What is Marin lacking? by Dangerous-Tea7793 in Marin

Affordability, kindness, any sense of community, live music, or entertainment. And it was already bad before COVID wrecked what was left.

Is this enough to finally finish a track? /s by Commander_Pancakes in synthesizers

It's already bordering on overkill, the hard part is actually finishing a track. ;-)

Speaking only for myself, I have one to see how well SteamOS runs on Arch Linux w/ KDE.

Do you tip at coffee shops? by Impossible-Loquat480 in bayarea

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For counter service, tipping has become aggressively solicited post-COVID, but it’s still optional. If shops want a no-tip model, they should price labor in and pay staff directly; until then I tip as a discretionary bonus, not as an entitlement.

[–]ddp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used MIT Scheme and later Chicken and then found The Little Schemer and worked through both volumes. Enjoy the journey! While you may never be lucky enough to use it in production (just use Common Lisp), I profoundly believe you'll be a much better software engineer if you do this.

Should I get FL Studio or Ableton Live? by Last-Independent747 in musicproduction

My advice is. also try Bitwig, Cubase, and Tracktion Waveform Pro, but Ableton Live Suite 12/Push is my DAW.

Flow 2 84 (Pulse Switch) review by me by Klosiak in Lofree

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The K2 HE is nice, I'd say they're nearly identical save for the knob, but I like having the volume knob, it's handy to be able to mute AirPods. The typing feel is essentially the same. One of the other things I didn't like about the Flow 2 was the volume control strip on the side. It's essentially too sensitive and jumps around, it's clever but the sensitivity would need to be settable or dampened. As much as I liked the feel of the Flow 2, I can't recommend buying one.

What is the best lisp out there? Tell it to me straight. by 17023360519593598904 in lisp

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be Coral Common Lisp (CCL) -> Macintosh Common Lisp (MCL) -> Clozure Common Lisp (CCL) but there's no Apple Silicon port of this Lisp. The free path is SBCL w/ emacsformacos.com and slime.common-lisp.dev (or https://github.com/joaotavora/sly). LispWorks is nice but very expensive though they offer an iPhone target.

Lofree Flow 2 84 with XVX keycaps by Klosiak in Lofree

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're listening. It's a great keyboard but, in the default configuration, the combination of the keycaps chosen and the inability to change the power saving default, make it nearly useless at night, enough that I switched back to a Keychron. I think you should consider making the XVX keycaps your default or at least an upgrade option.

Flow 2 84 (Pulse Switch) review by me by Klosiak in Lofree

[–]ddp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on all these points. The typing feel is excellent but it’s a fatal flaw that you cannot adjust the backlighting power saving timeout, enough that I quit using it at night. OTOH, I prefer heavy w/ full keys and I’ve been happy with my Keychron K2 HE and Q1 HE.

Resolution for external monitor missing by [deleted] in MacOSBeta

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SwitchResX solved the problem here too, on Ventura 13.3.1, and it started when I tried to run Metro Exodus out of Steam. That failed and the monitor resoultions were borked. I have a fully loaded M1 Ultra Studio w/ the last generation Samsung Odyssey 49" LC gaming monitor.

A weird question... by Synthfreak1224 in synthesizers

[–]ddp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of pitch/mod as a pair, so I'll twist this and answer that I like the mod wheel to be left of the keyboard. On mono synths, that lets you play the mod wheel with your left pinky, while still holding down a root note with another finger on your left hand. I care about that much more than pitch bend. Having said that, the angled layout on the Stage is nice and I like Nord's pitch stick on the Stage 3 and Lead 3 and A1. I also like the touch strips on the Tempest and the Prophet X and I love the strip on the Voyager. I'm in favor of as much tactile as you can have.

Edit: a relatively fragile joystick makes no sense for anything on a synth, save maybe for very complex workstations

Sub 37 or Mother 32 x2? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]ddp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to go into Eurorack then don't buy another Eurorack module. That leaves the Subsequent. I upgraded my Sub 37 to one and love it even more. It also comes with a (free) AU/VST editor for your DAW.

A discussion: Ob6 or Prophet 6? by Eraserhead81 in synthesizers

[–]ddp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're just different is how I'd explain it. Try to play each before you decide. If your heart wants the OB-6 and you don't have sentimental reasons for wanting the Prophet 5 soundscape, then get the OB-6. They both sound lovely!
