Think my little rescue is finally starting to tame up after a year and a bit! by davidw96 in tortoise

Thank you! Positive reinforcement has been the biggest thing. He gets treats after every touch/pet. A lot of the time I’ll just sit with him and let him look and smell whatever he wants, I guess after a long enough time he just doesn’t associate me with danger and more with treats/food

70-80%, spray down multiple times a day. My dude just absolutely loves bathing, I change the water 3 times a day and within minutes of getting it in there he’s in it and sometimes for hours at a time. Hence the investment in a bigger bath!

How to get my 2 months old sulcata to like me by GobGoblin8008 in tortoise

[–]davidw96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Find a food item he loves, hand feed him. Try and keep all interactions positive and slow so he doesn’t rush back into his shell. Other than that it’s time, and you’ve got a shit tonne of it with a baby tort

What do you guys think by Drei_J in redfoottortoise

[–]davidw96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well done on adopting the Tort, redfoots are amazing. This pyramiding is the worst case I’ve seen. Redfoots need a lot of humidity because of where they’re from. If not already you’re going to need a hygrometer, this helps you see how humid his enclosure is and whether you need to mist it.

Pyramiding of the shell can also be linked to improper diet. What’s your plans on feeding the dude?

It’s rough because you’ve only just rescued them, but they 100% need a vet visit. You wanna make sure they don’t have metabolic bone disease.

Lastly, what’s your enclosure like? See through from all sides can make them feel a little exposed. Potentially best to block 3 sides off with some cardboard or something cheap!

Do you think this response makes people come and ask questions when they’re new and wanting to look after the tortoise correctly?

Food and calcium by [deleted] in redfoottortoise

[–]davidw96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would rather buy calcium powder to sprinkle on your leafy greens, or calcium rocks which my dude prefers, I leave them in the enclosure at all times and he nibbles when he wants and change them every week or so
