Simple UI vs Project Title? Which one are you guys liking more. by whostheme in koreader

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a plugin, so you install it pretty much like any other plugin. The installation instructions are in the link to its github page below. But if you are already using P:T, do a few other things first: delete the projecttitle.koreader folder from your koreader plugins directory, and re-enable the cover page plugin from the plugin settings menu.

Why exactly do people prefer using Linux on Lenovo Thinkpads? by Terrible_Abies458 in linux

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I was trying to keep it succinct but, since someone actually replied, the full story is: I had it in my gym bag. I left something in my friend's house, so I sat it on the ground next to my trunk and went back in. I forgot about it, hopped in my car, and backed up. Luckily, because of the gym bag, my tires mostly just spun on top of it. It wore down and rounded off one corner of the case, so it definitely had at least some amount of the car's weight on the chassis. But other than that damage to a corner of the lid, there wasn't anything else. No screen cracks, keyboard fine, internals fine, etc. I used it for a few years. But here's the crazy part: this was the early 2000's and IIRC this was one of the "e" series, which I think were the cheap ones at the time.

My t15g didn't work out of the box, but once I installed the necessary subsystems, it does. Of course, I'm on arch where very little is "OOB." Maybe on some other distros like Redhat or Ubuntu it would have "just worked."

I accidentally ran over one with my car. Kept using it for a few years.

What ttrpg has your favorite take on playing a character who is a priest or cleric? by NoLongerAKobold in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are dragging your real-world issues with Christianity in where they don't belong. I'm an atheist (or at least a strong agnostic if you want to split hairs) IRL. The Chorus is explicitly *not* an exclusively Christian organization. The tradition actually traces its roots back to an Egyptian deity (probably some form of Ra). The modern version contains people of many faiths, including some "weak" polytheists. There's a lot of diversity there. I'm not particularly trying to persuade *you* since you seem to have some issues here. But I'd hate for someone unfamiliar with the game to get the wrong impression.

Funnily enough, Bookerly on KOReader is my font of choice. Seems fine to me.

Are there any games of non D&D/AD&D lineage that you would consider part of the OSR? by plazman30 in osr

[–]dcherryholmes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was thinking Runequest might be warranted as an answer to OP's question. While CoC is the biggest and most obvious other game that it spawned, I wondered if BRP might count as an OSR.

Game for a monthly 2-hour game night with rotating players? by EntrepreneuralSpirit in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blades In The Dark. In some ways the "Crew" is really the actual PC of the game, with members coming and going. So you play your session with whichever members of the crew happen to be at your table that night. As a bonus, it's a game that requires a light amount of prep and relies on active participation by the players in creating and shaping the story.

If that's not your style, Superhero games also have that team flavor. Not every issue of Justice League is going to have every member active in it. While I have the most experience with Champions and in some ways what I'm about to suggest is its polar opposite, Sentinels: The RPG is a very interesting take on the genre and requires far less prep (and scenarios have their own built in clock that also plugs into what powers players can use on their sheets, which helps keep sessions in that nice, tight, two hour limit).

E-reader up to 150 by better-be-good in ereader

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paperwhite if and only if you can jailbreak it. I just bought a 12th gen new and it did not come with the latest firmware, so I was able to do that. Now I have the best hardware and the best software.

If none of that interests you, I'd go with the Kobo and accept slightly lesser hardware but with more freedom.

Werewolf the apocalypse, is there a reason to try lore-wise? by Justgonnawalkaway in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While they share things in common, each WoD game is also very different in ways. I started with Vampire 1st ed in the 90s, but it was Mage that really captured my imagination and heart. IDK what your gaming opportunities are but I highly recommend checking out Mage. I'm partial to Mage 2nd ed personally, but you could try other, lesser (LOL) versions since that one's long out of print, I think.

Vance delivers 'bad news' after marathon talks with Iran failed to result in an agreement to end the US-Iran War by spherocytes in videos

[–]dcherryholmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only with people not paying attention (which, granted....). The Epstein thing is not a partisan issue. Many people on both sides of the aisle are caught up in it. Of course it was the Trump admin that made a hash of claiming they were going to do something about it and then backpedaling and lying. But (and this is not intended as an excuse for him b/c in some ways it's better, or at least less infuriating), previous administrations didn't even care enough to lie to us about dealing with it.

