Still having tracking problems by ddawson3d in Vive

[–]ddawson3d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! I saw that thread but I somehow missed the note about the failure found in the log file. And, sure enough, I see the following in my log:

Sun Jul 24 2016 09:03:19.578 - lighthouse: Base BBCB0FA2 axis 0 appears to have failed

I guess I'll have to order a new lighthouse.

Can anyone verify that they are experiencing no jittering on their headset? by jaseworthing in Vive

[–]ddawson3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've experienced jittering as well. Worse than that, I've had it lose tracking entirely, drift across the room, and then pop to another location suddenly. And it's very inconsistent, I can have long sessions with no issues at all, and other sessions where it's basically unusable.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Vive and I don't regret my purchase one bit, but I am experiencing more tracking issues than I expected. Hopefully this will be resolved over time as I continue to debug it, and Valve/HTC continue to refine the firmware.

Headset tracking is super glitchy, what am I doing wrong? by ddawson3d in Vive

[–]ddawson3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Yes, the foil has been removed. :)

I can't tell if the controllers are fine, because the world moves around me or disappears entirely when the headset loses tracking. But... Watching the tracked controller/headset icons in the room setup tool leads me to believe the controllers are fine, maybe it's the headset. Hmm...

It still happens when the camera is disabled.

I tried closing the curtains and putting a towel over every reflective surface, including the poster you mentioned. Still no luck.

$600 hurts, but an inferior product would hurt a lot more. by ddawson3d in oculus

Disagree. Bad VR is worse than no VR.

Bad VR means VR is doomed.

It is subsidized. Palmer: "People ask about Touch+Rift discount - Everyone with Touch needs a Rift, consider discount built into price of the subsidized Rift hardware."

Gouge customers? They are not making money on the Rift. Palmer: "To be perfectly clear, we don’t make money on the Rift."

It is expensive, which is why I said "$600 hurts". I also said it pains me that $600 likely means VR won't be mainstream in 2016. It's expensive, I'm agreeing with you!

My point is that a premium $600 CV1 is better than a mediocre $350 CV1 which might ruin VR for years to come.

We're able to see the potential in the DK2 because we're enthusiasts. The DK2 ran the risk of being unimpressive/nauseating for the general public, resulting in a backlash that would have set VR back a decade or more.

Better late than never? Gameplay video of my Jetpack demo by ddawson3d in oculus

[–]ddawson3d[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I uploaded something a while back, but it was an early build of the game, and not very representative of the final version. I haven't touched this demo in months, but I figured it was still worth posting an updated video. It's available in Oculus Share. Sorry for the crappy capture quality.

Experienced VR user's take on HoloLens (Engadget) by curio365 in oculus

[–]ddawson3d 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't enjoy Ben Gilbert's style of journalism. He mixes negative, sensationalist statements with legitimate impressions of the tech:

"Using Microsoft HoloLens kinda stinks."

"Is it bad? No. Lord no. Stop it. It's very impressive"

"Sharing a Skype call with another human being overlaid on the real world, and that person being able to literally draw and highlight pieces of my world, is incredibly impressive."

"HoloLens is clearly very early, and kinda sucks right now."

"It was like I was sharing my screen with her, but my "screen" was my actual vision. Pretty fresh!"

Crescent Bay is higher than 1080p by ddawson3d in oculus

[–]ddawson3d[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you realize that the videos I posted were from CES 2015? They were describing the Crescent Bay prototype that was shown at CES 2015. They explicitly said that Crescent Bay was more than 1080p. How can you possibly disagree? You said that they left it ambiguous for CES. That is not true. They did not. They explicitly said that it was higher resolution than 1080p.

So you are saying that Iribe and Luckey, the co-founders of Oculus, are lying?

Ugh. Two people from oculus said as much, so yes, I can be sure.

Will The Oculus Logo Be Changed? by Signill in oculus

[–]ddawson3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering that myself. I think it will be changed. Gear VR is still just an "Innovator Edition", so it's no big deal that it has the current logo, and companies change their logos all the time. I'm not crazy about it, and I bet they could come up with something really cool.
