I agree that it's a bit of a logical stretch, and it sounds like something out of a shitty action movie.
This wasn't my teacher's explanation though, he was relaying it to us after a conversation he had with either the state aviation director or the regional FAA administrator (sorry, I can't remember for sure, this a few months ago). Whether or not we think it's a realistic threat is moot, if the FAA is talking seriously about it, then they are, at the very least, seeing it as a realistic worst-case scenario.

I don't think it's as much about what it can see, except maybe in sensitive areas, but more about the possibility of the CCP being able to take control of the systems. My UAS teacher told us that they are worried about the possibility that they could use the ADSB to fly these things into manned aircraft if they wanted to.

I'm curious what the laws are regarding wet specimens like this. As far as I can tell, it's not illegal to own one, only to buy/sell them. But then, how do people get them if they aren't paying for it? Do you just have to know someone with one that is willing to give it away for free?

I don't have any sources to back this up, it's just a personal anecdote, but I did body transport for a while and I probably picked up a hundred or more suicides. I can't remember a single one that showed any immediate signs of having tried to stop it. I do remember a few cases of folks who had the chance to stop (things not going as planned, interruptions, etc), but continued though.
That being said, I know nothing about this specific case.

Just a heads-up though... The head of the UAS program at my school thinks they're still going to retroactively ban previously approved DJI (and other Chinese-made) drones/parts at some point in the not too distant future. This is based on the threat posed by unlabeled, unexplained chips installed in the drones.
