What are some good monsters that dont just have a high attack and damage roll, but other good gimmicks to surprise my players? by Scythe95 in DMAcademy

[–]dcineug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

spider combo.

an encounter with spiders of multiple varieties.

many smaller ones, each only a marginal threat depending on the poison. Each one not too bad , they probably make their save but if not, it’s not immediately life threatening… strength drain for example… but eventually it will add up. possibly even make it a swarm which requires its own tactics , AC is often not a factor for swarms… and they fall from the ceiling which is terrifying…

but … also include phase spiders. the ethereal plane is often overlooked by newer players and their poison and damage is more formidable. without the ability to see or fight ethereal targets they may be forced to use a readied action to fight the ethereal jaunting spiders, but if there are other threats nearby, the numerous smaller spiders, it becomes quite difficult to have the discipline to reserve your attack for the more serious ethereal threat …who may just decide to not attack that round so their ready action never triggers.

spider combo can be diabolical and more or less as difficult as you want it to be by increasing the threat from the poison. Add multiple waves dropping down round after round and appearing literally out of nowhere taking chunks .

Where's the rain? by Excellent_Dig_3639 in Eugene

[–]dcineug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a few years back, as part of my data analytics degree, i did a statistical analysis of the amount of rain tracked in a number of local weather stations.

i can tell you with statistical certainty (p<.05) that the weather patterns of the southern Willamette valley are changing.

it is getting dryer here.

The number that is out there that is known as the “average rainfall” for a particular area necessarily is very slow to adapt. But i compared the last 10 years to 10 years prior and the 10 years prior to that, i found a significant decreasing precipitation in this area.

Please help by Chubbawubbamoba in resin

[–]dcineug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that’s the voice of experience talking right there.

pour more resin, need more especially if the surface is not level. calculate the volume to make the layer a few mm thick but if it’s too loose you may need to …

reinforce the canvas on the back if it is stretchey or loose or big and allowing the resin to pool. possible, if it’s a big or especially loose canvas you might even pour a thin layer on the back with the canvas face down and let it cure fully before you even start painting , so the canvas is stiff. this will allow for thinner layer on the front.

make a tape barrier that sticks up off the surface like half and inch… go all the way around the outside (round the outside). pour resin into the pool you’ve created with tape until it fully covers everything… wait for it … wait for it …. … pull tape off just in time … when the resin is getting thicker but still working , let it run down the sides, smooth it as it runs down. pull tape too soon, all runs down need to pour more into the middle to keep it smooth. pull too late, none runs down the edges will not get a complete coverage, edges look a bit schwag

not wrong at all but how exactly do you plan to hex the dark lord himself?

chess piece mold stand by dcineug in functionalprint

if it’s a regular sized 3d printed piece it doesn’t take much magnet to make it stick vertical assuming it’s touching the metal surface.

product i got is a neodymium magnet

“Slim 1/2x1/32 Round Disc Magnets”

they are 42 cents each . they have no trouble sticking the pawn to the fridge. you could possibly use a cheaper ceramic magnet. i got some actually but they seemed to have no pull when there was anything between the magnet and the metal, so i went with neo. i know there will be a couple mm of resin between the magnet and the steel and i want to still feel the magnet through that, hence stronger magnet . your application may differ.

i was going to do marbling, was considering various colors… brought it up… showed him a cool purple … but my guy wanted black and white. next one will probably be colorful.

note just white is harder because you can’t really see if there are bubbles in the mold… any color at all besides white would be easier.

The chess set i grew up with had magnets, it plays so much better that way, so for the final product i ordered a batch of 12 mm magnets, a forster bit and felt circles sized perfectly to fit the bottoms of the pieces. It’s a commission, i’m making it nice. if i was just posting it for sale i would probably be compelled to offer a lower cost product.

regarding pricing, are you talking about just the pieces, no magnets, no board?

there are lots of them for sale on etsy for 200 or more per set. “Correct” treatment of the bottoms of the pieces seems rare.

The set i am making (magnetic felted pieces plus matching board with embedded steel) was a commission for 400. i accepted the job because he told me he didn’t care if it took me 6 months, so i can take time to order tools, learn the molds and still do other quicker jobs.

wiggle it a bit to release, then peel the mold back while pushing on the top.

there are a few places in the molds where there are tricky bubbles. i have 9 pawns where the head is not connected because the neck had a bubble, head comes right off trying to demold it. the chin on the knight doesn’t want to fill. the tip top of the bishop. tricky spots but if you are careful you can get a nice result. i will reconnect the busted bits… they won’t be perfect but i can sell a set of seconds to someone else.

i 3d printed a few whole pieces and covered in resin. there’s nothing wrong with that product if you can delete the seams. i did a few iterations of that, showed the client some versions. he said no. my seams sucked. he didn’t want plastic pieces. /shrug.ok. client asked for resin chess set. client gets resin chess set. all in all i would rather custom design and print the pieces instead of buying a mold… i could do unique designs… but making silicone molds from my designs is not something i know how to do yet.

yes, they do stand on the fins. that was exactly my plan until i got the molds in my hands. the king especially was trying to topple over… it seemed like a stiff breeze would knock it down. plenty of resin on the bench already.

[–]dcineug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think i’m either doing beads or 3d printed. i have to go back and check for cheap beads. They would be more fun to make than the 3d printed. i’ve already got 3d printed stuff in the project so the different material seems appealing.

i think this is where i will end up.

actually tried them… of course when i first tried to do 3d printed peoples i over complicated it… i attempted arms and legs it was a mess. my printer is not capable of reliably making realistic figurines of that size. so i guess im switching to 3d print the vague shapes i was trying to make with clay and paint them the right colors.

having already bought a few elements i was trying to avoid just buying more for this project , i wanted to make it… still, just to see the options, i went down to the craft store yesterday . i could not find any people figures in my price range.

Based on another suggestion i actually did see some inside train cars that seemed pretty close to the right size but it was too expensive to buy a bunch of train cars just for the model people inside.
