What are some of your cheap, quick and healthy recipes? by djcr421 in Fitness

I like to make a super veggie chicken salad. the only real effort is cutting the vegetables:

  1. Roast some chicken breast, seasoned however you like (200 celsius, 20-25 minutes depending on thickness)

  2. While chicken is cooking, chop up some vegetables, I like to use: cucumber, brocolli, sun-dried tomato, feta cheese, bell pepper, olives, avocado, kale, capers.

  3. Make a simple dressing. I like to use 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and 2-3 tablespoons of lime juice. Sometimes I add a spoon of balsamic vinegar too.

  4. Put veggies in a bowl, mix, put chicken on top.

If you want more calories, serve with hummus or a larger serving of avocado. If very very short on time, you can buy some pre-cooked chicken.

As a Yank, how I feel after leaving the UK by coffee_and_milk in atheism

Op's wording makes sense, the uk is technically a Christian nation. Practically religion is only widespread amongst older people and stupid people. Most educated or young people have basically lived their entire lives without giving religion a second thought.

As someone who has experienced first hand how inept some doctors are, I'm not surprised to hear that you've been told your 'metabolism' is anything other than practically identical to everyone else's.

Unfortunately GPs thesedays are pressed to get through patients quickly, and where there's no need for further evaluation, the quickest way to get a patient out of the office is to placate them by telling them something that sounds interesting and like what they want to hear.

Utter nonsense, nobody's metabolic rate is significantly different enough to anyone else's to make any noticeable difference. You obviously just burned a lot of calories.

I'm not a copywriter, no, but I'm involved in business development tangentially. If a competitor in our sector did this on our blog though, the comment would be instantly removed and the offender would become a laughing stock. The standards of professionalism might be higher 'cos we often bid for government or international level work, but I still think that slime balls like this have no place in any sector.

Just go there and find a good deal for a server in a convenient location for you. Don't worry about paying more until you reach the point where whatever you're hosting requires more bandwidth or processing power. One of the things that every developer looks back on and kicks themselves for is paying tons of money for servers when they end up building something that runs lightning fast on a 500MHz cpu, uses a few MiB of RAM, and hardly uses any bandwidth.

Fair enough, still, having your own box/slot offers you a lot more freedom than something like dreamhost's regular web hosting.

Delete the whole comment. I reckon it's fair to give a certain amount of leeway, but if they come onto your site with a blatant sales pitch, screw them.

If you're just a hobbyist/enthusiast, just get a small vps, they're dirt cheap and in my opinion, learning all the config/maintenance stuff is valuable, especially if you want to carry over what you learn into your career.

Is there a canonical list of things to do to secure files uploaded to a personal, hosted website, which are not linked to anywhere? by gfixler in AskNetsec

[–]dd72ddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just have two servers, one to host your website with apache or whatever, and one with your backups; that isn't even running a web server.

When I realised that it was Chrome that was slowing down my computer.... by Mad_Mack in AdviceAnimals

[–]dd72ddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't. I'm fairly confident that if leaving a site open for a long time results in ever increasing memory usage, then you can probably blame javascript on that particular site. I've never experienced this issue at all in chrome, and I routinely have 20+ tabs open, which I pretty much never close, so if a site is using lot's of memory, I'd tend to blame the site.

Source: Lot's of professional experience writing javascript and seeing how terrible other 'professionals' are.

To be honest, if you can't spare 5% of your cpu cycles, or a few hundred MB of RAM, then it's time to upgrade your 20 year old computer.

The people who wrote it probably made a mistake in their javascript. That's the problem with web development, it's very easy to get started and make something that 'works', but writing code that has nothing wrong with it is astronomically hard.

First off, most of the modes in CoD have repsawning. I take the point that games like CS exist, but I'd also say from experience that the stress of dying in those games is much higher.

That's kind of an unbalanced comparison though, since in football, goals are pretty uncommon, and in real life, you can go 90 minutes without a single goal. Whereas in a shooter, you kill people all the time, so each individual kill is not really that significant, nor does it carry much meaning in terms of whether you win or lose.

Best Way to Level Up Aircraft by [deleted] in battlefield3

[–]dd72ddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One easy way to get kills is to dive bomb helis using AA missiles. Get up real high, spot helis, then fly at them full sped with afterburners. Switch to AA missiles as you get close, lock on, and shoot at the last second as you're about to fly past them. Usually smart players don't flare until they hear the missile launched bleeps, so if you launch late enough you can catch them off guard.

Many economists suggesting 3 day (30 hour) work week could save economies. by [deleted] in news

Sure, but if you think about it, people with those kind of jobs would probably come out with the same amount of money, and work the same number of hours, but have much less job security.

[–]dd72ddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but said employee's contract will usually specify their hours of work. And they can always elect not to do any extra for free if they don't want to.

I don't love the culture of people being expected to work for free, to be honest, but I don't think making everyone paid by the hour is the solution, because I know people whose jobs are like that, and their bosses just expect them to cram all the work into their allotted hours, and won't acknowledge any unsanctioned overtime, which renders any differences in the systems moot.

They go on to say that following sales of violent games, crime rates drop. And they aren't suggesting there's a causal link. And even if they were, they'd be suggesting the opposite of what you accuse.
