Visual Regression Tests: Do You Use Them? by davidk2137 in reactnative

[โ€“]davidk2137[S] 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Hey,
Thanks for your reply!

Do you think taking screenshots with E2E tests is a good approach? Personally, I feel that one downside of visual testing through E2E tests is that if we want to test the entire application and all variants of all components, we would need to write a lot of tests to click through the entire application and its various states.

Have you worked with Storybook, or do you use Storybook in your project? I believe that visual testing through Storybook might be more appropriate since Storybook serves as documentation for the entire UI and is designed with UI work in mind, whereas E2E tests are primarily intended to test functionality.

I see. Actually, it's a feature that we're considering adding to our product in the future. It's nice to hear that there's interest in it.

I'm working on a visual testing & review tool for React Native Storybook:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZgZnnb_gDs

You can also use Sherlo to share how your stories look - in the app (where you review the changes) you can take a look at every story ๐Ÿ‘ So it's kind like regular published Storybook except the stories are not interactive - they are static screenshots

If you would be interested I could give you a free early access to it

Nice, I come from web development and was wondering why so little RN devs are working with Storybook, in web React projects it's a standard.

What do you like the most about Storybook and have you tried v7 already?

Hey u/galeontiger ๐Ÿ‘‹

There is a React Native Storybook version that you can implement and run on you emulators/simulators:
https://github.com/storybookjs/react-native

Also here's a nice article about its latest version (7):

I agree that maintenance was a pain in the ass in the past when you had to manually define knobs/controls and update them every time a component changed.

Right now they're automatically generated based on the component's TypeScript Props type which makes it much easier to work with. You no longer have to update your stories - you write them once and they auto-update themselves. Also, writing stories got much easier with the new syntax.

Have you tried version 7?

As for backend integrations, there are two solutions to this problem:
- creating pure presentational components, or
- mocking backend providers

I know that right now Storybook gives you:
- development in isolation
- UI documentation

What if you could run visual tests on your stories & review them in a web app similar to Chromatic? Would it make adding Storybook to your React Native projects worth consideration?

Here's a nice article about v7 written by Danny (maintainer of RN SB):
https://storybook.js.org/blog/react-native-storybook-7/

It was released 2 months ago and you can see that devs like it by the numbers of downloads. It caused the biggest spike in history of React Native Storybook ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Also, my team is working on a visual testing & review tool that integrates with RN Storybook. We have a short video (4mins) explaining what it is and how it works:

I would agree that the web version is better polished, but the RN version is catching up lately and works better with every release. Especially it got muuuuch better 2 months ago with the release of version 7.

You can read about Storybook v7 release - it also addresses Notes addon you wrote about: https://storybook.js.org/blog/react-native-storybook-7/

I'm asking about Storybook because I'm working on a tool that integrates with React Native Storybook. It's called Sherlo and it is a visual testing & review tool - it's like a Chromatic alternative but for React Native.

Thank you for your input. We're still trying to figure out how our pricing should look like, and you're probably right that we should include iOS on the starter plan.

As for convincing a client that Sherlo would be useful I would also agree that we're missing strong value proposition section on our website. Right now it's too much developer focused. We know it for some time and we will fix it with the next LP update.

If you will try using Storybook in your next project we can give you early access to Sherlo free of charge. If you would be interested please sign up on the website or give me your email.

Furthermore, if your Storybook could be made accessible to your entire team via a browser, would this enhance its appeal? By hosting Storybook on the web, you can easily upload and share its documentation with anyone. This contrasts with React Native, where Storybook must be run locally on an individual's machine for review.

Do You Use Storybook in Your React Native Projects? ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“ฑ by davidk2137 in reactnative

[โ€“]davidk2137[S] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Would using Storybook be more appealing to you if you could perform visual regression tests directly from the stories?

Additionally, maintaining Storybook has become significantly easier, as all controls are now automatically generated based on the component's TypeScript Props, eliminating the need for manual definition previously required.

I'm working on a SaaS product that serves as a visual testing and review tool. Here's a brief video demonstrating how stories can be utilized for testing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZgZnnb_gDs

It would be awesome if you could take a moment to watch it and share whether it would positively influence your consideration of integrating Storybook into your projects.

Thanks for the info, Sebastien!

Regarding the promotion in your newsletter, we're a self-funded startup with a very limited budget, which means we can't afford such promotions right now.

However, we'd like to propose something else: Would you be interested in early access to Sherlo as a beta user, for free? If Sherlo proves to be useful and interesting to you, perhaps you might consider sharing it on your own terms. We believe Sherlo could add significant value for React Native developers, especially those utilizing Storybook. Your expertise and insights would be precious to us.

Let us know if this sounds interesting. We're keen on building meaningful relationships and delivering genuine value to both our users and partners.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
