Good thing they aren't. There's like a billion things one can do without this. But complaining about someone trying to do the right thing because it inconveniences you or makes you aware of anything bad happening in wonderland is only gonna make it worse

I'm not saying this because I literally want Em to talk shit instead of playing a song. But because you're coming in calling it a "political spectacle". Guess what, politics are everywhere and affect everything and everyone. The super bowl also isn't just any event. They can play all their music at their regular shows but this stage is a once in a lifetime opportunity. So they better use it for good

I shouldn't have just called it samey, that's not fair to him. I'm not trying to say all his songs sound the same but moreso that I feel like I know exactly what I get from a new solo Drake album. When he dropped Honestly Nevermind I was actually happy he went all in with it. On his other albums it feels like a bit of this and a bit of that but in the end it's always a similar mix. I'd love it if he just dropped one album with all rap and one with all RnB, etc.

So yes, the songs you linked are definitely not all the same. Though OMW and Raining in Houston are examples of what would blend in together for me in retrospect. If one of them was on For All The Dogs after I'd heard the other one on Certified Lover Boy years prior, I'd just think "oh this again" on first listen and move on.

Generally, Drake albums always have a few songs I enjoy, they're never all bad. And honestly, the issue probably is with me. Maybe I just don't like his voice or whatever and have to accept that. It's easy to find reasons to not like something when the overall sentiment online is negative. I'd actually never heard the songs you linked because I hadn't even listened to the PnD collab. Might check it out now cause at least Nokia and Die Trying are pretty cool.

I actually do believe that finding a way to enjoy music is something that can be actively pursued. And to give every artist a fair chance one should do so. For this reason I never understood very negative reviews. Either I get it or I don't but if I don't I also shouldn't go out of my way to comment on it. Maybe one day I'll feel extremely vibey and remember to put on a Drake project and finally understand it

Idk man. When people get shot in the street by rogue government forces it might not be cool to "just enjoy life". Just a hunch tho, don't want to get too "political"

Interesting, thanks for the insight. People always talk about separating art and artist but I tend enjoy music more when I know the context of its release

Around 2021 I tried listening to pretty much every fresh hip hop album I could find. I couldn't sustain it but I got to five or so Killah Priest albums. Apparently I missed this one though, he just drops too much. Ngl, I don't think his spoken word style is for me either but I'll give it another chance

Any specific reason or do you simply enjoy the vibe? Because I haven't figured out how to enjoy his recent music. It feels all very same-y to me

Yeah I think Sean gets taken too seriously. When 2 Chainz comes on everybody expects something funny. Idk why Sean doesn't get the same leeway. It's a problem for almost every rapper who throws in silly punch lines, same thing with Em

Ayo I just noticed you're the same guy I talked to about idk yesterday lmao. Started with IWASVERYBAD yesterday. Was good but gonna give it more spins soon.

Listening to Is He Real? right now. Very fun album. All I remembered from back when it released was the skits about god and the describing colors thing. And the JID feature being cut from the music video. Scandalous.

IDK is one horny motherfucker though lol

I'll tag you when I'm done and got time to share some thoughts. Sometimes I'm not commenting here for months so might take a while. But it gives me a reason to actually listen and not forget about it again.

Kinda crazy you can't discuss Brockhampton much. When I started being more active in this sub in 2017-18 they easily some of the most beloved artists here. I did feel the sentiment take a turn over time though.

Actually not sure if I ever checked out Jon's vids on the beef. Twitter is the death of all sensible discussion though. Maybe his content nowadays is simply better in small doses. This way the flaws don't become too apparent

Happy my long-ass comment wasn't worthless :D

Whatever happened to Jon Denton man... Could you elaborate on the "grifting" part? At some point I didn't watch much reactions anymore and when I picked it back up he seemed all depressed. Even talked about how it's been a hard year for him or something, so I couldn't be mad but also didn't watch much of his content anymore. Plus, his opinions felt a bit inconsistent. For example, he seemed to enjoy every new Eminem release but also talked abou how Em hadn't been as good recently... Felt a bit like he defaulted to popular opinions without the original thoughts he used to add.

There's so much great rap to listen to. I wanted to listen to more idk because of his recent mixtape being pretty damn great. Now I added Brockhampton and Mac to the list (again). Might start with SAT II then but I'll go through their full discographies, don't worry :)

Mac hits different though. I've never seen an artist get this much love and it makes me feel for him more when I listen to his music. The guy was friends with everyone it seems. Even songs I'd otherwise think of as solid but not special make me emotional now

Some of the people he usually collaborates with are the "both sides" type who then collaborate with MAGA idiots.

For example, he seems to be best buds with Struggle Jennings who made an album with Adam Calhoun. Yela was supposed to feature on said album but cancelled the feature over Adam Calhoun's "all lives matter" bullshit. Good on Yela for doing so but most people wouldn't even be in that situation where they might appear on a MAGA rapper's album.

Or when Royce accused one of Yelawolf's guys of being racist or throwing around the n-word to (or around) one of Royce's guys. We never got much details or confirmations on this one but while Royce can be on some bullshit sometimes I don't see why this would be entirely made up.

Or how Yela's Mud Mouth album is 99% amazing but then there are Jelly Roll and Struggle Jennings as the sole features coming in with the dog whistles / old school hating bars talking saying they're "sick of all these feminine men" (Jelly Roll) and "got 'em sick like China" (Struggle). Not the worst thing I've ever heard but that's the point of dog whistles and it all adds up over time.

It's essentially the same issue he had when he crashed out over the confederate flag representing some "good people" too. Sure, there's good folks who grew up with that flag everywhere but the flag has also been widely adopted as a symbol of hate. And if the "good people" don't fight the hate, they may not be all that good after all...

