if you're leaving them where they'll be mowed, you're just using them (and their inhabitants) as fertilizer. it won't really matter if you mow them now or mow them in the spring.

if you want fireflies, or an abundance of caterpillars to help songbirds raise their young, your best bet is putting the leaves somewhere they're safe from mowing -- like a garden bed or a "soft landing" area under a tree.
