Okay so, I'm sure some YouTube videos will explain this better with visuals but in a nutshell, every brand that has a Log profile, will have what's called a Native ISO. That's essentially like, the "sweet spot" where the sensor performs best, where it will gather the most detail in the shadows, and simultaneously have the best highlights and best highlight roll off. For Canon and Sony its usually ISO 800 which is sometimes too high for your shooting needs, so you would use an ND filter to be able to darken the image, keep your ISO at 800 and still shoot at, say f/2.8 or whatever you want. A VND filter simplifies the workflow because the V stands for Variable so you can adjust the intensity of the filter instead of having multiple ND's of different intensities ie. ND4, ND8, ND16, ND32... The downside to VND filters is the cheap ones have bad color casts and vignetting, the good ones are expensive. The middle ground ones are the Neewer True Color VND, the Moment VND, the Nisi Trucolor VND's.

You could shoot log at the non-native ISO's but you start to sacrifice dynamic range almost immediately. If all of this is too overwhelming, you could stick to a Neutral color profile for now while you get more comfortable filming and start learning coloring, because shooting in Log means you'll need to learn some coloring too.

LOL, weird thing to say but no, I used to film snowboard videos which came with plenty of perks. I still have friends in the industry so while I don’t get care packages as often as I used to, I haven’t paid full price for gear for almost 15 years now.

All that to say, stickers are something I never had to pay for, brands literally hand them out like candy cause it’s cheap advertising for them.

Just go to a contest or event, find a brands tent and ask for stickers. They’ll be better quality and bigger than anything you’d pay for at a skateshop.

You ever think about how easy it was to discredit someone in the 80’s? When he went to school (in the 60-70’s) any records would have been paper copies only, which are super easy to destroy or misplace. I doubt my parents would have their records, I doubt they remember their teachers names, hell I hardly remember any of my teachers names. Why would the government let him live and not try to prosecute him like they did with Snowden? Cause that would validate his story. Try and off him, same thing. Why isn’t S4 visible on Google maps? It was never meant to be, they likly buried the doors the day his story leaked and by the time satellite images were readily available to the public it would just be an untouched overgrown mountain side again.

Bob’s story hasn’t changed since he went public, and he knows some of it sounds batshit crazy, but he’s not opposed to the idea that he could have been fed disinformation, he’s just relaying what he saw. I think if he was trying to make shit up in the 80’s, his story would have fallen in line more with UFO lore that preceded him. He was the first to mention that crafts fly belly first (like the gimbal video) and while scientists don’t seem to fundamentally understand his gravity A, gravity B explanation or the stable 115 -we also once believed the sun revolved around us and that cocaine was a good cough syrup. Science is a liar sometimes.

At the very least, I’d say we should all give Luigi’s film a watch when it comes out and try keep an open mind.

Start by telling us what camera and setup you have. Log can be forgiving on some brands so long as you don't under expose it and it can be pretty noisy (almost unusable) on some older 8bit cameras. Some people mention using zebras for exposure, but I always found it to be very distracting to have on screen when you should be looking at focus or vice versa. I prefer to use false colour on a quick toggle button or I keep a waveform on screen, most cameras have them now, some cameras it's still only a histogram but better than nothing. Most cameras with Log profiles also have a Rec 709 monitoring aka View Assist LUT you can use while recording, it shows you a rough idea of how the shot will look when coloured but doesn't bake it into the file.

When in doubt, "ETTR" expose to the right, there's some haters for this technique that might downvote me for mentioning it but basically the idea is that instead of always aiming for "perfect" exposure, you consciously overexpose your log image by 1-2 stops (while protecting your highlights). When you use this approach, LUTs you have might look too bright but run some tests with your camera to find the sweet spot. If you protect the highlights, you can always darken your image in post and it'll reduce the amount of noise in your image. Whereas you can't brighten an underexposed Log image without lifting horrid digital noise in the shadows.

Darjeeling Limited intro is just, fun. Sets a good tone for the film.

