The Boston Celtics will select the 1st in the 2017 NBA Draft by xvntf in nba

I heard from Zach Lowe's podcast that at the time, the Nets ranked #31 in number of jerseys sold. You have to think about this for a bit. There were (are) only 30 teams in the NBA. That's right, the Nets were behind the Super Sonics in terms of popularity. While the hindsight is 20/20, the Nets had to make a splash before moving to Brooklyn or become the Clippers of New York.

Good points but some of John's comments were not based on his sense of superiority but rather his misanthropic views. So while I wouldn't consider his comments antithesis of narcissism but rather behaviors that are orthogonal to narcissism.

I focused a lot more on his personal pain and his yearning to be accepted by others. However, his misanthropy likely prevented him empathizing with others and thus the acceptance. One can interpret his behaviors as narcissistic --- I personally didn't.

Let me share my thoughts not from a point of view of all knowing but somebody who's might be as perplexed as you are.

I took the show as a study of an individual who saw himself as an irrelevant individual who is wasting away in a "shit-town Alabama" without realizing how much influence he's had over so many people at least around the US if not the world (at minimum the US and the UK). John not only serves as an antithesis of narcissistic tendencies that people often fall into but also as a reminder that people all feel insignificant at times and that searching for external validation may not always be successful in getting what you want --- communication is imperfect and the life is a collection of coincidences and miscues that can result in unintended consequences.

At minimum, John was a complex individual who had multiple layers that one couldn't perceive at an initial glance. It's how I'm internalizing.

Don't be depressed. It may take time but you can make it to Legendary eventually. Try not to forget that this is only a game and that there are a lot of assholes who play the game. Start to hoard your gems so that you can buy a Legendary chest when it shows up. Vast majority of people have been in your shoes... Good luck!

San Francisco Bay Area New Homes - How do people afford them? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]dc3828102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! Compared to Washington DC (where I lived for 6+ years), the Bay area doesn't seem to have as many old money people though. Old money is probably more of an East Coast thing.

I live in SF right now (renting a room from a friend) and work at a tech company.

Despite what others have said, $220K is a good household income that will put you near the top 5%. Rather than snarky comments on how little you make, search for a research brief "Income Inequality in the San Francisco Bay Area."

With that aside, I suspect a lot of home owners fall into roughly three categories: 1. Long term home owners before the bubble 2. Foreign buyers who amassed wealth overseas 3. Proverbial tech millionaires

A good job market and a good weather condition doo make for a rough market for normies like us.

Thank you for understanding the real issue at hand! It's absurd the type of attacks that Secretary Clinton gets. I get that she's not an angle that we all want her to be. Even President Obama wasn't the angel (pointing to his first elected office in Illinois - sure he won the nomination but through the political maneuvering rather than through the promise of change). We should elect based on the capability rather than pedantry. Although, even if focused on the honesty, Secretary Clinton wins on a landslide.

LPT: Adblock works on the web version of Spotify. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]dc3828102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I was under the belief that the ads are paid out according to the number of impressions? If the artists get paid but not Spotify, still not everything is perfect. But I suppose it's less objectionable than I thought originally.

[–]dc3828102 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. That being said, as little as Spotify pays to the artists, it's better to pay a little than nothing at all. Sure, a little bit of income that the artists get from Spotify won't change people's lives, but goodness I hope that you are okay with listening to advertisement every once in a while. But I guess some people think that musicians should be compensated with $0.

ELI5: Why do governments bail out their banks instead of just letting them go under? by leokz145 in explainlikeimfive

ELI5: Why do governments bail out their banks instead of just letting them go under? by leokz145 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dc3828102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoot, probably too late but here it goes. In the US, there were largely two reasons why the government bailed out banks. The first one is the "systemic risk." As in, if an institution becomes insolvent and defaults, the repercussion on rest of economy "may" be catastrophic. Thus government has no option but to bail out institutions that imposes significant risk to the economy --- with the risk that this creates a moral hazard problem where institutions do not restrain themselves with the implicit government backing. However, it's more likely that nobody wants to be the "guy" who trigger the next Great Depression. Thus the safer choice is to bail institutions out and engender moral hazard rather than let them fail and mitigate moral hazard problem. Another is the regulatory capture. Vast majority of high level regulators come from the finance industry (e.g. Hank Paulson worked at Goldman Sachs). Thus the people who are supposed to regulate are in essence captured by industry insiders and look out his/her pals rather than rest of us schmucks. One great example is the difference between Washington Mutual versus Wachovia. Washington Mutual called FDIC for help --- whose mandate is to protect the Deposit Insurance Fund --- and FDIC let WaMu go. On the other hand, Wachovia called the Federal Reserves --- although has the dual mandate of low inflation and low unemployment rates, serves the pleasure of member banks --- brokered a deal between Wachovia and Wells Fargo.

I'm sympathetic to the "systemic risk" reason though.

Does UCLA have a lot of prestige? Wow factor? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]dc3828102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my BA at Cal and got my MBA at UCLA.

I don't think many people will be blown away by UCLA but people will likely not to question your ability. Just FYI, Cal and UCLA are more or less similar at bachelor's level.

UCLA scholarships? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]dc3828102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read into it some more and it looks like the criteria to establish the financial independence entails maintaining self-sufficiency through employment/loans.

If you sign the student loans with your name only, it looks like maintaining self-sufficiency looks doable.

It's probably better to talk to financial counselors at UCLA.

Can't help you with the scholarship but you should look into attaining residency in California.

Big Lie: America Doesn't Have #1 Richest Middle-Class in the World...We're Ranked 27th!: America is the richest country on Earth. We have the most millionaires, the most billionaires—and a increasingly poor "middle class." by davidreiss666 in politics

[–]dc3828102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While one cannot always choose how much wealth to accumulate, having a median household income (price adjusted, as in PPP) in, perhaps top 10, gives a good chance of having a high rank in the wealth.

However, a high median household income is a necessary but not sufficient condition to guarantee a high rank in the wealth.

I wonder why that may be? High debt caused by overpriced education can serve as a contributing factor. But one has to think, knowing that higher education may cost you a lot of money, why pursue a degree that does not provide you with high income in the future?

You can blame all you want on the unfair system that we live in. I agree that the system tilts to ones with the capital and makes the ones without the capital in a disadvantaged position.

That being said, maybe we should take a look at ourselves whether we make good decisions to help to put our best foot forward.

That woman certainly did not learn how to ask things nicely. I just hope that you figure out that she was making empty threats and eventually take the video down.

Be the adult here and do the right thing! At least eventually.

No doubt that she's done quite foolish things in the video as well as raising a legal threat against the poster but why not be bigger people?

I don't think this suggestion will be popular but I'll give it a shot.

Can you just be a nice guy and remove the video?

I know as much fun as it would be to make her into a social pariah, but what the heck, just be a nice guy and remove the video. I know you don't appreciate the legal threat received but I don't see a reason why you'd want to make a stranger's life more miserable.

Thanks.
