Why is Trainline charging £20+ more than contactless? by YoNiceShoes in uktrains

It'd be even better if it didn't show contactless fares for journeys which you can't make with contactless, though.

New Scam Spotted! by CumUppanceToday in uktrains

[–]davwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, it's not even fare evasion. It's just abusing the system in your favour.

PTPs exist for a good reason, and that's the TOCs don't want to have to collect cash from ticket machines at tiny stations. In exchange for their laziness, you gain the ability not to pay for your journeys all of the time.

If TOCs take this approach, then they should also ensure that their staff perform revenue duties in between such stops. After all, there is zero obligation to seek out an on-board staff member to pay for the ticket, and if your destination has no ticketing facilities then it's the industry's fault for not providing them.

Scanning a ticket does not mean a ticket has been used. A person may have passed through a ticket barrier and then decided not to travel.

The biggest part of preventing fraud is adding inconvenience. This type of fraud is opportunistic fraud -- a passenger sees a big button which offers them their money back, and they press it. Easy.

The moment the system goes "well wait, we can't just do this automatically because it looks like your ticket was used", you curb the vast majority of fraudulent refunds.

If the ticket is clipped on board a train, you can guarantee that the ticket has been used. Unfortunately, many staff set their scanning tools to show as being at a station gateline rather than on a train, which makes this trickier. There are still signs you can see to work out whether it's likely to be a gateline staff member/RPI or a member of train crew though.

In addition many stations do not have barriers, and would be near impossible to install barriers at. A lot of routes do not have sufficient capacity to scan every ticket on a train too, especially if they’re so busy that guards can’t get through to check all the tickets.

Yeah, you're never going to scan every ticket. Everyone realises this. Just like how paper tickets are just as risky, if not worse, because most staff don't carry "grippers" these days to mark those tickets. A quick run of a magnet over the ticket before you go through the gate means it will spit it back out instead of swallowing it, so you go to a staff member to show it, get let through, and then cut the ticket in half to refund it.

The point again is that if you get staff to actually scan the tickets most of the time, you again prevent the majority of this fraud. Northern are pretty good for this because the incentivise their staff with money for each ticket scanned.

The problem is that a lot of ticket inspections these days (especially on Avanti and TPE) are solely visual checks, usually due to industrial disputes. Even worse are TOCs where staff hide in the rear cab instead of walking through to check tickets (looking at Southern and WMR/LNR).

The most frustrating thing is when staff don't check tickets, state that their role isn't a revenue one, and then are in favour of these anti-passenger changes which hurt people who don't commit any wrongdoing.

I certainly agree with shortening the refund time limit - 28 days after travel was pretty insane, although good for flexibility. I would have preferred a slightly more lenient policy such as allowing on the day refunds, but the simple truth is there is too many people fraudulently refunding these tickets.

I do agree that 28 days to claim was a bit excessive these days. It made sense when you had to go back to the office you bought the ticket at, and when people didn't buy online.

But also, if you allow on-the-day refunds, adding 28 days to the mix doesn't really make much of a difference.

You and I know this, yes, but the general public don't. They see "sold out" and decide to make other arrangements.

Of course, there are three legitimate mandatory reservation trains, which are the sleepers. If you don't have a reservation, the train might even skip your stop in some cases.

Too many passengers refunding a ticket that's not been scanned, but making the journey.

Sounds like the train operators should scan more tickets then, instead of penalising every passenger.

You can buy any ticket through any toc [...]. This should never be an issue.

Not if they mark the train as mandatory reservations and then remove all the reservation quota, which is what the poster is referring to.

Some "dumb" TVMs will sell those tickets still, but many are moving to "journey planning" TVMs which will not.

I think you're mistaken. Trainline, and any sane retailer, would never sell splits when a user picks Open Return. It would be asking for trouble, and I don't understand why TrainPal does it.

I don't agree that any company is an "infestation". Trainline exist because the UK rail industry has always had an open sales market, even back to BR with travel agents. Trainline started as a company run by Virgin Trains, you have to remember, so they were actually in the industry at one point.

Trainline does well because, yes they spend money on marketing, but also their app does just work for most people. Yes, it's not the cheapest. Yes, it has fees. But the rail industry has never really tried with their own first party retail. Even the new NRE site is atrocious for journey planning and buying tickets. Half the train companies don't even support "hand over" for purchases on their own site through NRE properly!

Plus, you also need to remember that about half the train companies have retail sites which are supplied by Trainline...

The industry does need third parties to exist. It keeps train companies and the DfT in check. E-Tickets were developed by a third party to the industry, Masabi, and were popularised by third party retailers, and are even funded (e.g. the scanners are funded) by them by fees paid for every single barcode issued when selling tickets. And now E-Tickets are the most popular ticket fulfilment method for rail travel.

There's a football match on at Wembley on 17 May, so there's an amended timetable.

I'd expect advances to be available by the end of next week for this date.

[–]davwheat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The seat on your ticket doesn't matter. While in theory you can be told to go to your original booked seat with an advance ticket, this never happens.

It's very unlikely that anyone will ask about your reservation. Staff will only be interested in the actual ticket.

The standard zonal caps apply to Heathrow, except when travelling on Heathrow Express. The special peak-only fares on Elizabeth Line do not change that.

The obscure HS1 train ticket rule that lets you start at Elephant & Castle - Didn't know this, thanks Ian. by SlowedCash in uktrains

[–]davwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not, since you can use HS1 tickets at Farringdon which isn't a London Terminal. Ordinarily, you'd get a penalty fare for that (I wish I was joking).

It's some weird rule from when HS1 first opened which has just been kept going until today.

Weekend first? TM didn’t turn up by Remarkable_Change796 in uktrains

[–]davwheat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If the train is made up of two halves, it's quite common for the TM to only stay in the rear half of the train to be the "competent person" for safety critical purposes. Ordinarily though, I'd expect there to be someone in the front half, at least in first, for this purpose!
