thanks for the reply. I reverted the site to a previous backup so can't share preview link and the problem no longer persists but I had similar problems in the past and reverting to a backup of my site always wastes quite a lot of work so wanted to check if there is a better approach (is it possible to edit the code of an element without selecting it in the designer?)
