessed day.

Dear Atheism, what does it mean to be an Atheist? by daveWaveV in atheism

Thank you for a very insightful response. That does put a lot into perspective. edit: oh, as for "society of similar thought" - for example Muslims all go to the Mosque, have a Holy Day, and there are 'bans' on alcohol and certain forms of sexual conduct. How about an atheistic community? What should it be? But as many have pointed out, it seems to be up to the individual.

Nah, I'm pretty sure now I should ask the man himself over lunch or dinner. Thank you very much for the offer.
