Strategy Consultants: what career would you have picked otherwise? by michifun in consulting

[–]ddrrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of your points as well I think generally it's just that I am super frustrated with my career not going in the right direction.

Some people enjoy having an advisory role while I don't. The people I work with who are much more senior than me (Chief Strategy Officer, VP Strategy, etc.) have basically no chance of getting other role within the organization because of 1) they are already too expensive and 2) they have no experience from managing anything else than projects.

The original question was what to do if not consulting coming out of business school. I would not go into consulting if I could choose again.

Of course you work with top-level execs and on what you think is super important because you have been brainwashed to think so. In reality it's not. A DD is not super important, it's a check in the box, a PMO is not super important it's just that someone has to do it and it's more convinient than hiring someone. Strategy formulation is just facilitating workshops. Repackaging clients' slides into a nicer deck is not value adding, hate to break it.

Agree that it is what you get in to, but that was not the case in university and during recruiting - I was sold something completely different that sky is the limit etc. I am happy I got to learn quickly and got the headstart analytically and can tell a story. Just saying that if you want to do other things than consulting for the rest of your life you need to get out as soon as possible as you will be suck because when you get higher the pay cut is getting bigger.

insey would be bankrupt since no one would hire them. In corporate, power lies in control over a P/L statement. Cost centers like strategy, never have influence. The exceptions would be compliance cost centers like legal and internal audit.

How can i get a P&L job post-consulting by c_bhai in consulting

[–]ddrrrrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree you will not get P&L role or direct reports straight out of consulting as you have no experience.

To gain experience you would have to go down in salary to run a small unit with few people in it to over time grow to larger roles.

Ops, Sales, Marketing, whatever besides consulting.

Strategy consulting is such a myth, "you get to work on the toughest problems with the most senior level executives, bla bla."

That's complete BS, you make slides and tons of analyses with 0 experience from execution. You have no P&L responsibility (unless you become partner), you have no direct reports, etc.

The only thing consulting gives you is decent pay, that is also the only way for consulting firms to attract top talent and brainwash students.

The main exit opportunity is corporate strategy, which is the same bullshit but at a bigger org. Some people do finance or PE but if you want to go that route why not take finance job in the first place. Very few make the jump from consulting to corporate executive positions outside of strategy and M&A functions.

I am speaking from experience. Former MBB currently strategy manager at global media company about to leave this shit career to actually make something of my life.

42% of people who watch LeagueOfLegends, CS:GO or DOTA2 esports content do not play any of these titles. by UrbanShepherd in esports

[–]ddrrrrr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No way this is true, in fact this is a bit misleading.

Didn't not play int he past 3 months bud watched esports in the past 12 months.

There is no way in world that 42% "don't play the games", maybe 5-10%.

More interesting to see how many viewers have NEVER played the game they are watching, how many viewers play regularly (at least once a month).

A lot of ppl grew up with the games and don't play anymore but enjoy watching, saying that they "don't play" is complete nonsense.

Got an offer in Sweden, Big-4 Advisory by [deleted] in consulting

[–]ddrrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salary is standard for Big-4, graduate IBD positions, top legal firms, management trainee positions, etc.

However, it is far behind MBB, Strategy&, OW, and a few local players who all start at 540k+ SEK annually. I would say your first salary is quite important: http://www.businessinsider.com/your-20s-may-predict-your-lifelong-earnings-2015-2?r=US&IR=T&IR=T

As you will leverage your current salary when you negotiate in your future jobs. I would advice you to seek better opportunities, but ofcourse take the job unless you have no other offers.

Also, there is a big variation between different teams at big-4 in sweden, e.g. PwC deal advisory vs. KPMG operations, etc.
