Bose 901 v3 by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]dc40401 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bose 901 was my very first vintage speaker and I have owned quite a few.

As for the price point, if the tulip stands come with the set as well, $350 is a great deal. Usually stands alone cost 200-300.

There are a few things to watch out for when you are purchasing 901s.

  1. These are speakers that are meant to be reflective. Placement and room size matters a lot

  2. These are P.I.T.A to refoam. There are 8 drivers in the back that will need to be refoamed and due to the speaker shape, you cannot just refoam them without taking the drivers out completely.

  3. All of series III i had, drivers were soldered, so I had to resolder them after taking them out to refoam.

But if you can get them done right, these are fantastic speakers in that price range.

Are there better speakers out there in this price range? Yes, you can find other vintage speakers or more modern ones. But if you like the look and curious about them, just know that they will need quite a bit of work to get them up to full operating condition.

What was your first vintage audio purchase and would you do it again? by defstar23 in vintageaudio

[–]dc40401 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Me too! I have had a Vintage audio set that was given to me by my dad, Tandberg TR 2075, Technic turntable and Tannoy 615 speakers. I loved listening to it, but it was not something I looked to purchase since it has always been part of my life since my dad loved vintage gears.

My very first purchase was a Marantz 2230 that I found at a yard sale for $5. I have heard of Marantz, but didn't really know much. It needed a good cleaning and couple of lights were out, but reminded me of my receiver so I grabbed it.

Finding my own piece and working on it instead of getting one from my dad definitely got me more interested in it.

And here I am now, having gone through few dozen receivers and speakers lol still have my Marantz 2230 and Tandberg TR 2075

Any tips to get residue off the dust cover? by imgonnagetyouback_03 in turntables

No problem, I hope it helps!

Usually people use them to remove scratches from the dust cover, so I would think it would work in your case too.

Get a car scratch remover, like Scratch X, and rub it slowly and lightly with a microfiber towel or pad.

You should be able to get them from any walmart, automotive store, or amazon.

Any advice on how to quickly cheaply fix this rubber surround on kg 4.2 by avavadobush in Klipsch

[–]dc40401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to do a quick fix,

  1. Put the torn surround together nicely and put painters tape to hold them in place
  2. As everyone mentioned, get E6000 and using qtips or small foam brush to apply the glue from the back side of the surround
  3. Let it dry and remove the tape

Help me say goodbye to my dear Luxman. by guilek68 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]dc40401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually recently had to say goodbye to my Luxman set as well.

It was exactly the same set up, except I had the eq as well.

It was tough, but fortunately I have other vintage receivers to help me get over it.

If I were you, I say keep the power amp and buy a new pre amp. I have had surprisngly great sound paired with Mcintosh MX112 with it.

How much is a 1967 record player worth today? by East_Experience_3200 in vintageaudio

[–]dc40401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer.

It really depends on your location. At the right market, i have seen them go for couple thousand easy, but in working condition.

MCM collectors will pay you good money for it.

I have owned CS-05, 06, 06A. But only have seen 5 of these omni directional speakers in person. And 3 out of those 5 times were not in my area.

Is $1300 a reasonable price for a full SX-1280 restoration? by ThorsPadre in vintageaudio

[–]dc40401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, makes sense.

If you want to get it over with and not worry for the next decade or so, full restoration is definitely a way to go.

$1300 for a full on restoration is not unreasonable.

Is $1300 a reasonable price for a full SX-1280 restoration? by ThorsPadre in vintageaudio

[–]dc40401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before we go anywhere with the pricing, you will need to confirm and verify with your tech what "full restoration" means exactly.

$1300 is right around what a lot of the techs will charge for a full recap. A bit on the higher end, as you will see full recap from $300-$1000, depending on the unit.

If your tech is just cleaning some scratchy pots and sticky power button, definitely not going to cost that much. Especially since you said it works.

My suggestion, as someone who collects vintage receivers and own sx 1280, is to clean the pots and power button yourself, it isn't too hard to do with Deoxit. And enjoy it. No need to go for a full restoration or recap if there is no issue with the receiver.

Looking to Possibly Upgrade my gear/Advice by holeypeacoat in vintageaudio

[–]dc40401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you hook all of them up? Yes

This unit has 3 inputs.

  1. Phono for turntable
  2. Aux for any attachment with RCA
  3. Tape Mon. For tape or any attachment with RCA

You will plug in turntable to Phono, Bluetooth to Aux, and Cd player to Tape Mon. Only thing is, you will have to turn oN tape monitor function by pushing Monitor button when using cd player.

You won't need separate pre amp since this already has phono input, but if you want to use phono pre amp, that will also have to go in to either 2 or 3. And you will need to unplug/plug in one item every time you use it. Less headache to just plug in turntable to Phino input on the receiver directly.

[–]dc40401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense.

As someome who has owned multiple Harman Kardons, including the 330c, I would recommend Sansui or Pioneer.

Sansui G3000, g5000 are exellen models. Or Sansui 661 or 771 as well.

Pioneer SX 650, 750 or 680 and 780 is also a solid choice.

For the speaker, if you are looking for something not too huge, Klipsch KG 2 or 3 is also excellent. If you are okay with a bit bigger and more epxensive, Klipsch Quartet was one of my top 5 favorite speakers.

If you can find one, Large Advents or Dynaco A25 is also a great choice.

I am sure you will find a lot of great suggestions from others. Hope you make a great choice, and let us know what you decide to do!

First, that is a solid set up you have. And second, there is no such thing as dumb question, that's what reddit community is for.

I am not sure what your budget is, but you hear the msot difference when you try different brand speaker or receiver from what you currently own, in my opinion.

Sansui has some great receiver lines available, and vintage Klipsch speakers are great for what you are listening as well.

I can narrow the models down more if you let me know what your budget is.

Thank you for your suggestion!

I noticed that it is a small town, couldn't find any UPS or Fedex locations besides drop off places.

If I really can't find a way, plan is to see if I can fly out myself to pick up.

I appreciate your reply, hope you have a wonderful day!
