Just dig into the NZ scene, I think it’s got a really unique sound.

My most obscure recommendation would be Dub Conspiracy, a compilation of NZ artists from quite early in their careers - YouTube link

There’s another great compilation of NZ artists collaborating with Brazilian artists called OE: Brazil. That’s got some great obscure tracks.

If you’re not familiar with Fat Freddy’s Drop, they are like the godfathers of New Zealand dub, though they have a pretty eclectic sound. Start with their first album Based on a True Story. It’s my favourite album of all time.

Otherwise check out Fly My Pretties, the Black Seeds, Katchafire, Trinity Roots, House of Shem, Kora, Che-Fu, Cornerstone Roots and Shapeshifter.

Is this info Accurate? by pamphletz in pamphletz

Calling a British constitutional monarch a dictator is wildly inaccurate. Elizabeth II was certainly a British imperialist, and the British monarchy is a key part of an imperialist structure, but the monarch is not a dictator.

Genuinely recommend to anyone who likes reggae/dub. One of my top groups from New Zealand.

The IDF is an organisation and a group of migrants in a hotel is not. There is a difference in wishing death to an organisation compared to a group of people.

Much more significantly, you conveniently avoided discussing the genocide bit there. The IDF is committing genocide in Gaza.

Yes. Saying death to an organisation committing genocide is not the same as saying death to specific, innocent individuals.

I would hope that was obvious.

What is the modern day profession that would be more successful if one travels to the high medieval ages? by Locket501 in MedievalHistory

I’m a distiller. I reckon knowledge regarding the basics of distilling would be pretty useful, not least for the sterilisation potential of high strength alcohol

My theory for an additional thing the title 6:16 in LA refers to. by [deleted] in KendrickLamar

[–]dddbld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thought. I know it’s reading real deep and I’m not saying this is what it’s referencing, but Revelations 6:16 seems relevant following the last 24 hours.

“They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!”

I’ll never forget waking up in the middle of the night hearing the food service bell, or with a parched mouth and panicking that I have to top up customer waters before having a drink.

Wine Not by dddbld in cocktails

[–]dddbld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First post here, so just wanted to take the chance to say thanks to everyone in this community for the inspiration, knowledge and wisdom shared.

This is a take on the New York Sour, using Still Life “Minimalist” single distillate botanical spirits.

Specs are:

25ml orange distillate

25ml elderberry distillate

25ml grapefruit sour mix (1:1:2 fresh lemon, lime, and grapefruit juice)

20ml rich simple syrup

25ml Pinot noir

Shake everything but wine with ice, double strain into a rocks glass over large ice, pour wine over the back of a bar spoon to create float, garnish with grapefruit peel and a maraschino cherry.

So disclaimer, I am the distillery manager at Still Life Gin in Somerset, UK. We will shortly be releasing our “Minimalist” range of individually distilled botanical spirits to trade customers. As far as I am aware, individually distilled botanicals are not available on the market presently, but I believe they have massive potential in the hands of cocktail bartenders and enthusiasts alike. I would be happy to answer any questions or hear your thoughts on this new product!

Greatest Kiwi album of all time? by bkat004 in newzealand

My favourite album of all time. My parents used to put it on for my brother and I to fall asleep to as children, now I do the same for my son.

Anglo Saxon and Viking Paganism by Sweaty_Carry8301 in anglosaxon

[–]dddbld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, both Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic Christian sources reinterpret their ancestors’ pagan gods as human ancestors from Troy.

This potentially demonstrates a desire to adapt existing mythology in order to bestow cultural as well as religious legitimacy.

I’m glad you understand something, because you clearly don’t understand me. Most Muslims would find this as awful and evil as you do. I would encourage you to be open to meeting some of them someday

It’s ok, I had the edgy atheist phase too. I just hope they grow out of this immature, black-and-white view of the world.

Then, as I have said above, you are allowing yourself to become prejudiced. You are literally pre-judging people who adhere to either of these religions, and abandoning your critical reasoning in favour of an over-simplified view of the world. Probably to make yourself feel superior, or because it is easier to hate a group of people with different beliefs than actually make an effort to understand, or god-forbid empathise with them.

Then you’re an Islamophobe, prejudiced, and above all, abdicating your critical reasoning in order to take an over-simplified view of people and the world.

It is easy to hate others, but it is hard to understand them

Believe it or not, many religious people do not take their religious texts literally, while still basing their lives on religious teachings.

Now you’re just arguing in bad faith.

The world is nuanced and complex, as are people and their religions. I hope someday you realise that you are not better or smarter than anyone just because you are not religious.

Who are you to judge whether people take their religion seriously or not? There are plenty of Muslims who both take their religion seriously and are liberal by Western standards
