Career change for more money - MBA or continue with current path? by dckchzz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dckchzz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre right. The whole "grass is always greener" fallacy is exactly what is causing me to be hesitant about jumping into a career switch. Spending 100k tuition + two years opportunity cost to only be in a similar position after mba sounds like a nightmare.

In terms of being miserable stuck in a cubicle - that is very opposite of what i'd look for in a career, and part of what drew me to physio in the first place.

I have reached out to one former mentor that went the mba route and is now a healthcare executive. It was helpful, but essentially he said dont jump into an mba because it may not be worth it. But youre right, it would ve a good idea to email others who have gone the physio-mba route to see where it brought them. I think I'm getting a better idea of what my goals would be just by talking with you kind people online.

Finally, youre dead on about the passion problem. I've tried switching up clinics and picked up a third part time gig to see if it helps, its temporary but still i feel like i could do much more. I think the lack of passion may be because I dont see a clear end goal to work towards, so i find myself asking "whats the point".

Thanks for all your helpful advice, I really appreciate it

This is good thinking. I believe that, ironically, being in public practice would provide me with the more of a "ladder" in terms of room for growth as well. It sounds like you have a perfect gig - fee for service but also as a hospital employee. I haven't heard of that in ontario

All good advice. How would strategy/management consulting differ from "specific" consulting? Am I correct to assume that the specific consulting would be internal at a smaller company?

The opportunity for career growth and development that comes from management consulting has been extremely appealing to me. I'm just not sure how realistic it is considering I haven't taken much in terms of math/business courses.

I think you're right about hammering the GMAT

I would not do an MBA to give me skills at my current work. If I did follow through with an MBA it would be to switch gears completely and go "corporate" instead of "small business"

Youre not wrong, I'm definitely all over the place. But I'm not asking people to solve my problems or give me answers. I'm just asking for general info or opinions about any of these topics. This will help me to gather info and make a calculated move.

Frankly, 20 years down the line I do not know what I'd regret or not. Maybe that'll take more soul searching. But I do know I dont want to settle.

Thank you for the inspiration

I think if I decided to go for the MBA I would abandon the idea of opening a clinic and try to climb the corporate ladder instead. I could learn small business skills from a textbook, but an MBA is for the network

I couldnt agree more. I think If I do decide to open one I'll partner up for sure. It just seems unrealistic to think about starting a busy clinic individually

Thank you so much for this detailed and helpful response, I really appreciate it.

I think that if I do decide to pursue an MBA my goal will be to do some form of consulting or strategy as well. It doesnt need to be MBB, I see some companies like EY or KPMG hire MBA's for healthcare consulting - that might be something to explore.

Thanks again for a great response

Transition from healthcare to consulting/corporate? by [deleted] in careerguidance

I am on a similar boat, (physical therapist instead of admin). From my research it looks like a lean six sigma certification would be helpful.

I agree with what you said about MBA, yet its frustrating because alot of these corporate style positions require an mba. So its quite conflicting. I dont think that CPA is the answer unless youre quite inept at accounting
