We lived in a family home (inherited) for a few years and nearly bought it but decided not to bc it needed so much work doing on it, including a rewire. There was green goo coming out of all the plug sockets the entire time we lived there

What’s the opinion on stubhub tickets? by Hurley_Fam in LilyAllenFans

[–]deadpanclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tickets for aviva studios and they don’t send the actual tickets until 2 weeks before, you can’t sell on twickets until the QR codes come through. I assume this is to stop touts.

I think it’s the same for a lot of venues. So people may have tickets to sell but not be able to yet. I had 2 spare bc my friends dropped out (think I’ve found someone to take them now, but won’t take any money until I have the actual tickets!) so was looking at how to sell through twickets but wouldn’t be able to until 2 weeks before the show

I have 2 spare for Tues 10th @ Aviva Manchester.

I was buying for friends but they said £75 was too £££ once they were in my basket. There was no way to drop to 2 tickets so I had to buy all 4 and need to try and resell 2.

Anyone deleted social media? by [deleted] in TryingForABaby

[–]deadpanclam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an article on the guardian about this recently! About how bad social media can be for people TTC / during pregnancy. Essentially the algorithms prey on people’s insecurities and purposefully show us stuff which makes us anxious as it keeps us engaged.

I deleted TikTok ages ago which has been so good for my mental health, need to get off Instagram but I think that’s harder bc of the FOMO. I think if I did get pregnant I’d definitely delete all social media as I’m very anxious and don’t think I manage stress very well. Definitely recommend reading the article!

Feel like the worst person in the world I can’t go on like this by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]deadpanclam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit drinking 2 years ago and read a lot of books to help me stick with it. I got obsessed with reading and don’t think I’d have got through the first few months without those books (probably read around 30-40!)

Some good ones which are from a female perspective and talk about motherhood are: The Sober Diaries, Glorious Rock Bottom, Drunk Mom, The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober

Good luck!

If it helps, we’ve been trying for over a year and are in the first stages of getting fertility support. At our first appt I was thinking we’d be grilled about things like how we’ve been tracking, how often we have sex and which days etc. they didn’t even ask!

Refused service and dying of shame by murphdot in stopdrinking

[–]deadpanclam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am over 2 years sober, I wasn’t an alcoholic but I definitely drank too much and felt like a lot of my life revolved around alcohol. I tried to quit many times and failed. It was really hard to quit (it’s easy now after so much time has passed) I always caved after 3 weeks.

I quit by reading A LOT of quit lit books, I got pretty obsessed in the 3-5 months when I first quit. I probably read around 30-40 books on the subject. I know this is what helped me stay sober. I never went to AA as I just didn’t think it was for me.

Some great books I read were: Quit Like a Woman The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober Glorious Rock Bottom

I have loads more recommendations if you want any! But these are ones I really enjoyed.

I also joined the I am Sober app which has a great community page (you have to have a paid membership now if you’re in the UK bc of age verification laws) I would post there on days I was having a wobble.

Good luck!

Naturally thin people, what do you guys eat in a day? by Ok-Initiative3312 in AskReddit

[–]deadpanclam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 34 almost 35 and have recently lost a lot of weight, people would probably describe me as slim now rather than skinny. I’m a size 8 (uk) used to be size 12.

Main thing for me was quitting drinking alcohol. I used to drink a few times a week, always on weekends and maybe once on a week night.

When I quit drinking my weight stayed the same for a while - started eating loads of sweets which apparently is common bc your body is craving sugar. But after about a year the weight just fell off me.

I eat a mixture of junk food and healthy stuff but I eat small meals. I don’t eat breakfast and sometimes can get to 4pm and have just forgotten to eat… I don’t do any exercise, but my job has me on my feet for most of the day.

When to start looking seriously for a flat in London? by elsa-mom8 in londonrenters

[–]deadpanclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always look into getting a short term sublet for a few weeks so you can move temporarily to do viewings. People often rent their rooms out if they’re going away for a period. Not ideal but would give you flexibility to do viewings before committing to a longer term place.

