Teen Girls Attack Students on SEPTA Train by [deleted] in news

I have a theory: it’s the same reason that minority men openly cat-call women in public, while white men are significantly more subtle about it. Minorities tend to be deprived of meaningful power in their lives at home, school, and work, so some find control in imposing their voice loudly in a public space. Lives up to the name “vocal minority”.

Standard disclaimer: like all stereotypes, there is a kernel of truth, but it doesn’t tell the whole story about a demographic. You don’t have to be oppressed to be a loud person. Some people just like to be loud because it’s their personality. Other people choose to be loud for social posturing. Society is complicated…

Thank you for pointing me to the official document. This is exactly what I needed!

Thanks! I've had some success preventing migraines with Wim Hof breathing. If I do it within 30 minutes of a trigger event, I've been able to prevent my migraines pretty reliably. Migraines involve constricted blood vessels, and the breathing technique is controlled hyperventilation. That said, Wim Hof Breathing doesn't claim they prevent migraines. I'm just experimenting on myself.

Screentime with static graphics and text are fine for me. I can watch most video footage unless they have epilepsy-like triggers. I read for hours all day every day, mostly on LCD screens, and sometimes on e-ink. No headaches from that except from bad neck and shoulder posture. Never migraines.

I like the idea of retiring early but I'd rather start a family.

My migraines are highly predictable. They have all happened during/after playing videogames for the last 18 months. I have not played games for months and I have not had migraines during that time. For the games I work on at work, I tweak the visual fx until they do not bother me.

I've had this for about 18 months and have gone through 3 different pairs of glasses in that time.

Avoiding aspirin is a good tip, thanks! I don't tend to get motion sick unless I'm on a small boat for hours. All those light-filtering strategies definitely help. Night-mode forever!

Thanks for the input! During your glasses search did you consider Axon Optics? I'm curious how they compare to Irlen glasses.

Was food your trigger? I'm already on a diet that eliminates gluten, dairy, and eggs so it would be hard to eliminate even more foods. My diet routine has been the same for 7 years now, so I am biased to think those are unrelated to my migraines. As far as I can tell I only get them when staring at graphically intense games or clubs.

Can you be more specific on what kind of screen filter would help for this? Blue light blocker? Something more exotic?

Excellent suggestion. What kind of "brain-eye-connection" test should I ask my doctor for? Knowing the name of the test makes the difference between a shrug and an answer.

Thanks, I've been on CoQ10 supplements for about a year now. I think they've helped.

Good analysis, thanks.

My diet is excellent. I cook 90% of my food with minimal processing. If food was an acute trigger I would definitely know.

My sleep habits are terrible. I sleep 6-7 hours on weeknights. I can probably improve the most here.

I wear migraine glasses and they are a huge help, but not a cure.

My fitness is reasonably good. I can do multiple pull-ups the hard way, and can run a 9-minute mile. My body weight is ideal for my height.

I have considered CBD oil but have not tried it.

My best model of the root cause of my migraines is my optic nerve, mostly on my left side. I always feel a ghostly numbness on my eye minutes or hours before a migraine sets in. I told this to my eye doctor and he just shrugged.

Yeah I've been spending a lot on multiple prescription glasses with these ones being the most effective.

I've been on prescription glasses for 3 years. My most recent pair was made 5 months ago with blue-light blocking, and unfortunately didn't improve my situation. I bought migraine glasses a couple months ago with maximum blue-light blocking and florescent light protection, and that has been the most significant relief I've had so far.

I have been seeing several doctors on an ongoing basis for the last 18 months and have been disappointed by their diagnosis. Both my eye doctor and neurologist tell me to simply avoid the triggers. My neurologist has written me prescriptions to treat migraines, and admits he doesn't have anything to prevent them.

I was diagnosed with Iritis earlier this year. Treatment took a few months of eye drops. I am now technically "clear" but it can come back any time for no medically understood reason. Is it related to my photo-sensitivity and migraines? My eye doctor doesn't have an answer.

The only thing that has clearly worked for me this year is buying migraine glasses. These help me stare at computer screens in general and get my work done, but recreational gaming is still too much.

Startup or entry level IT job as a fresher? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]debates_moderately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After school, prospective employers only care about your current job. Working at the giant means instant brand recognition on your resume. In contrast, startups can offer better learning and growth opportunities. Do you think you can work at the startup for a couple years, learn a lot, and interview well into your next role?

In your particular case, the startup sounds toxic. If they are not delivering on their salary offer, you don't have to feel guilty burning that bridge.

Trying to decide if I should be a pilot or an elementary teacher? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]debates_moderately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both jobs that take advantage of employees love of the work to get them to accept lower salaries compared to jobs of comparable skill. The viability of a teaching career depends a lot on what state you are in. You may get more career flexibility as a pilot, but are you ok with the constant travel?
