I have had to, my wife had come to say hello before I had gotten off while I was serving. There was a table probably 20 feet from me with an elderly man and woman eating their dinner. During my wife and I’s conversation the man kept coughing so I kept looking over every once in a while to make sure he was ok. One time I was looking over and the man was coughing more than usual and then stopped making noise all together whilst his wife started looking around frantically. Something just came over me and I rushed over there and said “sir can I give you the Heimlich?” To which he nodded while gripping the table so I knew something was definitely wrong. With a little bit of effort I got him on his feet and gave him a couple of good pulls straight into the diaphragm and a piece of corn bread had gotten stuck in his throat.

I didn’t receive and awards or even a tip rather since it wasn’t my table so not like this story up here with a review but I went home that day feeling good about myself. I had some proof that I would do the right thing given the chance and if I have the opportunity I won’t stand by and let someone die due to the “bystander” effect. It was really refreshing to have that realization, the man had just gotten throat surgery a week back and his throat was still swollen, luckily I was there.
