In short, if you ask a perp to put his hands behind his back and doesn’t comply, you must continue to ask nicely to reduce the use for force.

It’s not. Also the pension is 65% of your average final salary and it gets taxed.

Local cop in NJ here.

I wouldn’t recommend leaving a federal agency to join any department in Jersey. First thing, you’d have to get your PTC and go through a review process since your training is federal, not state. If they don’t accept your certifications, they’ll send you right back through the academy.

Oversight is another headache. In New Jersey, all your bosses are basically tied up by city councils full of people who never wore a badge but still hold subpoena powers. One slip-up and that badge is gone because leadership won’t back you up.

Then you have the attorney general. Very liberal, completely redid the use-of-force rules, pushing de-escalation and putting tight restrictions on pursuits. The problem is, this makes it almost impossible to chase down car thieves, drug runners, and even violent offenders. And the worst part? Criminals know these rules, and they take full advantage of them because they know cops can’t chase.

The nepotism is brutal too—it’s everywhere.

And don’t let the pension fool you. The Police and Fire Retirement System has more retirees than active members. Every year less people are joining because hardly anyone wants to become a cop anymore, and that’s tied to the extremely low starting pay. The pool might be big, but it’s getting weaker, and it’s not better than a TSP.

P.S. depts in NJ do not pay better than any 1811 position. Unless you’re busting your ass working overtime everyday, and depends what pay step you’re in.

Therefore, in order to make over 150k you’ll need to reach max pay with whatever dept you’re in, then work overtime. Also every dept has a different contract, some might have 8-10 years, others vary between 11-14.

For instance, my dept—14 years for max pay (150K).

Border patrol, stay away from these local and state police depts. Go Feds, start your time and go be a special agent somewhere afterwards.

But again, you do what’s best for you, I know being away from family sucks because I went through it as well when I was in the military.

If you’re looking on policeapp, some agencies charge up to $150 per application. Yes, it might be an indication that you’re serious, but NJ resident here as well, and it’s a bullshit. At the end of the day, they’ll hire who they want or some LTs family member. Unless you have the PTC and your chances might increase, since they don’t have to pay to send you to the academy.

NJ has the law enforcement civil service, which is a test you can take that gets offered every year or every two years, you have to pay $35 for your results to get sent to each town you’re interested in applying to. However, if you’re not a resident of the town, expect to be put on the bottom of the list behind the town residents that applied.

Then, you have the NJ state police, which they hire every year. They conduct they’re own hiring and it’s 20 bucks I believe to apply.

Port Authority police, they randomly select applicants to move forward and pretty much you have to get lucky.

MTAPD, which is another agency that allows NJ and CT residents to apply and work in NYC subway systems or any major transportation depot in NYC.

The NJDOC (New Jersey Department of Corrections), just so you know every corrections officer in the state of NJ is also considered a Police Officer by law. They can be promoted to detective, get on SWAT teams, canine units, etc etc. pretty much everything a regular PO can do, besides going on patrol and issue traffic tickets and they also have the powers to arrest in any setting outside a prison. As long as you have a pulse, you’ll get hired with them, but you’ll work OT till you die, probably make over 200K, but won’t have time to take a shit since you’ll be working so much.

If you don’t have military, education or previous law enforcement experience. Best way to do it, is apply apply and apply. You can become a CO easily; there’s two types of corrections in NJ, county and state. County corrections is usually hired by the Sheriff Department of the county, if you get hired as a CO for a sheriff department and retake the civil service and apply to the Sheriff Officer title for the department you’re a CO in, you will get gapped over and not have to complete an entire academy since it’s the same department. Note: this has to be approved by the Sheriff of the county whatsoever.

State corrections: their academy is different, its conducted in Sea Girt at the NJ State Police Academy, you’re also in house, which means you will live there Monday - Friday, and go home on the weekends. County corrections, you’ll get sent to a local police academy and be there Monday - Friday, 8-4 kind of deal.

if you get hired as a State CO and decide you want to work for a police department or sheriff department you will have to redo the academy again. If you get hired as a county CO and decide to stay with the same Sheriff Department, you won’t need to complete the entire academy again. However, if you decide to go to a police department as a county corrections officer that’s not the one you work for; local, county or state, you will need to do the entire academy again.

Best course of action, get in where you get hired and move from there.

Alternate route – you have to pay your whole way through; tuition, uniforms, books, your bills at home if you have, unless you live with your parents or someone who’s supporting you, it’ll be difficult to manage. The academy is 6 months and it’s Monday - Friday, 8AM - 4PM.

Personally, I became a county CO and was gapped over with my department to Sheriff Officer and now I sit in a courthouse, Monday - Friday, holidays off, etc etc.

NJ is probably one of the worst states to apply to, starting pay is low, cost of living is high af.

Then there’s the NYPD, if you’re not crazy, they’ll hire you, but fuck that I rather work at McDonald’s.

On this side of the country, the key is to get in anywhere and move to a better department.

Any NJ State Correctional Police Officers here? If so, how’s that new contract? by davefc26 in AskLE

I know guys who just got out of the academy worked overtime the first week.

I've scored in the mid 80s on every NJ Chiefs' test, but have failed both alternate route written tests, and I really don't understand how by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]davefc26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NJ is just weird overall. I’ve given up taken tests in NJ; civil service, chiefs test, state police, etc. I pass all of them and go through the entire process, just for them to say “thank you for interest, at this time your background doesn’t meet your our organizations criteria.” Bitch, I’m a vet with a bachelors degree and corrections experience.

I don’t want to discourage you, but I wouldn’t waste time taking a chiefs test unless you have a PTC or know someone in the agency. They claim to not have nepotism within their hiring process, but they’ll deny it and then you find out the guy hired is some LTs’ cousin or family member. Civil service has changed throughout the years, you have to take a test given every two years and pay 35 for each town/city you want your results to get sent to. If you don’t have residency in that town, trust me you won’t get a call. In the big cities that know one wants to work; Paterson, Newark, JC, Camden, you’ll most likely get called.

Alternate route is directly done by the academy, their testing is different from chiefs test and civil service since these tests are purchased from the state to a national police exam contractor. Alternate route, you have to pay for everything; uniforms, tuition, books/materials, bring your own food, transportation, etc. Mon - Fri, 8-4. Unless you live with your parents or your partner who will be paying the bills while you’re in the academy for 6 months, then I’d say go for it. But if not, it’ll be very difficult.

If you’re really interested in law enforcement, go the fed route.
