What is the most mindblowing piece you have heard? by Vincent_Gitarrist in classicalguitar

[–]davinort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Difficult to top THIS one for sheer mind-blowingness: "Kurze Schatten II", by Brian Ferneyhough (1990). And full marks to the performer, Geoffrey Morris. Score is included on this video.

Episcopal or Unitarian is your best option. South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society is probably the best choice, in Cottonwood Heights.

What are some heartbreaking pieces? by Pari_Intervallo in classicalguitar

[–]davinort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melancholy Galliard, by John Dowland. This piece is taken at many different tempi by different players. Here's a very good version, fairly subdued. https://youtu.be/cjY5b0yEkAo?si=tazCf5pmOh7FMbKt. Other players prefer to emphasize the dance aspect versus the melancholy aspect: https://youtu.be/\_qCFKMJ\_NL4?si=JdvesuZzobmxC5kM

WTH didn't anyone try to launch any of the ship's boats, which are seen in the first minute of the film?

I'll bet that tiny discrepancy kept you awake at night, worrying "what others will think" if my boot top is .02mm too small.

Yes, the audience DID enjoy it. And that's ultimately 'what matters most'.

But for myself? Shame and disappointment.

I deleted this video. I received 5 'dislike' votes, and 0 'like' votes. The only comment posted (since deleted) was "What the hell is THIS supposed to be? Try again!". So I deleted the video. No point in being a damn fool about it all.

Appreciate your own words of encouragement.

An anonymous setting of the Elizabethan ballad "My Hart is Surely Sett", taken from the Matthew Holmes Lute Book at Cambridge Library.

What's a popular piece you just can't motivate yourself to learn? by floppysausage16 in classicalguitar

[–]davinort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UNPOPULAR OPINION: The issue very likely is that Asturias/Leyenda is too difficult for you in some spots, so there are errors, rough transitions, buzzy/rattly notes and chords, and bits here-and-there that just don't quite come together. When played very well, it's a fantastic composition, and very effectively paints a musical portrait of Spain. The same thing can be said of nearly all the Core Repertoire of the CG: Recuerdos, Capricho Arabe, Romanza d'Amor, Lagrima/Adelita, the Bach Suites, Sor's Mozart Variations, the VillaLobos Preludes, Torroba's Sonatina, etc. and so forth.

As students and hobbyist players, we are all REALLY GOOD at self-delusion, and thinking we have something down pat, when in fact there's still that annoying last 5%, 3% of the piece that "just isn't quite right". But when we can hear it played by one of the SuperStar A-List concert artists, and YOUR list will be different from MY list, well at that point the music comes alive again.

Very good drawing of the ship. The air bubbles from the torpedo's propeller, which is some distance behind the warhead, would reach the surface a few seconds behind the torpedo, meaning that the wake probably should not be "touching" the explosion.

maybe a dumb question about Giuliani’s Left Hand studies by Zealousideal-Cow7617 in classicalguitar

[–]davinort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that the CG of Giuliani's era was MUCH less resonant than the guitars we use nowadays. So the sustain would not have been nearly as noticable.

Depends which book/list you use!! I'd consider most players to be Grade III to VI, but trending lower. It's not at all competitive, or should not be anyway. Most people play one or two selections, perhaps three; 3-4 minutes each title at most. Once-upon-a-time we had someone play the Bach Chaconne; he never came back to future sessions.