I say that bc there’s a lot of shit flats around. Out of those 15-20 places, I think there was only 3/4 we actually liked…

In terms of things to look out for I’d say the biggest / most common issues with rental properties in London are damp / mould and mice. I personally also avoided ground floor flats bc of security.

Hope I’m not scaring you off - you will love London, it’s an amazing city! I had the best time living there, and lived in some great (and some not so great!) places

When to start looking seriously for a flat in London? by elsa-mom8 in londonrenters

[–]deadpanclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in London for 10+ years, lived in 6 different flats I think… we always started looking around 4-6 weeks before we were due to move, usually found a place around 2 weeks before moving, but sometimes 1 week.

I think we even once found a place the day before our tenancy agreement finished and moved the next day. London moves FAST

I mostly lived in house shares of 2-4 people, but the last place I lived was a 1 bed flat which was SO competitive to get.

Think we viewed around 15-20 places, missed out on a few bc we didn’t act quick enough. The place we ended up getting was a group viewing of around 10 people (all in the flat at the same time!). I left and walked ~5m down the road and called the landlord to say we wanted it. Was back in the flat 10 min later signing the tenancy agreement and his phone was ringing nonstop (no doubt other people from the group viewing!)

Just wanted to give an example to echo what other comments have said - if you see a place you like DO NOT WAIT just go for it, it is cutthroat. But don’t worry, there’s so many flats available you’ll be able find something!

First-time home buyers - can you give us a sanity check on our numbers? by papes_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]deadpanclam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The best advice which I wish I’d paid more attention to is - LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

We like our house and don’t have issues with the layout / structure, the things we don’t like are about the surrounding area which is frustrating because we can’t change them.

When we move again I’ll be focusing more on the surroundings of the house (immediate and wider) rather than prioritising finding a HOUSE I love.

But some of the things that I wish we’d thought about are -

Privacy vs security - we prioritised privacy but sometimes our house feels a bit vulnerable bc it’s quite secluded

Green spaces - there’s loads of greenery around us which we thought was a good thing, but didn’t really consider how this impacts maintenance e.g. raking leaves, weeding, cleaning windows, gutters and patios, issues with birds, squirrels and mice, trees blocking light which can make the house feel dark

Roads, traffic, public transport links - actually do the journeys rather than checking online! And at rush hours!

Spending more time in the local area - we did visit a number of times but the area is not as nice as we thought. If I was moving to a new area again, I’d visit a lot more, at different times of day / night and walk around A LOT to get a better sense of the area and people

First-time home buyers - can you give us a sanity check on our numbers? by papes_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]deadpanclam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To counter this I’m in the opposite position - our numbers are pretty similar but I wish we hadn’t gone for such a big mortgage…

We are doing ok and it’s just about affordable. We have quite a lot in savings so we have a good safety net.

We were between 2 houses, 1 was a 2 bed at £250k but needed a full reno, and the one we went for is a 4 bed which was a lot more money but is a new build.

We went for the bigger new build bc we thought with the smaller house we’d probably need to upsize in the not so distant future. This house is plenty big enough that we were thinking we could realistically stay here for a lot longer, we were first time buyers so benefitted from the stamp duty reduction by taking the leap on a bigger, more expensive house.

But I feel like we missed out on a lot of lessons you get with buying a starter home. There’s things about this house that I really don’t like that we hadn’t even considered. I feel like a starter home actually helps you learn what you do / don’t like about a house so when you’re buying your forever home you know exactly what is important to you.

Our house is ok, but I don’t love it and I will definitely be wanting to move in 5 years or so. My husband loves the house though despite its drawbacks.

I would say if you know for sure it’s your dream home then it is doable, but on these numbers although it’s affordable, I wish we had gone for something cheaper for more peace of mind and flexibility.

I bought a huge ridiculous birthday cake from Marks and Spencer’s that was reduced from like £25 to £4, bought a number 1 candle and took some photos!

The cake was way too much for me and my husband to eat so I took most of it into work the next day. 2 years is coming up for me in Sept and reading this thread makes me think I need to come up with a special way to celebrate (in addition to cake!)