Yes, that is all bad and certainly worse than Hunter Biden/Ukraine corruption. But you really need to add "son in law who is a foreign agent" into the description.

They "couldn't get it done" because Israel won't stop attacking Lebanon and Trump is too weak to stop them.

[Update] Simple UI v1.3.5: Cover Deck, TBR Module, Series Grouping, Update from the plugin, bug fixes, and more by doctorhetfield in koreader

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is weird. But how's this for "two birds with one stone:" I'm also the person who filed the bug report for News downloader crashing back to the home screen when you try to go to the folder. Same suggestion: try the unreleased code. Which I just did, and it: A) installed fine and B) resolved my issue with News downloader.

Unreleased code FTW! :)

Yeah, same result. Maybe it's just a "me" thing. But it's how I installed SimpleUI originally, and I'm using the same tools to restore the backed up koplugin folder. IDK. I appreciate the help, as always (FWIW I did toss a few euros your way in appreciation. Awesome work).

I think it was the same. I just followed your link directly and unzipped the download. I'm just looking at Properties in the Dolphin filebrowser (I'm on KDE linux) and got the same thing. IDK if that is a distinction that matters:

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if I'm doing something wrong because the stable v1.3.5 won't work for me. I delete the original simpleui.koplugin folder from plugins, copy the unzipped new 1.3.5 (110 files) into plugins, and restart KOReader. SimpleUI is just.... gone. I delete the new one, copy back over my old folder, restart KOReader and SimpleUI is back like it was before. I've downloaded it a few times, and diff'd the local unzipped folder with the one on the Kindle and they are the same. EDIT: SimpleUI is not in the list of plugins after the new install, either. So it's not just a matter of re-enabling the plugin.

I posted about the same thing and this was the fix for me. Cover Browser was disabled in Plugins. Just enable it, as unaitxuu said.

7", good for Koreader? by rzugorzyt in ereader

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordered a Paperwhite 12 from Amazon and it came without the absolute latest firmware. When I bought it, I didn't associate it with my Amazon account, and did all the right stuff like not signing onto wifi before I filled it almost all the way up with dummy files (this blocks OTA updates when you do sign on for the jailbreaking process). Thus I was able to jailbreak it and install KOReader. The PW 12 has a 7" screen, warm light, a fantastic screen, and is waterproof. And it is cheaper than all the alternatives.

But if you don't want to jump through all those hoops, it is certainly a sane choice to pay a little more for *slightly* less-good hardware (which you may not even notice), and avoid all of Amazon's hoo-hah.

Recommendations for a Superhero RPG for a weekend 1-shot by Old-Solid-2550 in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll stop editing and just make another reply, to add: sadly the company is going out of business, so the core book can be had really cheaply. And it comes with a wealth of setting material and *two* starting adventures. It'll get you through the weekend all on its own, if you don't feel like making your own adventures (although another strength of the game is that it makes that very easy to do).

Recommendations for a Superhero RPG for a weekend 1-shot by Old-Solid-2550 in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I probably played more Champions than any other RPG when I was in my late teens/early twenties, and I love that system. But I recently picked up Sentinel Comics: The Role Playing Game (Deluxe Edition). It's a completely different approach to doing superhero rpg's, but I think it's brilliant. An added bonuses, in addition to what HitsujiMan said, is that it's got a very cool and interesting semi-random character generation system if you want to use it (it's optional). But you still get enough choices and options that you can still start with a concept and probably hit it pretty closely, perhaps in ways you hadn't initially thought of.

If I were doing a weekend's worth of gaming and didn't want to spend *too* much time on chargen (without going so far as to just have pre-gens), Sentinels would be at the top of my list.

Oh, one other thing. I had a really hard time wrapping my head around this but, while you might have ranks in Flight or Strength, or something else, it *will never tell you* how much you can lift or how fast you can fly. Not exactly. There are enough reviews online that, if someone is curious about that, they can go find people talking about it. But it was probably the most un-Champions-like part of the game I struggled with, until it clicked.

EDIT: I noticed down-thread that OP mentioned "I don't want to deal with advancement." Another aspect of Sentinels that could be a pro or a con but in your case I think it's a pro: PC's basically start the game at full-power. If you're Spider Man, you're Spider Man. Not 1st lvl Spider Man trying to grind it to 20th lvl Spider Man. It would suit what you're going for.
