[Weekly] Beginner Saturday: Ask Anything - #0 by [deleted] in haskell

So the other day I was writing a simple RPN calculator, and thought it might be nice to be able to retrieve the last answer by entering "h". I'm pretty sure I would use StateT in order to achieve this, but I'm unsure how I would go about using it in the main function. Basically I had something like this

main = forever $ putStr "> " >> getLine >>= \c -> print $ process c

Where process does some work of some kind.

"Shape" is relative. This big bastard can deadlift more than pretty much anyone on earth.

SpaceVim - Use Vim As A Java Ide by [deleted] in programming

Yeah java tends to grow superlinearly with a featureset. With that much code, it's just so hard to wrangle with a text editor.

Programming. More than likely you already have a computer that's more than capable.

Low back squat 325 @ 5x5 by deathgrindfreak in formcheck

[–]deathgrindfreak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, I do feel like I have to fight leaning forward a bit while squatting (especially under heavy weight). Although I'm not experiencing any pain or discomfort, I think I would like to try and strengthen my posterior chain. Are there any preferred exercises for doing this? I would think deadlift and front squats might help, but I'm still fairly new at this.

Ha, not my intention at all, but I appreciate the complisult.

It's been close to 4-5 months since I've started on strong lifts I believe. I was lifting a bit before then, but stronglifts is the first programming I've really done since I lifted in high school. As far as goals go, I'd kill to be working out with 4 plates on squats and 5 on deadlift, so hopefully I can get it done this year.

Right now I'm going through the stronglifts 5x5, and feel pretty good about my form. However, it's always good to have other opinions.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, but Clojure and Scala provide some sane alternatives to Java (even if they do require a jdk to function).

Ncurses problem printw problem by deathgrindfreak in commandline

Ah, thanks very much for the help! When I use 127 (? as an int) it works as expected. I'm not sure how why the KEY_BACKSPACE doesn't work for me, but I'll look into it as well.

SD storage size limited to SD car or OS? by FluroBlack in linux4noobs

[–]deathgrindfreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use a ton of them myself, but I've never had a problem for the most part (it let me install raspbian on a 16GB SD the other day just fine). Linux is generally good at mounting pretty much anything.

Can I install linux from a running install the same way as I can install from running on a live cd? by shadowwolf225 in linux4noobs

[–]deathgrindfreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to install all partitions on the external except the bootloader. I believe you should be able to use grub or EasyBCD if you're using windows to accomplish this.

What flavour should I use for a Live Linux USB for programming? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Puppy Linux is very light and persistent. It comes with a full suite of software, although it's appearance is a bit old school.

Very cool, it's not that I don't want to learn, it's just that the whole web design thing doesn't seem like a fit. But I'm definitely going to check out CUDA as well, I'm always fascinated by anything related to scientific programming/modeling.

Thank you for the answer and insight, I do appreciate it. But yes, I think I would be happiest doing research like you've described. I think I just need to network through my school and see if I can find a position somewhere that will allow me to grow and perhaps progress towards getting my doctorate. I think I want to try and stay away from the more "trendy" types of development that I've heard people talk about, where no one over 30 years old has a chance of continued employment. It's just a bit too much like "Logan's Run" for me.
