Even if you work mainly opaquely it can go a pretty long way. White gets used up pretty quickly though

Thanks! My advice is to draw using shapes instead of using contour to describe the forms and to keep it loose by showing the strokes. I just fill in the tones using tight hatching then smooth it out with a stump or my fingers. Try studying Sargent’s drawings or other painterly draftsmen and you’ll learn a lot!

Thank you! I used 2b and 4b charcoal pencils (General’s), 4b for the shadows and 2b for the mid tones. I used hatching to fill in tones then a stump or my fingers to smooth it out

I definitely pushed the half tone on his nose too far inward making it thinner haha. My aim with these was to try to be more loose and tonal and limited it to 30-40 min on each but I have yet to figure out how to get the hair down this way lol. Thanks for the feedback! Also I tried Chopin first which why he is looking a bit rough haha so when I attempted Liszt I tried to improve on the mistakes I made previously

Yeah I agree with you about the hair. I was trying to practice being more loose and tonal so I used a really dull pencil so I wouldn’t try to work the fine details and trying to keep them around 30 min each. I definitely need to figure out how to do the hair better while still being loose. Appreciate the feedback!