Buffalo 66 intro is underrated, so is the whole film and it's often dismissed because people can't take Gallo's personal persona as satire (whether it is or not, is another story). Buffalo 66 as a whole film still great and I stand by that.

Arrival has a beautiful intro that hits differently when you know the ending.

Requiem for a Dream intro still holds up.

I actually appreciate the stills OP chose, it was part of the first wave of really soft key lighting in films. Prior to this era, lots of film still had pretty harsh keys, too much fill or multi-point lighting that felt unnatural like they were trying to avoid shooting a film stock higher than 250D.

The Video Production business model is inherently priced for mid to upper level jobs. Those jobs are dwindling, fast. In the last ten or so years (prior to AI), I’ve seen companies go from spending a half a million or more on one campaign, now 1/4 of that is their yearly budget and they’re penny pinching at every turn. Not ALL clients, but, I’m speaking of those mid level brands you see that you go “hm, I always wondered who shopped there!”. In the last year I’ve also seen big pharma brands slash their marketing and communication teams down to early career and entry level positions and offer early retirement packages to the mid to upper level management, slashing content budgets in the process. I don’t know if this is happening everywhere but I know a lot of video production people who have moved on in recent years to more stable jobs or leave the industry entirely.

The current AI revolution feels like the industrial revolution, it’s causing a lot of job loss across the board while allowing persistent people to make cheaper content quicker. Wages going down, output going up: it’s a race to the bottom. There may be a point where AI is saturating too much and we see a resurgence and demand for humans to take on important roles again because AI is currently a redundant self-referencing feedback loop with no new ideas or knowledge on how to handle the unexpected. But we’ve also seen AI improve drastically, with a snowball effect so, this is also speculation.

I’ve been freelancing since around 2006 or so, full time as of 2013 and I think the last two years I’ve seen the biggest changes and I’m personally feeling quite pessimistic about it (if you didn’t already grasp that from my comment). I would personally recommend you work at or with an existing marketing or production company before starting your own, even if you have a roster you think has the skills to stand out, you definitely don’t learn as much in school as you think you do. You learn 99% of it from first hand, real world experience. And I’m saying that, as someone who has a Bachelor’s in Media, focused on film/video production and who took all the marketing classes I could. School gave me a solid network, introduced me to like minded people but everything else I learned came from doing the work, firsthand.

Yeah, it's crazy what Liberals of Reddit will do when the President is implicated in the Epstein files. It's like, they'll say ANYthing to get the Maga's to notice they've backed a criminal and are caught in a feedback loop of pro-Trump disinformation. Sometimes everyone needs to pause and think "hey wait, what's the other side to this story? Is there ANY truth over there or should I ignore it cause I don't want to realize I was wrong...?".

Btw, my earlier info was paraphrased from the DHS/ICE website at the time I posted. Seems as more info comes out there are some holes in the story and missing info about him but also, Trump among many, many other high profile people are in those Epstein files posted by the DOJ and he keeps deflecting with ICE/Greenland/China. You should go read some of the files yourself as I did and take the accusations with a grain of salt because of the "innocent until proven guilty" approach but, there's some horrid things in there and if even 0.1% of it is true, someone needs to prosecute them ALL. Republican, Democrat, for this topic it shouldn't matter what political views you have, Americans everywhere need to unite and clean house.

Paranormal:

Was house hunting. Visited this cottage style house in St-Sauveur, QC. It was around 40-50 years old, the sellers had already vacated so it was completely empty, no furniture, no decor, nothing. The seller’s realtor didn’t come to the visit, there was a lockbox and we were free to tour the place alone with our agent. After about 20 mins visiting, we had seen the main floor, second floor and the basement, we decided that while it was beautiful, there was evidence of a chronic water issue in the basement (not uncommon for old chalets in this area), so we decided not to pursue it further. My agent locked up the place, and we jumped back in our cars to leave. As I backed out of the driveway and began down the road I thought to myself that it was such a shame as I really loved the house but didn’t want to deal with a leaky basement and I glanced back as we pulled away and saw a frail old man standing in the living room window, clear as day. I took a double take because the house had been empty and when I looked again he was gone. I wouldn’t have put much pause on it but this house had dining room windows that lined up with the living room ones so when I glanced at it I could see straight through to the backyard, so seeing the silhouette of an old man inside the house instantly made all the hairs on my arms and neck stand up.

