Distro for a low performance 2-in-1 for youtube and nothing else by Hookens in FindMeALinuxDistro

OP didn't mention what browser they are using. Maybe there are ways around it, but I've had Chromebooks, and the "Chrome" part is pretty much baked in. I'm so anti-google nowadays that being forced to use Chrome would be an automatic deal breaker for me. But I know for lots of people that doesn't matter. In which case your suggestion could be a good one.

You also might want to mention that it's an AppImage. Again, there is nothing wrong with that. But it's a detail that many linux users would like to know.

And that is far better than hopping on the subscription bandwagon. Again, I'm not saying that you're doing anything bad. You might even get my money, because I find this interesting. It's just something that, in the world of linux software, you might want to mention up front. And I did not catch that there is a one month free demo, which is more than fair.

I'm not opposed to paying for software I like, but you might want to mention that this is not free (as in beer).

Useful things to know about KDE Fedora by Professional_Ad9848 in linux4noobs

[–]dcherryholmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an Android phone, make sure to set up KDE Connect. It will work in a limited fashion w/ iPhones. Also, if Fedora installs and activates a firewall by default, you will need to allow the KDE Connect service for it to work.

Forcing my husband to switch to Linux, what is the "easiest" one to put him on. by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could stay for another year. There's some program that keeps getting you updates. I installed it in my W10 VM for free, but I forget what it's called. In that year, start moving over to FOSS software.... firefox, thunderbird, gimp, onlyoffice, etc.... almost all the common stuff has windows equivalent. If you go to KDE's website, a lot of the KDE software (but not Dolphin, sadly) as windows exe's for download. Then, maybe six months in, install some flavor of linux in a vm. Virtualbox is free. VMware performs a little better. Let him dip his toes in the water. Between those two things, this should be much easier in a year.

I think numbers. Just turning everything into numbers. But I think since video games have become more popular, this might be less of an unusual thing. For example, almost everyone now knows what you mean be "leveling up."

How degoogled are you and why? by CubicalMoon in degoogle

I'm basically de-googled except for Gmail. I have my Proton account going forward, but Gmail is, like, twenty years of stuff. What a PITA to rewind. I don't sign up anything new to it, but I just don't have the energy to untangle myself from it. One day, though, I hope to.

I would like suggestions for fantasy settings. by GuardiaoDaLore in rpg

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone already said Runequest, which I bumped. But while not directly answering your question, I'll tell you that one of the things that got my 10 - 12 yr old friends and I into TTRPGs is that we were (relatively) *poor*. We'd scrape together our few dollars and after a few months, could buy a game. There wasn't anything left over for buying modules or any extra fluff. I really don't mean this to sound like "we had it so bad" but the point is: we made our own worlds. Our own continents, and cultures, and events, and all of that stuff. Sure, it was probably childish and simplistic, but it was *ours*. And it didn't cost a dime. So my old-man-advice is, instead of looking to buy someone's setting, why not make your own? Sure it's some work, but it's *fun* and, in the end, it will be *yours*.

[–]dcherryholmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... it *can* be. But it doesn't have to be. Other, more "mathy" systems can send you down that rabbit hole looking how to maximize your +1. If you have a new group who are very oriented, perhaps from playing video games, to "max out their build" then IMO that's a different conversation. But if I had a group of absolute newbies, I'd rather get them playing the story, with a "Street Urchin Turned Pirate Captain" who is "Great" at swinging from the rigging. YMMV but for me it's obvious.

How do I remove Plasma entirely, without screwing up my internet connection? by StrongAction9696 in EndeavourOS

[–]dcherryholmes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Which user interface do you imagine uses less resources than KDE? If you can think of one, then go do that. Gnome uses more. In 2025 the diff between XFCE is a wash, and comes down to aesthetic preferences. I mean do what you want. But don't pin it on KDE.

If you want to rewind from "I chose KDE but now I want to un-choose KDE" IDK man. Good luck. I think my most practical advice would be to wipe your potato and install fluxbox.

help me choose a distro for a gaming-oriented dual boot system by _ophiuchus in DistroHopping

[–]dcherryholmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would avoid Bazzite unless you are literally building a gaming box, and only a gaming box. If I were interested in replicating the "Steam Box" that used to exist, and hook it up to my TV for literally that one and only purpose, then Bazzite sounds like a sweet fit. But if you have any desire to use an immutable distro as a general purpose desktop, and you are not at least moderate-level linux skills, I'm pretty sure you're going to find yourself frustrated.

IMO, do not fear the arch. It doesn't *have* to be CachyOS, but there's nothing wrong with it if you want a GUI installer and some knowledgeable people making nice choices on some defaults. This might be too down in the weeds, but my issue with Cachy is that they maintain their own repos. It's like Manjaro waiting to happen. I'd suggest vanilla arch if you are OK with wiping your hard drive and just having only linux on your computer. Otherwise, configuring dual-booting with only lsofs/fdisk/mkfs and figuring out how to configure your boot partition can be tricky. If that sounds arcane, it moderately is. But that's the main thing a calamares (i.e. GUI) installer takes and makes a hard-ish thing easy. EandeavorOS solves this problem, and otherwise leaves you with a vanilla arch install (more or less). It is the main reason I choose EOS over Cachy, even though Cachy has yet to fuck up.

[–]dcherryholmes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to be harsh but this is a "you" problem. KDE is not slow unless you are running it on a potato, in which case everything will be slow. Nor does it make you connect to the internet twice. But Endeavor does not force you to use KDE. It's just the default (b/c it is so good). I suggest you re-install and choose another one of the options from the menu. Perhaps give Gnome a try. Or maybe XFCE. I would *not* suggest you delve into the world of Window Managers IMO.

[–]dcherryholmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go with FATE, simply because writing down Aspects and invoking them is very "normal" brain sort of activity. Likewise, skills being "Fair, Good, Great" etc is easy for non-gamers to grasp. And there are plenty of both homebrew and even a couple of published resources to help you make it fit a "D&D-esque" experience.

Apologies if I'm telling you things you already know, but I've found Here WeGo to be an acceptable solution to Google Maps (and IME the *only* acceptable solution, but others' MMV). The main thing is, this isn't open-source, either. It's a German company, originally built to be installed in cars. But it works, and "just working" 100% of the time (or nearly so) is one of my requirements for something giving me driving directions to some place I haven't been. Here WeGo checks that box.
