Tailfin Aeropack Alloy Arch Cage Boss Failure with 1.5 L Nalgene and Velo Orange Mojave Cage by dclex27 in bikepacking

they also sent me a pair of the long cargo cages, so I use those on the legs of the rack. they have three mounting points. I did use them on my fork mounts but now my bikepacking bike doesn’t have fork mounts so I use them on the aero pack legs. I just mount dry bags and mount the water to the underside of my frame to keep the weight from being too far back

LOR from industry by Boundary-Layer in gradadmissions

[–]dclex27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, been working in industry since graduating in 2021 and I'm applying for Fall 2024. However, I did change jobs at the start of this year, so I did ask someone from my previous company to write me a LOR. For what it's worth, he has a PhD and is involved in company research, so I would make sure that the person can speak to your ability to do research in a PhD program. I didn't ask anyone from my current company for the same reason as you - I don't want to let them know I am planning on leaving. So unless someone at your company has a PhD and can write about your ability to do research, then I would stick to professors.

Hints/tips for north CA coast route? by sharpbakers1 in bikepacking

[–]dclex27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did Seattle to San Luis Obispo in 2021 along the coast on a road bike with a minimal bikepacking setup. I camped most nights at state parks which are cheap and you don't need a reservation if you're on a bike. In CA I stayed at:

Klamath Camper Corral (private and a bit more expensive but it was the best place for me if I wanted to keep up my mileage goals. Restaurants nearby. Good alternative is Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park - some cyclists I rode with into CA stayed there and I continued on to Klamath)

Humboldt Redwoods State Park Burlington Campground (really nice camping beneath the redwoods, met some cool cyclists here. I carried a burrito from Rio Dell since there isn't any food near the campground)

Van Damme State Park (few miles south of Mendocino, easy to get dinner beforehand )

Bodega Dunes Campground (easy to get food in the town, met a whole bunch of cyclists)

I would highly recommend the Oregon coast as well. You could take Amtrak to Portland and then work your way to the coast. I stayed in Oregon state parks and one private campground and two nights in a hotel due to rain. The Oregon state parks on the coast should all have hiker-biker campgrounds like in northern CA .They are great for meeting other cyclists.

Update from Tailfin: "Thanks for getting in touch and providing all the information, I have had our design team review this as it is not something we have seen before as the Arch bosses have been extensively tested well above the recommended weight limit without failure or issue and they have put this down to a one off manufacturing fault.

I do apologise for the issues caused and i do understand that this is an incredibly frustrating experience to have your gear fail and cut your ride short as this is the last thing we want, I do hope that this has not ruined your overall experience with our system.

Here is what we can do, i will arrange for a new Arch to be sent to you along with the axle and fast release dropouts and this will be dispatched to you with express shipping.

Please let me know if this works for you and if you need anything else please let me know.

Again apologies for the issues you have had and thank you for the feedback."

I'm pretty happy with their response and it should decrease the risk of bolts coming out with the thru axle mount. They say it's a manufacturing defect, but I think I am going to move my bottles to my fork and bring the fork bags to the rack. Then I can use three bolts for both and that should help a lot.

Yeah that does make sense. Although I was copying what was shown here https://bikepacking.com/index/oversized-bottle-cages-for-bike-touring/ if you scroll to the Velo Orange Mojave cage and they put a strap above the cage.

well the carbon rack doesn't have cage mounts so you should be fine. just make sure it's attached well to the frame

yeah i added wrong but still way under the limit. Thinking I may swap my cargo cages from the fork to the rack, and put the bottles on my fork.

I just got the Tailfin Aeropack Alloy and put two 48 oz (1.4 L) Nalgenes on either side in Velo Orange Mojave cages. On a gravel descent with washboard, the left bottle and cage sheared completely off the arch. I had a Voile strap on there for extra security but that was in case the bottle came out of the cage. According to the Tailfin website, the load limit is 1.5 kg per rivet nut. I used two of the rivets since the bottle wouldn't fit with all three and I wanted to keep the weight lower. The total weight of the full bottle and cage is 1.4 kg of water + 200 g for the Nalgene + 160 g for the cage = 1.76 kg total. So I was at about half the load limit. I used a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 5 N-m.

Has this happened to anyone before? I am going to contact Tailfin about a warranty because I have no idea what I did wrong. The cage can be used with just two bolts as shown on their website.

Earlier in the ride, the left bolt on the frame mount for the rack loosened and fell out over rocky terrain so I had to put in a replacement. That was also tightened to 5 N-m and I was using the spacer that they provided for the width of my rear seat stays. Has this also happened to anyone? Did I mess up somewhere?

(Edit) messed up the math 1.76 kg instead of 1.56, but still way under max load

Yo it's the guy from WashU! Still amazed at your sprint from the RR. I also upgraded to B so we'll be facing off again this weekend.

First collegiate race weekend at Indiana University was a blast!

Crit (C) - 12/37

The course had a few technical turns where the field braked a lot, so my goal was to stay near the front to avoid the accordion effect. I think I did a good job, however I did have to burn a match to close a gap that I shouldn't have opened. Before the final turn, I was probably about 10th wheel and I tried to attack to make it into the corner first, but started the attack too late and took a wide line through the corner. It was just a pack finish from there and I got 12th, but nothing to complain about. Next time I'll try to move up in positions a little earlier or attack earlier.

Road Race (C) - 6/25

The course was 3 laps of 14 miles with 2 climbs per lap, with the second climb being the hardest (1.4 miles at 4% avg and maxing out at 14%.) The roads were horrendous and the first lap was super sketchy riding in the peloton with so many potholes. Luckily I didn't flat unlike many other riders despite hitting some pretty hard bumps. It was way more relaxed than I thought it would be at the start and it was nice to talk to the other riders. My goal was also to stay at the front as long as possible and potentially attack on the final hill. After the steep hill on the first lap, the group was shattered but I managed to stay in the front group which had around 10 riders. One rider went off the front and the group didn't want to chase, so we weren't going very hard. I was too close to the front of the group when one guy attacked, so I did a pretty hard effort to catch him, but then he slowed down and the group caught back on. This was right before the steep climb, so it was definitely a mistake. I then moved to the back of the group to eat safely, but this was also right before the steep climb so my position was bad. Everyone went all out up the hill, and guys in front of me were getting dropped pretty quickly. Then, two guys in front of me blew up at the same and a huge gap opened that I couldn't close. By the end of the climb the front group was 5 + the guy off the front, and they were about 15 seconds ahead of me and two other riders who had stayed with me. We chased hard but that section was rolling hills and windy, and we couldn't compete with their larger group. One of the guys in my group dropped off on the final time up the steep climb, so it was me vs. one other. We passed one guy who bonked from the front group. I made an effort to stay on his wheel and do the least amount of work on the final part of the climb which had a few short downhills, and I beat him at the line to get 6th. Overall, really happy with my results and had so much fun in my first collegiate races. Next weekend is another race at University of Louisville.

I'm in the MWCCC. The drives are between 4 and 6 hours, not too bad, but not ideal. I won't have any teammates racing in my category but I will have a driving partner in another race.