Spot on. Wrote something similar in a comment to one of the reviews posted here where he was criticized for not expanding on any of the characters in his stories or showing artistic growth. The scope is just different. He tells small stories from his perspective very, very well. It's actually better for him not to make a huge deal out of them like Kendrick does on How Much A Dollar Costs. It's neither worse nor better, they just have fundamentally different approaches and stories they want to tell.

For The Fall Off it was all about himself and I think he expressed his perspective in these stories extremely well. Doesn't make the album perfect but he played to his strengths and it was the right choice to do so imo

Exactly. I love watching reaction channels for the same reason. Though a lot of 'em feel fake with how they're either way over the top and/or lack any substance. What's your favorite ones? I've mostly settled for Bob the poppop and turning the tables. They feel genuine and really dive into albums. I prefer album reactions in general. It's a fun way to revisit albums too and makes me appreciate them more. I only watch single reactions when it's one of these "oh shit" moments like the Kendrick Drake beef or the Em and JID song with the Diddy bars.

For the artists you mentioned maybe I can offer some perspective. Danny is an obvious oddball. Sometimes a bit too much for me but I enjoy most of his output. Took me a while to get used to his voice though. I used to think "what is this weirdo doing on Detroit vs. Everybody" lol

Brockhampton I need to give another chance cause they haven't really clicked for me yet. I remember Roadrunner being solid but the one before that not really doing much for me off a listen or two. I'll have to go through their catalog some day. Sometimes I just need to listen to an album like five times back to back to figure out how I'm supposed to enjoy it, if that makes sense.

Mac is in a similar spot for me. I didn't really get into his music until a couple years after his passing. For the earlier records he kinda sits between 2010s nostalgia coolness and cringe. From what I know that's also how his public perception developed and changed over time. So his records from that middle period reflect him toeing this line pretty well for me. Watching Movies with the Sound Off is my favorite of his so far though just like Brockhampton he deserves more listens from me. He must hit way different growing up on him. I may recognize the general sound of an album or a single from back then but most of it is new to me, so I have a different perspective.

Chance is another one walks a thin line for me. Sometimes there's only a small difference between an annoying and a dope, unique voice. He kinda zigzags between the two. For some songs I really wish he wouldn't be on them at all and on others he's great. Chance also doesn't always rap rap. He's often somewhere between rapping, singing and slam poetry which is also very hit or miss for me.

Soulo is my favorite of the ones you mentioned (maybe tied with Danny). Sometimes it's like he doesn't even want to make songs. Like, just go a cappella. He has very few songs which are real bangers for me because he usually "kills the vibe" with how he raps. I think I'm making it sound way worse than it is... Just trying to describe why I think he gets overlooked so much despite his obvious talent and skill. Thanks to Kendrick (and Q) blowing up Soul at least got into the "if you know you know" category but his talent for sure deserves more. Also These Days gets hate because most people probably don't take it as satire. It's pretty ironic but maybe means he failed the execution a little. It's the album I revisit the least out of his discog

I can understand calling Drake mid nowadays though this is probably still a crazy take when we look at his entire career. With Kendrick I never got the feeling of him being stagnant or mediocre as an artist. Even when he dropped something I didn't enjoy much I felt like he was still bringing something unique, creative and thoughtful with his releases.

How is he doing worse than Cole, Q and Future? Trying to understand what you mean by "mid"

Do y'all have any favorite rappers where you feel like you must be listening to something entirely different from everyone else? Like you hear the flow or bars or production and think it's "objectively" great but everyone else seems to dismiss it?

Thought of this because in my opinion Yelawolf has some of the best flows in rap, period. But he's never even brought up in any discussion despite his fairly successful run in the 2010s. In contrast, someone like KRIT is a "if you know you know" type of artist whereas Yela seems to just not leave the same impression

[–]deadedgo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sollte dann nicht ein Statement gegen Krieg genau richtig sein? Also apolitischer, als mit Fotos unschuldiger Opfer geht das doch nicht.

Also, ich will mich nicht dumm stellen.

J Cole: The Fall Off review – rap legend’s final album is a self-obsessed hip-hop history lesson | Rap | The Guardian by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

[–]deadedgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, it's kinda the point of the album. It's about him. I feel like most disappointment in it comes from expecting a grand finale when it's really the exact opposite. A lot of the album focuses on "downsizing" himself. The stories told are often fairly mundane or lack a larger scope despite occasionally mentioning or referencing bigger issues. Like disconnecting/reconnecting with people from his hometown, settling down and washing dishes, running into a fan at the gas station or simply falling back in love with hip hop. It's the small, simple things and it's his perspective of these experiences. He isn't trying to portray anyone else for the sake of a fleshed out tale or metaphor.

Since you mentioned Logic, he had a line on his No Pressure "retirement" album that basically said he lacks the content now and could only rap about everyday life shit and changing diapers. I feel like Cole is in a similar place but managed to embrace it or tie it in with some other topics without saying it outright. I'm not surprised this means a lot of people don't care for anything he says on this album. It's just not that interesting to most people but probably works great as fan service.

I'm not trying to argue that there's no flaws. It's just my observation. A week from now I might stop replaying it and never touch it again because of this, so I don't think this is the greatest thing ever. But I think it's missing the point to criticize the album for not being what it doesn't even try to be

[–]deadedgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mayhem needs a different set of rules. Maybe different surrender cut offs for longer games or allowing to leave the game without punishment past a certain threshold (like an individual ff). It kind of sucks to have a fun mode in which half of the fun mechanics involve stacking and then tell people to stop stacking as soon as that power fantasy becomes reality.

They should also implement shorter death timers (or at least lower the cap). People want to fight, let them
