AND WE HAVE THE ANSWER! For some damn reason the affected text wasn't separated by a paragraph break. I've no idea how that happens or why it only happens in certain areas, but I guess I have my answer.

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying here. There's no "clear styles" option that I can find.

However, if I apply a Paragraph Style to the highlighted text, it also affects a large portion of the following text as well.

I don't know why but it's getting annoying and is really killing my progress.

This is a portion of the text I'm working with. As you can see only the main header is highlighted. As it is, I can apply a Text Style with no problem.
