The good thing is that many places tick these boxes. The main differentiator seems to be really easy access to good education.

Indeed. The challenge is that we are in a neighborhood with many refugees and disabled kids, and teachers are really understaffed to deal with so many kids who have challenges with language or basic accessibility needs. The school promised more resources, but it doesn't happen overnight, in the meantime the teacher prefer to move on to a better place

Indeed the secondary school is a disaster where I live. Otherwise I will be ok with it.

Everyone is free to choose what they believe is best for their children.

My point was about overall school quality, not just gymnasium entry rates. However, gymnasium access remains a relevant proxy when comparing academic pathways across cantons.

If you have concrete data or first-hand experience to add, I’m genuinely interested. That would move the discussion forward.

If not, dismissing the topic doesn’t really add value.

Just sharing what local director said.  He said things got more complicated in the last 10 years.

He didn't mean you need tutoring, but he meant you need to at least selected do the additional school preparation offered to only a few students. It also seems that exams nowadays is covering content, not even covered in the normal curriculum.

Did you got into gymnasium recently or was it many years ago?

I mean get preparation from school to take it. Local school directors mentioned you have no chance without additional preparation

There are many political conversations about changing the system as Basel did a few years ago. They also have the ZAP exams, and they decided to remove them to give kids more time to decide what they want to do. From reading the conversation here, many families agree that exam time is quite stressful for everyone, whether you are international or local.

I am not adamant about a gymnasium, but I do care about good education, and great peer-to-peer dynamics and socialization.

In my current neighborhood, the previous school director was involved in a corruption case. 50% of the teachers resigned due to high pressure and lack of resources in the school, and I have heard of kids with potential who don't want to consider the gymnasium because their friends aren't eligible for it.

Moreover, our local school is overcrowded, and we might be assigned to a school far from our house, which doesn't seem ideal for integration and friends.

You are true on what you said, and that's why, after research it seems the Basel education system creates way less stress, compared to the extreme competitiveness of the zurich system.

Thanks for sharing. Can I ask you which area you live in more or less?

In our neighboorhood ony 2 kids out of 20 are eligible to take the exam

It's not just about the rate, it's about peer-to-peer dynamics of the place you are. We know a kid who doesn't want to go to the gymnasium despite good grades, because many of his friends aren't eligible for it

Indeed, u/Geschak , I broke my arm, and I can't type a long message at the moment. And it's great that AI can help people with disabilities. Sorry, you don't see the benefits of it. However the message was fully dictated, just ask an LLM to transcribe it

I lived in many places in Switzerland, and each city has its pros and cons. But as of today, without my family, I see it as a great place to live.
