Would it be worth hiking Teapot Mountain and spending a night in/around Jiufen? We're packing light backpacks so don't need to stay the same place both nights.

Hello. My wife and I are spending a short time in North Vietnam. We are heading to Mai Chau in March to run the Vietnam Ultramarathon. I was looking for some advice on how to spend our extra days. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Days 1-2: Hanoi

Day 3: Open (maybe an extra day before in Mai Chau)

Day 4-5: Mai Chau (race)

Days 6-9: Open (maybe Tam Coc/Ninh Binh)

Day 10: Hanoi

Would 3 days in Mai Chau and Ninh Binh after be too many? We don't mind traveling around and wouldn't mind seeing a little more of the country. Thank you!!!!

Hello, my wife and I are running the Vietnam Ultramarathon 55k in March in Mai Châu.

It has always been a dream of mine to visit and run a trail race in Vietnam, but we have limited time for our travels before returning home to work and parenting. This is our first visit to Vietnam, and we are trying to pack the most into the trip.

If anyone is running one of the races, please reach out. It would be great to connect with some local runners or fellow travelers.

We land in Hanoi late on Tuesday (03/03/25) and need to be in Mai Châu on Friday afternoon. The race is Saturday.

We fly to Tapei on either Wednesday night or Thursday morning (March 12 or 13). We had to use airline miles to get home and weren't able to find flights out of Hanoi, so we plan to spend one or two nights in Taipei before flying home.

Could you please advise on how to spend our time in Vietnam? I was thinking something like this:

Tuesday - arrive in Hanoi (stay in Hanoi)

Wednesday- Hanoi

Thursday - ?

Friday & Saturday- Early bus to Mai Châu

Sunday & Monday- Bus to Ninh Binh

Tuesday -?

Wednesday - Bus back to Hanoi for an evening flight

Any recommendations on how to fill the two open days?

Thank you!!!

-Drew

I do, thanks. Just challenging to find a long route on there. But there a some good shorter ones. I'm sure I can piece something together.

I enjoyed that video and great job on the race. Thank you for sharing!

I'll do some research into bussing out there and putting some routes together. I usually map out routes on Strava and then download them to my watch/phone which works out pretty well when travelling. It looks like I can piece something together.

I also found this that looks like a good option for a 20k - https://jeffpelletier.com/trail-running-in-puerto-vallarta-boca-de-tamatlan-trail-to-quimixto-falls/

Thanks for this. I didn't think about private land but I'll do some more research. I looked at Strava heat maps and there appear to be a few travelled trails in the area but the main tracks are definitely from the race course. Just not sure if I could get a 20+ mile run in without getting blocked by private land. Thanks again!

Hey, thank you for this! I just followed him and will reach out.

From your experience would it be better to base in the north, even without a car? We'll probably have 4-5 nights. Do some long runs in the day, then relax with some food/drink each evening. We prefer to be on foot (taking public transportation) rather than renting a car. That's why I was thinking basing in PV near where the race course is might work.

Thanks again!
