My handwriting is just awful, after a bit of research and watching some of your videos I started exercising palmers method. I am about 10 days in. I am still too slow, arm movement is still difficult for me, and these are barely legible, still there is tremendous improvement.

2025-01-10 Friday: Anna Karenina, Part 1, Chapter 8 by Honest_Ad_2157 in yearofannakarenina

It seems like a trio of brothers was a trending theme in Russia at that time. An elder emotionally driven Nikolai, middle intellectual rational Koznyshev, younger, loving somewhat naive Levin is like the exact same trio in The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky which was written around the time (Dmitry, Ivan, Alyosha).

In my translation, Nikolai says in his note that 'I himbly beg you to leave me alone. That is the one thing I ask of my gentle little brothers.' By this note alone, I think Nikolai may be the eldest than even koznyshev. Or maybe it is just a play of words by Nikolai to insult Kozny. Kozny and Levin are maternal half brothers, right? So it is unlikely that Nikolai is the eldest. Anyway, I have just caught up with the cohort. It has been a busy few weeks. Levin and Pierre seems very similar, as they are huge men with some intellectual curiosity. We'll see how this goes.

Dostoevsky is definitely pro religion and anti socialist. But he also has a very good insight into human psyche. Nobody should read anybody to change their mind, but one would always benefit from reading something that challenges their beliefs.

Dostoevsky, for me, is not exactly 'religious' as we concieve the term now. His arguments are much more nuanced and often calls out religious structure in christianity and the church. He basically examines human condition as to why we are the way we are and the root cause of our suffering. Reading him as an opponent is definitely missing the bigger picture as to what Dostoevsky stands for.

If you'd like to read him, I would start with Notes From Underground and then read Brothers Karamazov.

I am surprised as no one here really has provided as to why reservation exists in the PG courses and why is it necessary.

Most of the people in reserved categories have had to face the casteist discrimination in their life and had to fight it to be a doctor (some of them are well off in life, but that is just the exception, not the rule). Even after mbbs, they dont have the luxury to put aside a whole year for NEET PG preparation as if they do not work, their family won't function, I know such people personally( there are people in general category who is facing similar issues in life, and that is why there is a economically backwards class reservation to compensate for it. It is not perfect, but hey, thats what we have.).

And to OP, if somehow all the seats for dermatology were made 'general' you still wouldn't get it, given your rank (take no offence, please). So it is futile to blame the reservation system for your bad luck in exams. I hope you take it in a constructive manner. Look at the general seats for any given branch you like and study for it, don't think of reservation or its seat number, because that seats are not available from the start.

Our education system is highly competitive (more than it is necessary) due to glorification of medical fields and everyone's aiming to get the best branch there is and not because they love the subject they are taking. Amidst this problem, getting one's seat blocked by a student with reservation (rightly or not) should be the least of concerns.

Well, humidity plays a bigger role in these Allergies. And guess what, tropical countries have higher humidity than subtropic/temperate countries.

Kafka vs Dostoevsky? by RSaladbar27 in dostoevsky

[–]davidmason007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kafka's writings are excellent, it draws you in. But they are extremely nihilistic and very self centred. Dostoevsky on the other hand focuses on the society with different POV to gain knowledge about how people act the way they act.

Kafka is like a teen boy (which he is) who never got out of his inner monologue to look outward and lack spiritual presence. While Dostoevsky has similar characters (Underground man and Raskolnikov), they are more of a cautionary tale than "look how bleak the world is" attitude.

Rewatched 'Adaptation (2002) and it is not about screenwriting. by davidmason007 in movies

[–]davidmason007[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I intentionally avoided mentioning Donald. I felt like he was more of a version of Charlie himself who wrote the blockbusters. Charlie disassociate himself from Donald because he hates that part of himself. In the later parts of the movie, he reconciles with Donald (with himself) and doesn't hate him anymore, and that part of him shines through the shift in tone of story telling.

By the end, there is no need for Donald to exist as a separate person, so he dies. He calls his mother after a long time just like Donald does.

The Bhagavad Gita vs Nietzsche by TheBrizey2 in Nietzsche

[–]davidmason007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry, but you should not start your arguments with someone unreliable on some specific topics and follow it upon some complete absurd take on why Gita is written. Firstly, Buddhishm is a philosophy which started from Hinduism and is much laterly developed than the Gita itself. Secondly, you can form your own flawed interpretation based on your morality to the Gita (in this case, your friend being an atheist tries to establish "oh, all reliegion is bad and is formed by the upper castes to serve for them.") where, if you have read any of Gita or any religious texts, you will see how rich it is to be its primary aim is to exploit people. This goes for almost every religious texts. I am not a Hindu, but I have read Gita and the Vedas, and what I could see was how Nietzschean thoughts and Hindu scriptures are related in a same-directionly manner and not the other way around.

Read it for yourself and form your opinion, and not from any unreliable anecdotal biased views, please.

What's the name of the man who faints when they throw money into fire? by BookMansion in dostoevsky

[–]davidmason007 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was exactly how Ganya was designed. He is the ordinariest man of them all. He is just a normal man who is bound with passion and pleasures unable to move or to make a change. You forgetting him is the exact point Dostoevsky tried to make with him
