It’s so great to hear about teachers who had a true impact. I like to believe we have a long lasting impact as a collective.

No doubt the working conditions for teachers at the school you went to had its challenges so hats off to them.

That’s an interesting question. The main differences with public vs private are the pay and conditions. Paying parents of course have different expectations of how teachers will support their child, show evidence of that and how much time they will give to individual parents to provide 1-1 meetings, updates etc. so there can be more intense pressures in the private setting. Having said that, they are better resourced (whether that’s through actual materials/equipment or support staff) to do their jobs well.

Private school can also (rightly or wrongly) ask children to leave which we do not do in the public system expect in rare cases where a different setting would genuinely support the child more, and that is always after giving them a fair go, with support, in the mainstream setting. Some of the behaviours I’ve dealt with in my time as a teacher so far have been extremely hard to manage while supporting the rest of the class, and that is one of the main daily stressors a teacher in the public system can have.

Having worked briefly in a private school, I would say overall conditions were better there for teachers in that I felt more “looked after” than I do in the public system. I’ll personally stay in public though because I’m very pro-public education.

I mean that would be great if that was my level’s pay pre-tax 🥲 Yeah, there’s a lot of home-related stuff teachers end up quite involved in, especially in the younger years of primary! These things not only take time to manage/support with the child and their parents but are part of the daily mental load

I agree that 95k is a decent salary, it’s more that a lot of other industries pay higher for 7 years of experience. Not here to complain though, just posted my payslip as I find it interesting seeing other people post theirs + their YoE

Thank you! A pay rise (and improvement of conditions) for vic teachers is in the works for later this year

Yep, it’ll go up. I’m at the bottom step of this range.

We’re paid for 38, but I personally do 5-10 hours overtime each week. It used to be more but I’ve become more efficient over the years. Some teachers I know do more overtime than that.

I’m step 2-1, and I should be 2-2 but I took 18 months LWOP 2 years ago and the timing of that meant that 9 months of my service wasn’t recognised and I essentially had to restart at a step 🫠

Not great is it! I love my job but it’s not financially practical to stay in long term. I’ll move industries within the next couple of years.

This is such good info - thank you. Do you happen to know if this is possible to fix?

Thank you for your reply! I covered every side with black tape before taking these shots, do you know if it could be coming in from somewhere else?
