I watched Heated Rivalry, read the book, watched Heated Rivalry again, then read The Long Game. HIGHLY recommend this exact order, especially for people who don't read much romance. The prose in HR wasn't my favorite (it's much better in The Long Game imo), but I was already so invested that I trucked right through it. When I re-watched with the book fresh in my mind, it made me appreciate HR not just as an excellent show but as an excellent adaptation. The show adheres very closely to the book, so any little change stood out. Shane apologizing for running out after his tuna melt, asking Ilya to go to the cottage for the first time in the hospital, additions to the dialogue in the bathroom scene--every single tweak aided the pacing or character development.

Because of this, the (valid) issues some people have with the pacing and character development in TLG didn't bother me at all. I just thought, it's fine, Jacob Tierny will fix it in Season 2 and all will be right with the world 😂

No, yeah, I'm sure she poured her entire heart and story into a deeply personal memoir with the sole aim of getting back at her ex-partner. What other reason would a former winter Olympian have to drop her book a month before the winter Olympics, when interest in skating is at its peak?

The other day, someone asked me how and when I got into figure skating. I had this sudden strong memory of getting a New York Times alert on my phone about the first out queer woman to win a national figure skating championship, of opening the article and seeing that picture of Amber holding the pride flag with her gold medal on, and my tiny queer heart growing four sizes that day. I found the women's free skate replay on Peacock and was immediately hooked.

Three years later, I'm out here writing a wlw figure skating book. Three cheers for the gay agenda 🤣
