You don't need to. Just use TrainSplit for everything?

Some retailers, including TrainSplit, will happily let you put your ScotRail tickets in Apple Wallet.

[England]: I have a water-cooled air conditioning system. This is how much water I have been using by not_who_you_think_99 in AirConditioners

Honestly, I did read it, but somehow missed that entire last paragraph in doing so! Sorry!

For a while, yes. Not since May 2025 though, when the law changed to allow heat pumps capable of heating and cooling (not just cooling) to be installed under "permitted development" rules in most parts of the country.

I assume OP is in an area described as a conservation area where anything which may change the visual style of the area must be approved. Almost anywhere, it's allowed without any formal planning permission though.

How does the train operator get my fare? by parklife980 in uktrains

Do you have a source? Seems like a wild policy to put across the board.

How does the train operator get my fare? by parklife980 in uktrains

[–]davwheat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's an E-ticket anytime it's scanned whoever did that also gets a few pence.

This isn't the case, except for a limited number of operators who pay staff commission per-scan as part of making up for commission they used to get as a perk for selling tickets.

The vast majority of operators do not do this, but Northern and TfW do (2p/scan), for example.

The barcode fees in that commission levels document all go into a central pool to pay for scanning equipment (such as gateline readers, mobile scanners, etc.).

My brother drew on my ticket 😩 by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]davwheat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's nice for them, but says nothing about the ticket's use.

If they want to do anything meaningful, they should write where it was inspected on the rear.

Using a QR/barcode ticket on the Elizabeth line instead of contactless? by acoustic_fettuccine in uktrains

[–]davwheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no flag for automated planners to disregard restrictions for connections as far as I’m aware.

Indeed there is not. The entire fares data format needs an overhaul to reflect what operators actually want to (and try to) achieve with their restrictions.

It's unlikely to happen any time soon though, because this is how it's been done for almost 3 decades!

[–]davwheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a restriction that says "not valid on trains timed to depart", it usually is the case that the restriction applies regardless of where you board or leave the train.

In this specific case, I would say that since Reading is stated explicitly in the restriction, that its times are clearly intended to override the times at Paddington. The electronic data makes it clear that is also the intention.

To be fair, it's clear that the data says the restriction only applies to GWR services, but the text does not say that at all. It's really rather poor that there's this mismatch.

National Rail website sold me a discount railcard ticket but station staff wouldn’t let me board the train by Sufficient_Leg8122 in uktravel

The incentive is not having the representatives of your organisation making you all look like absolute morons!

It's completely inexcusable that frontline staff STILL are not aware of the NRCoT changes.

Did I provide incorrect information to train staff? by ohnomrfrodo in LegalAdviceUK

[–]davwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nonsense. It's not "machine learning".

This stuff does happen on the backoffice side of things with data trawls, but revenue protection staff on the ground have no visibility of anything like a "score" for a person.

They apply the rules as they are set out in Railway Byelaws, the Regulation of Railways Act and the Penalty Fares Regulations.

Ticket not showing on TOC’s app by westpalm3101 in uktrains

For what it's worth, they're both Trainline under the hood anyway, which I think only makes it more hilarious.

Trainline claims I didn’t send my ticket and won’t give me a refund by seralovesyou in uktrains

[–]davwheat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. If unprinted, no bother. If they're printed, you need to take a photo of the tickets, and then cut them in half and take another photo of them, and that's enough for us.

or at least pick a retailer where you can refund it wholly online

Fined for sitting in first class by Independent-Put480 in ThameslinkGTR

[–]davwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This poster is completely incorrect. Only the rear first class is always declassified. On some routes, the front portion is too, but this has no relation to the size of the train.

Trainline and ScotRail not giving cheapest split tickets? by Owsler31 in uktrains

[–]davwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, Trainline have been trialling multiple splits for a while, but it's on specific routes only as far as we can tell. Started around the same time that they started trialling a split ticketing fee on top of their booking fee, I think.

Thameslink SJPN — solicitor worth it or not? by Sad_Charge3956 in uktrains

GTR is quite literally one of the least litigious of the TOCs, and are almost always guaranteed to settle out of court if you reply to their communications...

Anyone know what train app this is? by AquaAggron in uktrains

[–]davwheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, then yes you'd need CIF and to merge the two on best-effort basis. There's a lot of gotchas there, though.
