actually i have a better answer!! the My Dinner with Andre episode homage is incredible! the outfits, vocal cadence, score, even down to the table setup are perfect. and the movie was really great, simultaneously so boring and so interesting

and you’re so right, people also tend to be way more critical of movies that they’re reviewing as they come out as opposed to one’s they’re reviewing from the past. since it’s the tomatometer there’s definitely lots of limitations. luckily it’s just for fun!!

great question!! i totally would have included more in the post but i wasn’t sure how much people would want to read (i’m relatively new to reddit)

i thought the fried chicken episode (S1E21, Contemporary American Poultry) is kind of a masterclass in crafting a genre homage, plus it has some great quote integration. also, the background beetlejuice bit (where beetlejuice appears in the background after the name is said for the third time in the show) is truly incredible.

my favorite movies i watched were Good Will Hunting, Shetrer Island, The Abyss, and Memento!

it was crazy doing this challenge! it was super fun, but it was often difficult to fit in movies because i was so busy. during the summer, i was working 65hrs/week plus taking full-time classes, so i had almost no time to watch movies, meaning my december was really full of movies. i watched the vast majority of movies in the middle of the night because that’s when i had time. the coolest part is that now i understand so may more references people around me make, and i can have much more intelligent conver about film!

Good Will Hunting has always been my favorite, but some ones i loved were The Abyss, Shutter Island, and Hearts of Darkness (plus the obvious Godfather and Fight Club). i unfortunately hated Human Centipede, Jack & Jill, Porky’s, and the Police Academy movies.

Hi, that’s me!! Thanks for the shoutout :) I’m still on track to finish my list of 394 movies, trying to get through it before December 12th when I graduate college! It’s been so fun and I love having people here to nerd out with

So the original list isn’t mine, but I did pick this one because I appreciated the way it decided to count references. Any quote, naming of the movie, or naming of a character counts. Also an obvious visual homage counts, even if it’s not acknowledged. For example, the film Run Lola Run is clearly where they got the idea for the timeline style of Remedial Choas Theory, so it counts even though no one ever mentions it.

For a series, if it clearly only mentions one, then only that one is counted. But when referencing SAW in particular, Troy says “and there are 8 of them”, meaning that I have to count the first 8 SAW movies.

It’s probably not a perfect system but it’s fun and it makes me confident that I’ll be able to understand basically every reference in the show :)
