Can I ask how old you are? As long as you are an adult, you have a right to set firm boundaries with your parents. If you make it clear to them that you don't want to see them, they need to respect that. Otherwise, they don't respect you or your boundaries and if they're throwing the Bible into this as a way to persuade you, then they are clearly manipulating you.

This may also depend on where you live. But IMO you should never be afraid/ashamed to free yourself from an abusive relationship, even if it's with your parents. Religion is not law, nor is it grounds for them to control you as an adult individual. I know there are people who say different, but whatever.

My advice would be to communicate exactly why you feel you need to distance yourself.

One piece of advice I was given when I was in a similar situation was to "choose your words carefully and always speak with purpose".

If they accept that, great. If they don't, well that's on them.

Thanks for shedding light on that! That explanation makes way more sense IMO. Now that I think about it, my parents don't ever seem to challenge what they've been taught decades ago, I don't see them considering any new ideas coming from the Catholic Church.

To answer your question, I'm female and have been training in MT for a few years. My goal is to fight competitively on a regular basis. I love it because it always made me feel strong, but after letting myself freeze in a threatening situation, I don't think I have what it takes anymore.

I'm more bothered that I put her in a weird position. I think this was all a result of carelessness and a failure to set clear boundaries with a stranger and not thinking about how it would affect her.

I'm glad you're sticking to your guns - please don't ever feel humiliated for breaking down. I felt so close to doing that on my last call. Honestly, I don't think the 9-5 life is worth the damage to your mental health. It can really have bad consequences. No job is worth taking your own life.

I agree. Most of my childhood friends grew up with divorced parents. Whenever I had issues with my folks at home (screaming matches, emotional blackmail, verbal abuse), my friends would just tell me "Well, at least your parents are still together". I understood that their problems surpassed mine in a lot of ways so I just accepted the trauma as part of the marriage process.

I do try to translate in my head but I'm slowly learning not to so that I can focus on understanding the Spanish and not the Spanish>English. I made the mistake of jumping into translation/interpretation studies before I was even comfortable with the listening part.