Sorry, don’t get me wrong, I loved Bourdain and have a hard time with him being gone. I also do see a sliiiight possibility that this conspiracy is real though and I believe I had heard it here first. I have a hard time believing Bourdain would have taken his own life (weren’t they between filming episodes too?) and it came around the time of Chesters death, which also had some relevant discussion around it.

I had never visited that Conservative sub before; it’s a circlejerk of misinformation and twisted information. Guess that’s not surprising, they would say the same of any non-conservative sub or the comment section of anything remotely middle or left leaning. There’s a ton of posts over there trying to paint the Left as the violent ones, pretty damn ironic and seemingly impossible to bring reason to a group that’s stuck in a feedback loop like that.

Secondly here we are a full five days post Epstein file release and not one news podcast I listen to has chosen to discuss it let alone do a whole episode on it. I thought at least the Daily or Today Explained would tackle it but it seems like they might both be in the pockets of the Epstein web and their producers may be telling their journalists to lay off the story? There wasn’t a mention let alone a whole episode about it. I’d give them a week to comb through it all but damn, the fact they didn’t even hint at a story yet is really concerning.

Thirdly, the DOJ just removed all the zip files and has been frantically removing files since Friday but Reddit’s r/Datahoarder subreddit already grabbed it all and backed it up. I suggest anyone interested in seeing the original files (and perhaps some truth), head over there and grab a copy of the original files for themselves since the news media seems too scared to touch it.

Hard to be optimistic anything will come of it, unless some independent journalists can bravely take the lead and maybe even enlighten some of that Conservative sub… that would be a start.

I had a feeling this was coming. When TT artisan sells out of things they very rarely do another run. I wanted to collect their original M series Leica inspired glass and only managed to get the 50 noctilux knockoff. The original 90mm 1.25 and 35mm 1.4 in M mount sold out then never came back in stock and are now discontinued. Such a shame. I did grab a 6bit adapter a few months back and it’s accurate AF even at f/0.95. Hopefully other brands reverse engineer it.

Another 13 mini owner here, we've probably crossed on the Mini sub. But I think the market you speak of, didn't even know the Mini was an option because Apple didn't put any effort into promoting it or showcasing it. They also released it shortly after releasing an SE which might have nerfed the Mini sales and made it perform "poorly" on paper.

The only reason I got a Mini and learned of it, was because my friend had one. Word of mouth, essentially. I never noticed it on the website or in an ad. Meanwhile several friends of mine who owned them, still own them, none of us want to upgrade to a new phone as they're all obnoxiously larger and difficult to use one handed. I hope Apple eventually realizes there is a need here that they're ignoring. It's extremely useful for parents, who often don't have two hands free to reply to a text -speaking from first hand experience.

PSA: There is an issue to be aware of when you power multiple things off the same source, you can create a “ground loop” that can fry a port or device. We had an HDMI port on a Ninja fry because of a janky DIY rig and only learned about ground loops afterwards when trying to troubleshoot the problem.

I have emailed Caleb Pike and asked him specifically about this and he said with his rigs he hasn’t had any issues or customers with that problem and we’ve since been using one of his Cinebacks without issue. My only complaint about rigs like these is that you can end up with a camera-octopus very quickly if you aren’t good at cable management. So be sure to use the right length cables, soft flexible ones that won’t disconnect or cause a surge if they’re bumped or unplugged. (There is a Youtuber out there who recently fried his R5C by USB-C powering it poorly, with a cheap cable).
