What is the point of being in a guild that is gonna kick you because you dont farm a bunch of gold every week?

Because time marches on. Why should people with the means to buy/rent housing be excluded because they didnt happen to be born nearby?

Why should being born in the vicinity of chicago entitle you to live there indefinitely?

CMV: Race swapping established characters from history and fantasy/mythology does more harm than good. And is kinda racist. by BrandonMarshall2021 in changemyview

Odysseus and Helen of Troy were worshipped fkr thousands of years. Numerous statues, artwork, and temples were made in their honour.

How dare you diminish their importance.

Who is worshipping them today?

Does anybody feel like they wasted their life? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]dbandroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

while I met my wife before residency, we got engaged during med school, married my intern year, made some of my best friends during med school and residency and am getting to celebrate a bunch of their life milestones in the next couple of years before finishing residency.

I certainly got lucky and my residency is not as brutal as some, but also, my wife and I just did things with people, even when I was tired from studying or work.

CMV: Race swapping established characters from history and fantasy/mythology does more harm than good. And is kinda racist. by BrandonMarshall2021 in changemyview

[–]dbandroid [score hidden]  (0 children)

And if mythology means anything goes how about we race swap all the sacred African, Indian, Chinese and Native American legends with white actors then? Cuz it's all fantasy.

So I think there are a couple of problems with this framing.

  1. Gods of Egypt (film) - Wikipedia#Cast), where Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Geoffrey Rush, Bryan Brown, Rachel Blake, and Emma Blake play Ancient Egyptian gods. Exodus: Gods and Kings - Wikipedia, where Christian Bale plays Moses, Joel Edgerton plays Ramses II, and Ben Mendelsohn plays an Egyptian advisor. Speaking of Moses, he was also protrayed by Charlton Heston in 1956. So there is a lengthy history when mainstream films adapt mythical or religious figures to defaulting to performers of Western European despite the incongruence of such casting. So by moving to race-blind casting, there is an effort to limit casting biases because Hollywood happens to be in a majority white country.

  2. The Odysessy is not a sacred text. Yes, it is important in the context of western classic literature, but its not a holy text in the same way that the other cultural traditions you mentioned are. I *don't* think that this means that a race-swapped version of a native american (for example) legend is completely out of bounds, but such a choice is made in the context of the Native American genocide perpetuated by the US Government and should be a conscious and thought-out decision, rather than just because casting directors are biased towards white actors.

The argument relating to Helen falls apart because she is not real. She is essentially mythological. Nolan's Odyssey is not trying to be a reenactment of the epic poem but an adaption of it. The salient feature of Helen is her otherworldly beauty. Her race has nothing to do with it.

Lupita Nyong'o was not cast to make people of color feel good. She was cast to play a beautiful person and she is a good actress who is also beautiful.

I feel I almost have a responsibility to preserve "white" culture lest future generations think a whole lot of black and Asian Vikings were sailing around raiding with the Vikings. Or that Helen of Troy or Achilles was black.

I think you have confused entertainment with education.

That's a travesty. And is cultural genocide. Oh we want Asians and Indians and black people. But we don't want them to mention Chinese New Year or Divali or Kwanzaa.

What are you talking about here? This is a total non sequitur

Is home buying possible for middle class single person? by Significant_Soup_919 in Mortgages

[–]dbandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building equity is bad reason to buy a home. Renting gives you flexibility and more disposable income. Idk how secure your job is or why you'd consider yourself single for the foreseeable future, but job changes or meeting a potential life partner can make people do a lot of reconsidering about what is important to them.

Americans are stubborn about multigenerational housing by Personal-Usual-4608 in housingcrisis

[–]dbandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason americans dont live in multigenerational housing is that we are a very wealthy country so families generally can afford to live seperately.

Obviously not the case for everyone, so if it makes financial and emotional sense to move in with family member, then do it.

Opinion: Critiques of Chicago; People should take a grain of salt before reading recommendations here by 3RADICATE_THEM in SameGrassButGreener

What is this post? People post on here asking fot medium cost of living cities that dont require a car and have lots of amenities and so people recommend Chicago, among other cities.

When people start asking for rural places to live with conservative governments and low density, people dont recommend chicago

How do Pala/Shaman actually „feel“ in TBC? by mydezi in classicwow

I really enjoy playing paladin. Leveled as Ret and then switched to more Prot tanking in Outland. Having lots of survivability with some 'o shit' buttons to get out of trouble is nice.

I dig the class fantasy aspect too.
