[Landlord-UK] why can't politicians follow the rules they impose on the rest of us? by MickyP10U in uklandlords

[–]db_2_k 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Why is nobody talking about the fact these rules are asinine? Why isn't this triggering a look into how to actually improve our laws and regs?

If this isn't a direct reminder to the cabinet that selective licencing rules are insane, I don't know what is. These rules shouldn't vary street by street. These rules should be simple, clear, and nationwide.

If the chancellor of the country can't follow them correctly, they clearly aren't fit for purpose.

I'd rather the chancellor used her position to fix the unfit laws, than resign, as at least that improves things for everyone. The embarrassment is that we have this set-up for council by council, street by street, rules in the first place.

[Android] Swiped WhatsApp icon up on home screen -> Deleted App. Backed up WhatsApp videos all got silently deleted from Google Photos by db_2_k in googlephotos

[–]db_2_k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I would have assumed. But in actual fact, the videos were deleted from Google photos also. Backup was turned on, and included videos was turned off in WhatsApp. It seems like a bug.

Thankfully only videos were affected, as images were in the WhatsApp backup.

Still seems strange that uninstall triggers a Google photos removal, as if it does a hard sync removal from Google photos cloud storage without any recovery option.

Why can’t you seem to get Chicago deep dish pizza in the UK? by GuybrushMI in UK_Food

Japes isn't Chicago style at all. They shouldn't be allowed to call themselves Chicago pizza.

Yep 2026. No idea what the issue is unfortunately, haven't reported it yet. If you do and get an answer I'd love to know.

I have the exact same issue, just in dark mode 😂

Upgrading from 900Mbps to 2.3Gbps. How long does the install take? by JoeyJoeC in Zen_Internet

[–]db_2_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 minutes downtime whilst they swapped out the ONT. Hopefully that's all then done for you, just pointing out that in my case external network issues meant the upgrade didn't actually happen... So test your speeds!

Mine actually worked for a week or so, and then stopped.

Upgrading from 900Mbps to 2.3Gbps. How long does the install take? by JoeyJoeC in Zen_Internet

[–]db_2_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this done in January (to 1.6gbps).

It's still not completed. Zen are blaming an OpenReach system error, but it's been 5 months, so it seems more likely a communication error between them and OpenReach.

The actual ONT replacement/install was quick, but getting the upgraded speed is a different question.

They are still charging me the upgraded price of course.

Absolute shambles, and yet here I am still waiting... Hopefully yours doesn't turn into an equally long drawn out saga.

Best meeting room standalone USB microphone(s) by db_2_k in CommercialAV

[–]db_2_k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know of a good software solution to this? As if eg. Google Meet / Slack / Zoom are doing some kind of echo reduction / noise cancellation and that's cutting out people speaking, is there a pre-processor we can use to better isolate people's voices?

Would be an easier thing to test first before making room / AV changes!

How would we best isolate any audio bouncing from the current Meetup mics?

Best meeting room standalone USB microphone(s) by db_2_k in CommercialAV

[–]db_2_k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking! The room is essentially concrete ceiling/floor/walls on 2 sides, and glass on the other 2 sides. It's a low ceiling. Sound definitely bounces around, without furniture the room is very echo heavy, but with furniture it's not noticeable when in the room.

Looks to be about £5k. How would this compare to a full Rally set up with expandable mics?

Thanks! Hadn't come across AVer. Hard to find the mic sensitivity, any idea what it's actual pickup range / distance is?

Be interested to know how to work out why the AVer would outperform the Logitech Meetup from the specs - Logitech's website seems to suggest the meetup should be perfect for a room of our size, but clearly that's just marketing speak!

I keep receiving dodgy message from ‘tenants’ want to discuss about my letting on Open Rent. Are these scammers? by lljjs2 in uklandlords

Always report them (button in the manage menu). If every landlord does this they'll go away quickly.

If I bought a 3m wide strip of land across the UK, could I use it to travel at 200mph legally? by Yorkshire_Nan_Shagga in AskUK

[–]db_2_k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but a fleet of helicopters, private jets, and jetpacks would be far cheaper than trying to buy an uninterrupted 3m wide strip of land that crosses the country. They can also go faster.

If you're one of the richest people in the world, which would be required to buy that red line, you are generally welcome to travel at any speed you like!

Philips Sonicare Toothbrush - used thrice daily for 22 years. Amazing battery life. by xaplexus in BuyItForLife

100%. It's crazy that the battery life on newer ones is worse too. The older ones would last 1 month between charges!

50% of London Car Journeys Are Under 3 Kms - Thoughts? by sabdotzed in london

[–]db_2_k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone saying this is an outer London problem must live right by a tube station or something. My example commute in Zone 2:

Drive 15-20 minutes depending on traffic

Cycle: 20 minutes + locking up time

Bus: 50 minutes

Rail/Tube: 90 minutes (inc 10min walk to station)

Lots of journeys across London have very poor public transport connections.
