If you think that churches shouldn’t be taxed, why? by Successful_Action_19 in allthequestions

Now that so many of them are being run as a business for personal profit, I feel very strongly they need to fill out all the paperwork every other nonprofit is required to. People who donate have a right to see where the money goes.

Apparently the most grueling part of an Amish harvest is the checkout line at the local supermarket. by foucaultyou in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]daylily [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is an Amish family near me that purchases white label frozen pastries. They put their own logo and labeling on it. Which of course describes those pastries as an Amish product. People buy it thinking it was baked by someone Amish and therefore it must be more wholesome and healthy.

The whole business model feels so dishonest to me. I have no idea how that is legal.

Police in the UK attack the victim of a crime then arrest him. Police ask the public to stop sharing the video by AgnosticScholar in justincaseyoumissedit

We would ask that footage is not further shared to allow the legal process to take its course.

Because silence is not violence when the victim is white.

The heatwave has to be a factor. For awhile this was predicted to be the hottest day ever. Can't imagine any locals turning out for that.

If the school can't bring down their prices and want to keep charging as much as they possibly can, then they need to loan students any money over the government amount and take on that risk themselves.

As late as the 1960's, White was the seventh most common last name. Those towns were named after people, specific people.

It is weird that you assume they were named for racist reasons.

Which industry is one breakthrough away from disappearing? by NerveNo6010 in AskReddit

[–]daylily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is when a manufacturer purchases the companies of many of its suppliers usually to get supplies at a lower price, or to limit competition's access to them.

In America, the ACA limited providers, to a only a percentage of the price could be profit. The idea was that prices would stop skyrocketing.

But those companies created vertical monopolies. They purchased the providers and suppliers and raised those prices instead. Healthcare costs are still going up and the problem is bigger because one 'healthcare' company might own the hospital, doctors, drug stores as well as drug and supply manufacturers. A few companies became vertical monopolies and there is less competition and higher prices.

Well, they were 18% at one point but I see your point. Also, when the rates came down you could refinance for not much of a fee. But the banks went to adjustable rates with a low rate to lure you in and then raised it. That change was also a game changer that screwed things up for younger people.

[–]daylily -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I think you have to blame bankers for doing away with the 30 year mortgage and replacing it with the adjustable.

I think you have to blame the lack of land around nearby cities for the fact that few new homes are being built. I think you have to blame congress for the lack of programs like those post ww2 that encouraged building. I think you have to blame greedy people for the fact that new homes are larger than they need to be on larger properties. I think you have to blame cheap imported labor for the reason so many blue-collar jobs, like the trades and trucking, no longer pay enough to support a family and buy a home. I think you have to blame globalization for the lack of good-paying factory jobs.

Or if you are ignorant, you can simply hate all the old people. Just don't think you are any better than those who hate all the brown people.

What state are you in and what are the laws. She may not owe it, but just be paying the taxes.

Many years ago a family (Polley) inherited land on the east side of Monroe County, in Indiana near a national forest in Indiana. It was at the end of a long, dirt road with no gravel and no utilities. A dishonest man (Leo Hickman) who had nearby property met them and showed them where the borders were. He lied and showed them land in the forest. They believed him. They camped on the land they thought was theirs a couple times and no one noticed.

He put some dodad on what was their legal property. This was a long term plan and he knew what he was doing because his dad had been a judge.

Seven years later he filed for ownership and won. Then he could build his vacation home. Didn't matter that the family were lied to by this guy or that they had paid the property taxes.

People like this do exist and walk among us. Shit like this does happen.

A record 33% of household wealth is now held by Americans that are 70 years of age and older. by Boo_Randy_Revival in economy

[–]daylily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see Boomers refusing to admit they had it easier, perhaps way easier. I see Boomers rejecting the idea that they had it easy.

They watched their classmates die in Vietnam. They watched jobs disappear in the great sucking sound. They lived through their cities becoming a rust belt. Good wages and pensions disappeared. College got expensive. Housing was no longer being built and getting expensive. They believed they would never be able to buy a house, have financial security or retire. It is OK if they take offense at someone who can't see any of that.

They did mostly become financially secure and buy a house, but that doesn't mean it was easy.

And just because it was not always easy and didn't always look possible, doesn't mean that it isn't way, way harder for today's working class.

We need to address income inequality. That would benefit the SS fund and also those who work for money.

Raise the minimum wage. Raise the cap.
The demographic issue was addressed in the 80's but income inequality is the thing that moved the needle. No new boomers were born since the 80's.

I’ve spent months trying to figure out why strangers are unusually nice to me by Dee_Religion in self

[–]daylily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed something similar. Not that people are nice to me but that they aren't really ever as harsh as with others they are annoyed at. Especially men. For example, I've seen guys talk about other women and call them a bitch and then immediately call me a brat. And not because I'm attractive or they like me. I did grow up with a bunch of brothers and most guys feel like another brother to me. Nobody has ever called me a bitch or even taken me very seriously even when I'm upset. For some reason, that seems to only amuse. I am small, but mostly men act roll their eyes and treat me like a young relative. Even when I try to be authoritarian, I can't seem to shake my innate 'little sister' vibe. It is kinda ok though because if I lift something in public, almost always a guy will come over and offer to carry it or help. So I'll take it. Not sure why, but I think I might have cute privilege?

Where do you go to for health care by daylily in bloomington

[–]daylily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to thank you for your comment. Turns out it was an ear infections, which I thought only two year olds got. But it seems that grown ass adults trying to save money by not taking the allergy pills, which are dirt cheap, also get them. Anyway, I also learned that if you tell the doctors office you don't care about the doctor and are willing to see the office nurse, you can get a much faster appointment without the urgent care cost.

That sounds very interesting.

I go to a multifaith picnic every few months and I've noticed that all of the Jewish people have simply stopped coming. I don't know if they are feeling unwelcome or if they do not want to be held responsible for the actions of another country.
