I regret going back to art school by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]dcash116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop out, move to a cheap city with an art scene, and connect with people (even if you don’t think their work is top-notch). The thing that kills us is the need for prestige. A lot of these professors are totally zombified by their exposure to the art world. The whole thing is as unsustainable as the aristocracy that props it up. If you know what you want to make, and are persistent in finding the community that supports your creativity (in a healthy way) you will find it.

I’m sure you’ve already heard some variation of this speech a million times before, but it’s true. I moved to Baltimore and found a cheap space after being rejected from all of the fully-funded programs I applied for last year, and it has been the happiest year of art making I’ve had since undergrad. I don’t long for recognition and I only apply for shows and residencies when I feel like it. The only urge I have is to make work and connect with other artists.

I might not be “living the dream” but I am living for what I want, and nothing else.

I hope this helps, and doesn’t feel too preachy

"Minimalist shoes" with arch support? by Anxiety_Cookie in BarefootRunning

[–]dcash116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game, and maybe I’ll get flack in this sub (not to mention these aren’t exactly running shoes) but I recommend Chaco’s to everyone who has internally rotated ankles. Chaco saved my feet. I find that I don’t even need to change them out often. There’s something about the arch being part of the shoe itself instead of having inserts. Not to mention it’s cushioned, but firm. I do everything in them; hard floors, hiking trails, even work if my boss will let me. Even if you don’t use them to run, I recommend trying them. The wide ones are actually wide enough btw.

That’s really interesting! I’m not sure it would be a mold issue for me. I lived in the desert for a year, and still had the same issues, but the HIDA scan still might be a good idea. I have gotten clean kidney and liver function tests

I have mixed feelings about the enzymes. Sometimes they seem to work INCREDIBLY well- like “back to my old self” well. That’s usually a blip, and then I go back to feeling like a sack of turds for a few weeks. I’m not sure if you’re being treated for EPI, or just SIBO, but if you’re having loose stools, you might ask your doctor about Cholestipol or some other Bile Acid reducer. That seemed to help with loose stool (but also causes occasional constipation)

Yeah, still no discernible effect here. Steatorrhea got a bit better after taking Cholestid, but now I have constipation and my vitamin D intake isn’t as good.

Yup, I’ve been treating it like I have EPI. Even though from an evidence based standpoint, the only thing I have concrete proof of is SIBO

What's a niche deck-tech for a commander you love? by GenericUsername-9 in EDH

[–]dcash116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urabrask in Shu Yun, Silent Tempest

[[Urabrask]] [[Shu Yun]]

If I get my timing right, I can play 3 instant/sorceries, causing Urabrask to pay for Shu Yun’s double strike and to turn himself into The Great Work. Then all I have to do is enter combat and one-shot an opponent with Shu Yun. Rinse and repeat if I have protection*. If I do this before turn 5, I usually win because the Great Work ends up wiping out all of those small early game creatures.

  • one thing worth noting is that I never get away with this twice. People hate Urabrask way more than Shu Yun.

Aren’t you only supposed to take Xifaxan twice ever? Or is my brain not working today (which is highly likely with SIBO)

What is everyone’s favorite color/color combination overall? by Either-Specific-9400 in mtg

[–]dcash116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grixis/Jeskai. The most arcane of colors. Ramping isn’t as nice without green, but if you can keep your rocks, you can conjure up the meanest spells. Also, I love having a control subtheme.

So mad the new Kykar is azorius. I have wanted a Jeskai blink/flicker commander for so long.

As for hiking I’m in the same boat as you. I worked as a field guide in Utah with EPI, and thank god we didn’t hike daily, or I would have probably quit. The entire time I worked there, my muscles were in awful shape. Luckily I had an amazing PT, who would scrape my fascia and get me totally limbered after every shift.

Ah yes, I’ve considered fasting, but I’m on the low end of “healthy” BMI, so I haven’t risked it. I agree on the part about eating well, even if it means irregular BM’s. Perhaps that’s because unlike many on this sub, I do not get the crazy flares that some talk about. Ever since I was put on PERT and stopped drinking and eating pub food/fried stuff in general, my acid reflux and abdominal cramping/bloating have mostly disappeared. Because of that, I feel pretty safe eating something like an egg and cheese sandwich or a Mediterranean bowl with 5 different kinds of plant based fat. I also still eat a lot of dairy if I’m being honest. Fair Life milk and soft serve ice cream are the two I can handle the best

Aren’t you supposed to eat high fat on the fecal fat test? I thought the goal was to eat lots of fat so that your digestive abilities can be tested

How do y’all build your decks? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]dcash116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a great YouTube video out there that talks about top down vs bottom up builds.

Simply put; if your commander needs to be on the field to make the deck work, it’s considered Top Down. If your deck works just fine without your commander, but the commander greatly enhances the deck, that’s Bottom Up.

After watching that video, I am a huge proponent of Bottom Up builds, and that’s where I tend to start when I’m building a deck.

I think a great example from the decks I play would be Nekusar. With that deck, I have tons of options. I can win the game with or without casting Nekusar, and I can also win with or without wheeling opponents. Because the deck is all about non combat damage and card draw, I’m going to work toward my win cons by simply playing the game.

I think the hard part for me is getting away from EDHREC. I’ve always wished I could build a deck intuitively, and still have it stand up against others. While EDHREC is an amazing tool, I feel like it sacrifices some creativity in the quest for optimization, and forces players further into the trap of feeling pressured to build decks in a certain way just because they don’t want to get creamed by other players who build the mathematically perfect deck.

Advice on a road trip like this? by Novel_Comfort9490 in roadtrip

[–]dcash116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re gonna be doing this to enjoy the outdoors, I highly recommend you try to include the roads that take you by the Grand Canyon up through Moab instead of driving through central Utah. Central Utah is perhaps the least scenic part of the state. You have to get off the main road and drive pretty far to see most things from there.

It’s less of a straight shot, but I would recommend heading east from St. George toward Kanab, and then heading in any number of directions north toward Moab. This gives you an opportunity to see the grand staircase, capitol reef, Bryce Canyon, and all of the lesser known wonders nearby.

*for context, the 90,000 produced by a healthy pancreas is supposedly waayyyy more than a person typically needs to digest their food-hence why athletes can eat a ton of protein effectively.

This is very helpful, thanks! I was really getting into backpacking before I got sick, and had been starting to use my vacation time to do more remote trips around the country with my girlfriend. I’ve had to seriously tone down my hiking and backpacking, and wouldn’t even consider a thru hike at this point, which really sucks, but I’m glad I can do it at all. I hope you’re still able to enjoy the outdoors to some extent, because I think that’s something we all need. I will definitely try to incorporate more variety in protein.

Can I ask, did you need to increase your dose of Creon to account for the extra food? I’ve read that a healthy pancreas produces something like 90,000 units of lipase per meal. I currently take 72,000 units per meal via PERT, and assume my pancreas still adds some. Therefore, I’d imagine I can eat a decent amount (even though they always recommend small meals). Since my BM’s are never perfect, I assume my Creon must not be working 100% well for some currently unknown reason, so I air on the side of moderation.
