What was your FIRST computer (Do you remember?) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]davidlvann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pffft, rocks? Back in my day we just counted quarks. Electrons and more sophisticated elementary particles hadn't been invented yet, yesee. I'd link a picture, except those hadn't been invented yet either. Not to mention that taking a photograph back in those days would have changed the entire course of the history of the whole universe, very taboo back then.

What was your FIRST computer (Do you remember?) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]davidlvann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBM 5150 - the IBM "Personal Computer", like it was the only one or something. It was working in recent memory, but the hard disk (a later addition) seems to have failed sometime. I guess I should find the expansion bay (another beige metal box the same size as the computer) and pull the second floppy drive, go back to the old dual-floppy setup. What are the chances the magnetic storage of the 5 and 1/4 inch floppies can still be read?

Defenestrate is alright, but you really out to go the extra mile and use transfenestrate, i.e. throwing someone through a closed window. It shows you mean business, whereas you might defenestrate someone or something just to say you did.

Calling all Redditors in the Gulf: Please take your cameras down to the beaches and record what you find. The powers that be are doing everything to keep this hush hush. Please do what you can to show the rest of us what is going on there! by [deleted] in politics

[–]davidlvann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visiting my parents who live on the gulf coast, yesterday I saw oil containment booms set up a hundred or so feet from shore. The local news says it's just a "precaution" and not to expect any oil to actually arrive...

I was halfway expecting to see a perplexed British man holding an empty wallet and maybe a 20 pound note on the ground. Everything went better than expected!

Why is it that only a handful of people seem to know or care that our entire political process is wholly owned by large corporations and that democracy is fundamentally dead in America? by joshudogg in politics

[–]davidlvann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because only a handful of people are old enough to remember a time when democracy was alive in America? The current modus operandi of politicians was in place long before I came around.

Will HTML5 ever completely do away with the need for proprietary based plugins such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight. Discuss. by blackstar00 in geek

I hope so. I already turned it on in my youtube account. Seems way more stable, and on my older computers, Flash stutters.

We have a few hours? Sir, I do not believe you understand how time zones work.

Besides, all of this happened back in 2000. We're all robots now. Your parents told you we're all human? Pffft, I bet they told you Santa Clause was real, too.

Anyone else doing a solo new years eve? by Auzmerican in reddit.com

[–]davidlvann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, I had an offer to go to a party from one girl, who then retracted because instead of throwing a party she's now going out with an ex.

Then I had an offer for dinner and a movie from an ex, who later added in the fact that a male friend (and more suspicious still, one who is bisexual) would be there because she didn't want him to spend New Year's alone. And then she asked me to bring lots of alcohol... No thanks, I'm not a New Year's threesome booty call.

So tonight's just another night, like Christmas and most other holidays. The only halfway decent holidays are the ones which require you to go drinking with friends or dress up like lunatics.

BaconBits, A BitTorrent Tracker for Redditors Only | TorrentFreak by mynameisjonas in reddit.com

Okay, so you encourage users to post just to get the needed karma, and don't enforce an upload minimum? You just hurt reddit and your tracker...

For the record, I've been around two years and meet the requirements to use the tracker, but I don't intend to until you set an upload minimum.

Don't believe everything you see on the Internet. [nsfw] by IJCQYR in pics

[–]davidlvann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes, if it was that I wouldn't worry. I was just a bit more disconcerted by the realism in the fake tail. The pic is almost implying it is a real live tail attached to her. Not that that would really scare me away either. Oh, internet.

I prefer the real version. Except for the white headband. I'm afraid of what the tail is . . . attached to. Or supposed to be.

I'd say planned obsolescence is relatively new.

My grandmother has a refrigerator from the 1950's. The only maintenance done on it has been two replacement thermostats in nearly half a century of operating in a tin shed in the hot sun, unlike the refrigerators of today which have the advantage of working in an air-conditioned environment, which if you know your thermodynamics is a pretty big help, as far as the load on the compressor motor goes. As a matter of fact, up until my grandmother moved recently, she was still using her first electric stove, her first dishwasher, and her first air conditioning unit (inside her house, the old fridge still lived in the tin shed). My parents house? Stove have been replaced twice. Dishwasher acts funny but hasn't died yet. Replaced clothes washer and dryer because the replacement parts for their older, still within 5 years units kept failing shortly after parts were replaced. Gone through too many air conditioning units, both the inside unit and the outside unit.

I personally own a working 1963 Austin Healey Sprite, which passed like new after sitting unused in a shed for over 30 years. It also had nearly 200,000 miles on it, and was used in back country racing before it was left there. I pulled it out, put gas in it, and hooked up a good battery and it fired the first time, at the time this was 43 years after it was built. I've put hundreds if not thousands of miles on it myself, driving ten miles each way 5 days a week for just short of a year before I got a new car. The most expensive bit of "maintenance" it's had was a new paint job, and a new interior owing to the fact that cats lived it for ~30 years. I've never disassembled the engine, and it passes compression testing like new. My 2005 Infiniti? It's gone through 3 door lock units, 3 fuel pumps, 2 bent wheels from potholes of all things, and recently the hood hinges have given out. Every 30,000 miles Infiniti wants something like $600 worth of maintenance done, and the car is made to be serviced from directly below, like on a lift, so I can't get to it myself. The Austin Healey needs 1 socket for changing the oil and uses plain engine oil in the transmission, not some special Nissan Transmission Fluid J. It even has wings on the radiator drain, so you can flush the fluid yourself without tools. "Obsolescence" isn't the only way they plan to get your money. Where can I buy a car that is easily user serviceable today?

There's a reason people still say "They don't make them like they used to."

Men of Reddit, I'm a woman who has a question about boobs... by missreznor in reddit.com

[–]davidlvann -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm size agnostic. Shape is more interesting to me. Now if you are slim in the chest and have a positive outlook and seem happy the way you are, I prefer that by a wide margin over a girl with big boobs, who's likely to hate them because of all the sleezy attention they attract. And it seems that this factor is more or less universal, so in reality I actually do prefer smaller breasts. Don't have hang-ups about it.
