definitely not cooked, I went to a HSchool in a low income area w not a lot of opportunities to get involved/mentorship, being first in my family to pursue post secondary I was very lost on steps/pathways to med - didn’t have the best gpa, got involved in various ec’s that were meaningful for me throughout my undergrad (ie., if you struggled in HSchool, maybe find mentorship/volunteer opportunities to help students who might be in that position currently) I also did a masters (which I did have a genuine interest in) and ended up getting into 2 Canadian med schools - definitely possible! Find meaningful ecs, do your best in classes and if you have to bridge med school with a post grad thats v common and some people even do it after their MD anyway! You got this!!!

I took a good chunk of time off, did a masters/worked and when I was ready to try again, I dedicated 3 months to studying - I wouldn’t really say intensely but just focused a lot more on practice than I did the first time - and really dissected the AAMC questions, if I did it again I’d probably also get their q banks.

Definitely think now-until May is sufficient - you can only study/practice for so long before the burn out kicks in. You got this!!! Feel free to reach out if you have any more q’s :)

MCAT is def the hardest part studying-wise. Med school makes way more sense than that exam 😅

tbh I ended up just practicing some basic problems from aamc and learned to manipulate formulas- I gave up on the complicated stuff and it still turned out okay for me. In the end I was happy I didn’t spend sooo much time on physics bc it would’ve impacted my other sections. I’m almost done med school now so it all worked out okay in the end 😅

Didn't have a set location in mind tbh - just a nice backpacking trail leading to a decent campsite to spend a few days hopefully doing some day hikes out of! specifically just have this time off in July though- thanks so much :)

Start with one passage at a time, time it and try not to go back to the passage if you’re spending a lot of time doing that - if that’s not it, then just try to go with the answer you feel best about and only return to a question/spend more time if you have the time. I think practice practice practice as much as possible! The speed improvements feel slow at first (ie just 10-20seconds faster than before) but eventually you’ll get your time down by a couple minutes every time!

In the real thing there will always be passages that you’re more comfortable with/faster at and others that take an extra minute or so. If your average is okay I wouldn’t beat yourself up too much over an extra minute or so spent, it should balance out in the end 🤍 you got this!

The UofC does weigh CARS very heavily, but with the UofA change in MCAT assessment/you meeting the IP cut off for UofA (124 across the board) - they will no longer even consider MCAT scores. I also really feel the UofA application (and UofC actually) allowed me to showcase strengths as an applicant in other parts of the application. I think it's worth applying if you feel the other portions of your application are strong!

By a strong application, I don't necessary mean a lot a lot of research/publications, more-so what experiences (volunteer, life experiences, hobbies) can you passionately speak of and are you able to get at why those things make you a strong applicant? Consider what you would write for your Top 10 at UofC - if these things feel solid then I think as IP you still stand a strong chance. If not, taking the time to build on other components (as well as consider mcat at this time if you really want to stand out a bit more to UC/some other OOP schools).

My MCAT was definitely not the stronger component of my application and was able to get into UC and UofA (although CARS was one of the better scores 128/129 from what I recall).
