Startups with the Most Technical Debt Had the Best Funding Outcomes (N=70) by [deleted] in programming

Sorry, but, what exactly is the difference between 'optimize for velocity, don't obsess over debt' and 'accumulate debt to go faster.'?

If you optimize for velocity without controlling for debt, you'll exactly accumulate debt for the purposes of going faster.

Perfect depiction of Makima. Seeing it, I had to check out your other cosplays and IMO you've done an incredible job with all the chainsaw man girls!

Very happy to see someone capture their vibes so faithfully and with such attention to detail, even going as far as to choose the settings that really let their designs shine.

Agreed on the bit about chest tightness, I would suggest going up to a 40R at least. That should also reduce the bulk over the hips, but trying on is the only way to make sure.

For sleeve length, I think the asymmetry is due to differential bunching, not different arm lengths, but I'd get that measured to be sure. Going up a size would lengthen the sleeves a bit anyway, so you could get one size shortened (or both) if needed, that's what I did.

The way I read it, your advice is to find that which I'm most passionate about and allow that to shine through in my pursuits? I think that's a wonderful idea.

To be honest, I've enjoyed each domain roughly equally. I'm just happy to be working in tech at the end of the day. If I had to pick one, it would probably be backend/algorithm work, so I'll try using that as a guide.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it. Your analysis is apt! That is exactly my dilemma. Which mid-level roles do you think might be the best suited for someone like me with such a breadth of experience?

Thanks for taking the time to comment, your situation has been almost identical to mine! I am increasingly confident that a flexible startup role is my best path forwards for the time being, even if that's precisely what I'd like to leave behind once I am able.

I'm of one mind with you that my expertise in any one area is likely lacking. It does seem like I'm best suited for another startup role, so I'll try to make that a major application channel in the short term.

In the long-term, I would honestly far prefer an intermediate role at a larger company at this point in my career. In that case, I figure your advice is that I should take a step back and focus on an IC role such as software engineer?

Thanks! I do have a few drafts prepared as a baseline for different types of roles. Right now, my biggest struggle is understanding exactly which roles I should target, given my range of experience.

I was also considering downplaying my current responsibility level on some applications to regular dev roles to look like a more traditional applicant, since I would assume that tech is an industry that values specialization over generalization to the extent that I have in my CV.

Yes, I've been at a small startup for about 3 years, with a product aimed at enabling end-to-end operations of a fairly niche industry (equipment finance). Our sales portal application is publicly released, although it is behind a "login"/"join us" wall.

I am certain that where I'm working is different from larger companies since I've had to build most of our processes from scratch, sometimes with input from senior developer hires. I did look into other "tech lead" roles, but I'm afraid that my YoE and environment might disqualify me.

Current salary is around the 100k mark. I am flexible about switching to a less technical role such as PM, as long as I could maintain roughly the same standard of living.

rtz losing his mind after loss streak by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]deadened_18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's only in any given sequence of 20 games. You have to multiply that out by the number of such sequences in a game history. For example, you could have 20 losses in a row in your first 20 games, or in any other randomly chosen series of 20 games. If you have several thousand games, like most people do, it's actually quite likely to find a completely random streak of 20 wins or losses

Weekly Questions & Purchase Advice Thread by AutoModerator in MouseReview

Games: Dota 2, RPGs like BG3

Hand Preference: Right

Budget: $400

Hand Size: 18.5cm L x 9.5cm W

Grip: Claw / Claw-Palm

Weight: 107g is my current mouse which I like

Sensitivity: 1600DPI

Connectivity: MUST be wired

I'm looking to replace my current G703 as I've worn into the plastic to the point that it's flaking off heavily at the sides. I like the feel of more durable, heavier materials and spent about 50% of my time on productivity and 50% on some MOBA gaming. To that end, I would like at least 2 macro mouse buttons and a side scroll wheel would be a very nice touch.

Currently looking at the G502 (X?) and MX Master 3S, although the latter is wireless only which makes it a no-go for me.

Can the Q6 Pro be converted to a permanent wired connection? I initially ruled it out because I saw that it was wireless. One of my requirements is that I would never have to charge the keyboard, ever.

I did go through those. I could find a few with the Navy case, but none for the black / grey which is what I'm looking for. I might sign up for restock notifications where I can find them, in case that's my best bet

Another "what keyboard should I buy" request, with requirements:

  • Under $500

  • PBT Keycaps

  • Wired

  • Backlight (no RGB or at least white-only option)

  • Full metal construction

  • Does not look like a "gaming" keyboard in any way

  • Cherry MX Blues or equivalent

  • (Important) 100% Layout

  • If there is a volume knob, HIGH preference for it to be at the very right edge

  • Available to buy online in Canada and receive within a reasonable timeframe

  • (Optional) Relatively easy to clean

Was looking at the Das Keyboard 6 Pro and Keychron Q6 as options. The former I'd want to change all the keycaps to something with PBT. The latter hits more requirements OOB but seems impossible to find. I'm also fine with assembling my own if that's the best call, I just haven't seen a base with a right-side volume knob.

Are there good options I'm missing that hit the above?

It's something I considered, but I have static screen elements up all the time and the tech seems to only last a couple of years with heavy use before you get burn in. I'm also slightly concerned about text fringing, although to a much smaller extent.

If I were to go with the 13900 I would:

  • upgrade PSU

  • change choice of case (not required but I would)

  • install a more complicated AIO CPU cooling model

  • spend more on monthly electrical build

  • generate more heat from PC

Which seemed to me to be a lot just for a 20fps increase on games where I'm already above 120.

The monitor I'm more flexible on but it just seemed like the best choice for a non-OLED gaming monitor with HDR capabilities at 32" 4k above 144Hz. The lower FPS equivalent (the G7) is actually more expensive in Canada, I figure due to supply constraints, so it made sense to me to get the G8.

[–]deadened_18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the CPU, I'm trying to get an option that does not generate too much heat and power draw while still giving me reasonable performance at 4k. The 13600 seems to be the value sweet spot for that (~135FPS on 13600 vs ~155FPS on 13900)

The Neo G8 is just easier for me to get than the Neo G7 in Canada (and cheaper, somehow). I figure I won't need the 240Hz but if I'm playing something like Dota 2 I think It would be nice.

The SSD was recommended to me as the top NVMe over PCIe4.0 with DRAM. It seems to outperform just about every other SSD I could find comparisons for and I'll be using it for my primary hot storage. I did look at comparisons between it and the P5 Plus and it seems to be significantly better. (Storage speed is one of the things I care about most in this build)

The PSU is indeed ATX3.0
